- Artificial intelligence : understanding the determinants of adoption and intention to recommend the technology in travel and transportationPublication . Pereira, António Maria Grave Gomes Garrido; Baptista, Gonçalo da Costa Aleixo Monteiro MelhoradoThe travel and transportation industry, like any other sector, must stay up to date with advancements in technology. Disruptive technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), are being used to develop business, create new opportunities, increase productivity and efficiency, and to meet urgent needs. Notwithstanding the possible advantages that this technology may bring, there is still little research on AI use in the travel and transportation industry. Artificial intelligence is one of the most significant technical advancements of the twenty first century. Its impact on society extends beyond employment and education to healthcare and transportation. AI has the potential to enhance economic growth, revolutionise existing industries, and create new ones. This research attempts to contribute to this understudied field, filling a gap in literature, by putting out a novel, thorough, and as far as we know until now not yet tested theoretical model, designed with the combination of the outcome of a literature meta-analysis with travel experience, and intention to recommend the technology important constructs. A quantitative investigation conducted across multiple countries employed structural equation modelling (SEM) to test the suggested model empirically. The findings imply that user attitude is strongly influenced by performance expectancy, that the intention to use AI is significantly influenced by initial trust and attitude.
As principais implicações destes resultados serão discutidas.
- Breaking prescriptive stereotypes or facing backlash? : ageism and the impact of technology use by older workers in the modern workplacePublication . Hörmann, Katharina Christina; Camilo, Cristina Maria LopesAge-related prescriptive stereotypes in the workplace often shape expectations about older workers’ abilities, particularly concerning technology. When individuals violate these stereotypes, they may face negative social and economic consequences for deviating from societal norms, also referred to as backlash (Rudman, 1988). This dissertation explored how older workers who violate technology-based age stereotypes are perceived by people of different ages. Factors influencing these perceptions, and the role of benevolent and hostile ageism in this relationship were examined. Through a factorial vignette experiment (n = 169), participants evaluated profiles depicting either middle-aged or older workers, female or male workers, and workers who adhere to or violate technology-based age stereotypes. The findings revealed that older workers perceived as less technologically adept (thus adhering to stereotypes) were rated higher in warmth and likability, whereas middle-aged workers showed the opposite trend. Both groups, however, were perceived as more competent and respected when they behaved counter-stereotypically by demonstrating technological proficiency. Contrary to expectations, hostile ageism, participant age, and the gender of the evaluated individual did not significantly influence perceptions but were instead linked to different emotional responses such as irritation and annoyance. This study partially supports existing literature while offering new insights into the relationship between age stereotype violations and perceptions of older workers. It also underscores the need for further research on the factors shaping perceptions of counter-stereotypical behavior in older individuals. Practical recommendations are provided to help mitigate the potential negative consequences for older workers displaying high levels of technological competence and adaptability in the workplace.
- Common volatility shocks of ESG marketsPublication . Ánh, Dang Thi Ngoc; Martins, SusanaThis dissertation explores the interconnectedness and common volatility shocks in international ESG markets. Utilizing the MSCI ESG Leader Indices across eight regions, the study investigates whether idiosyncratic volatilities are correlated and identifies events triggering simultaneous movements. By employing the common volatility model proposed by Engle & Campos-Martins (2023), the research measures shared volatility shocks and their drivers, particularly focusing on climate policy uncertainty and transition and physical risks. The results show significant correlations between regional volatilities and identify key events that have caused the highest levels of volatility co-movement. The model also has portfolio implications, as regions have different exposures to the common factor. The most sensitive to volatility shocks are ESG market leaders such as Europe and the US, so emerging ESG markets such as Australia and Korea may be more attractive to risk-averse investors during periods of high ESG common volatility. Additionally, regression analysis shows that climate risks significantly influence these volatility shocks after controlling for global equity market shocks, highlighting the heightened sensitivity of ESG markets to climate dynamics after the Paris Agreement. Uncertainty surrounding climate policy and concerns about climate-related physical risks amplify shared volatility shocks in responsible markets. In contrast, shocks to climate transition risk exhibit a negative relationship with the factor, suggesting reduced exposure within the context of transitioning to a low-carbon economy. These findings provide novel insights for investors and policymakers, highlighting the importance of a stable regulatory environment and the role of ESG assets in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
- Communication strategies of formula one on Instagram : a case study of Ferrari and Mclaren in media lifePublication . Caissée, Elisa; Fonseca, Isadora de AtaídeThis study aims to analyse, observe, and provide an overview of the Formula One social media landscape and the strategies used to reach the audience. The investigation emphasises the following research problem: What methods are employed by Formula One teams to leverage their social media presence on Instagram to foster audience engagement? The methodological choice is a qualitative study involving a content analysis and a case study construction of two Formula One teams: McLaren and Ferrari. The conclusion is that both analysed tiles leverage the Instagram platform to reinforce their existing connections with their audiences, creating and reaching a new audience segment. This is done through various strategies, from humanising the sport, the athletes practising it, and the teams to real-time updates that make the follower a well-integrated part of the sport. Both teams communicate in alignment with their brand values and use different leverages to achieve that.
- O compliance no combate à corrupção no setor público e no setor privadoPublication .
- Compromise and contradiction, striving in a system one condemns? : a case study of the radical leftist bookshop Piena Libreria in LisbonPublication . Degiorgi, Giulia; Lino, Verena Pia Sonia Monika LindemannThis dissertation dives into the world of radical leftist bookshops, taking Piena Libreria, one such businesses, as a case study. The aim is to explore the contradictions that arise from being a politically involved anti-capitalist business under a capitalist framework. Piena Librearia is an Italian bookshop, founded by Sara Cappai and Elisa Sartor in 2022, with a curated catalogue of feminist, LGBTQI+, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist books, located in the neighbourhood of Arroios, in Lisbon, Portugal. This study implements ethnographic research, combining semistructured interviews and personal observation and analysis, in order to explore how Piena Libreria can survive, and even thrive, while operating under a system it condemns. What are the compromises the bookshop has to make and what contradictions does it fall prey to? My research draws from Kimberley Kinder’s theories in The Radical Bookstore: Counterspace for Social Movements (2021), expanding upon her spatial analysis through a political lens rooted in various works by feminist, Marxist, and anti-capitalist theorists and philosophers. These works were chosen specifically in accord with Piena’s ideology, therefore analyzing the bookshop within its own perceived framework. The research aims at filling a gap in the field by providing a non-Anglo-American perspective on radical bookstores, specifically giving insights to the Portuguese and Italian context. Each of the four analytical chapters of the dissertation address one key contradiction faced by Piena Libreria: worker’s alienation within capitalist business structures, the resemblance between domestic labor and underpaid passion projects work, the bookstore’s symbiotic relationship with its community and its potential role in gentrification processes. Each chapter highlights strategies for navigating these challenges while remaining true to the shop’s radical views. The concluding section summarizes these insights, offering recommendations for Piena and similar commercial activities, therefore contributing to the broader discourse on the cultural and political significance of radical independent businesses in contemporary society.
