- European integration through open-ended mechanismsPublication . Torres, FranciscoThe book analyses the building of the European Union’s governance framework from the point of view of the sustainability of the European integration process. It departs from the premise that the evolution of that framework hinges on some degree of preference convergence to have occurred or to occur. It addresses two fundamental EU institutions that were built as open-ended mechanisms: Economic and Monetary Union and the European Green Deal. In doing so, it also discusses the importance of ‘openness’ to further political integration and the limits of differentiated integration.

- Media synchronicity effects on telecommuters’ working experiencePublication . Kilson, Gabriel Almeida; Tavares, PatríciaThe widespread adoption of work from home has ignited a critical debate surrounding the necessity of in-office attendance and its influence on organizational performance. A central concern is that reduced face-to-face interaction might impede internal communication and overall effectiveness. Drawing on Media Synchronicity Theory, this chapter explores how employees experience media synchronicity in relation to shared understanding, contribution visibility, and performance evaluation. To investigate these experiences, we adopted a phenomenological approach, conducting online interviews with full-time telecommuters across various professional settings. Our findings challenge the conventional view, demonstrating that telecommuting does not inherently hinder complex discussions. Instead, telecommuters strategically select media options based on the communication context, enabling them to achieve high-quality communication. We further highlight the limitations of relying solely on quantitative metrics for assessing performance in highly interactive, non-repetitive roles, advocating for regular, synchronous communication between employees and managers. This chapter concludes with practical, managerial implications for optimizing internal communication and informing telecommuting policies.
- Yearbook: mestrado da Faculdade de Direito - Escola do Porto / Universidade Católica Portuguesa vol. 7 (2024)Publication . Carvalho, Raquel; Botelho, Catarina SantosA Escola do Porto da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Católica Portuguesa atribui, anualmente, a dezenas de estudantes, o grau de mestre em Direito, em sete áreas de especialização, bem como o grau de mestre em Direito e Gestão. Com o intuito de dar visibilidade ao resultado da investigação, a Escola do Porto da Faculdade de Direito tomou a decisão de publicar as dissertações de mestrado que obtiveram as mais elevadas classificações. Assim, são publicadas, anualmente, as melhores dissertações de mestrado cujas provas se tenham realizado até dezembro do ano civil anterior. Esta divulgação permite partilhar investigação de qualidade com a demais comunidade científica. Para além disso, constitui um incentivo para a qualificação da investigação dos mestrandos em Direito e em Direito e Gestão. É nossa convicção que esta iniciativa contribui para uma profícua partilha de conhecimento e que permite a abertura de uma via dialogante com a comunidade jurídica e a sociedade civil. O presente número integra quarenta e sete dissertações. São apresentadas por ordem alfabética de autor e abarcam áreas tão diversas como o Direito Criminal, o Direito Internacional e Europeu, o Direito da Empresa e dos Negócios, o Direito do Trabalho, o Direito Administrativo, o Direito Fiscal, e o Direito Privado. A coordenação deste projeto pretende deixar público agradecimento ao trabalho minucioso e dedicado da Dra. Isabel Ferreira.

- Deaftopia: utopian representations and community dreams by sign language peoplesPublication . Gil, CristinaDeaftopia conceptualizes utopian and dystopian manifestations of Sign Language Peoples, drawing from Deaf-led cultural productions. These cultural objects contain narratives and discourses that stem from diverse sources, including Deaf artwork and films, Deaf literature and visuature, Deaf-led activist demonstrations, and even political efforts for sign language recognition. Many perspectives are possible within Deaftopia. The utopian discourse enables us to get a glimpse of an improved societal scaffold, where sign language and Deaf culture thrives, while dystopian counter narratives and discourses of resistance forewarn us about the threats and dangers to Sign Language Peoples and their cultural legacy. This essay outlines findings from my doctoral research, with the aim not only to bring forth knowledge of Deaf culture, but also to contribute to its preservation. This is the role of Deaftopia for Sign Language Peoples.

Hanenberg, PeterThe supervision and guidance of doctoral candidates have often followed an inconsistent path, frequently due to a lack of clear criteria from supervisors. There is also some misunderstanding regarding the role of the supervisor/tutor, although significant differences are observed in the approaches across different scientific fields. This topic needs further reflection. The paper considers the quality of supervision and progress monitoring in doctoral education paths.
