- A condição da mulher nos sectores do cinema e do audiovisual em PortugalPublication . Burnay, Catarina Duff; Félix, João; Tavares, PatríciaThis study on the Condition of Women in the Film and Audiovisual Sectors in Portugal was promoted by MUTIM – Mulheres Trabalhadoras das Imagens em Movimento, an association founded in 2022, whose mission is precisely to think about and leverage the presence of women in cinema and audiovisual in Portugal, promoting parity and equitable representation, and by XX Element Project-Associação Cultural, a cultural association founded in 2016 that seeks to be an agent of intervention in the fight to promote equity, respect and inclusion of all people, through the development of artistic projects. In order to listen to the feelings and experiences of the women involved professionally in these sectors, the two associations created an online survey questionnaire and distributed it to workers in these fields without any gender bias. In a second phase, in-depth interviews were carried out with ten female professionals, as a way of identifying/specifying particular situations and complementing the information found in the survey. Simultaneously, the associations analysed three grants awarded by ICA: New Talents and First Works; Support for Cinema; and Support for Audiovisual and Multimedia. They also mapped the gender of professionals holding managerial positions in public bodies that support the cinema and audiovisual sectors, as well as in the most relevant management bodies and boards of the three main audiovisual media groups in Portugal.

- The challenges of the relationship between doctors and patients in the digital agePublication . Barreto, Amilcar IsmaelRemote healthcare is rapidly evolving with the integration of various technologies, including 5G and 6G connectivity, which will play a crucial role in the next generation of healthcare. This study aims to identify the challenges in the doctor-patient relationship in the digital age, focusing on whether digitalization improves clinical care and increases patient proximity. The methodology involves a literature review, summarizing key articles, and discussing the results. The findings suggest a shift in the patient’s role from passive assistance to active consumption of health information, promoting greater involvement in health maintenance and care. It is suggested that health professionals and patients should be educated to overcome communication barriers and encourage the correct use of the internet for medical assistance. The study’s methodology includes a narrative review of literature and a summary table of key articles.
- Nuno Nunes-Ferreira to reach one hundredPublication . Peters, Dzifa; Koncz, Linda
- Manufacturing public perception: big lies, alternative facts, and controlled languagePublication . Ribeiro, NelsonThe chapter argues that propaganda techniques of the 20th century, such as the production of “big lies” and “alternative facts” remain central in contemporary attempts to persuade people to believe in falsehoods. Likewise, pre-propaganda, the control of language, and the rewriting of history, which Jacques Ellul and George Orwell described in their seminal works, continue to be at the forefront of contemporary propagandistic strategies. Using examples that range from the Spanish Civil War to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the chapter discusses how today’s propaganda can be understood through the lens of concepts that have shed light on how earlier regimes and leaders used propaganda to lead people to support war and authoritarian regimes. By looking into examples from the past, the chapter also discusses citizens’ agency in countering propaganda and how subversive media consumption practices can help circumvent the control imposed by dictators on people’s access to information.
- On the centrality of propagandaPublication . Zelizer, Barbie; Ribeiro, NelsonImagine a world without media, and then ask yourself: would propaganda still be possible? How would governments convey their truest, even if most malign, intentions? How would corporate executives give shape to products still unfamiliar to their consumers? How would platforms sustain public engagement? How would local municipalities keep people safe and informed in times of natural disaster or war? How would children learn?
- Media and propaganda in an age of disinformationPublication . Ribeiro, Nelson; Zelizer, BarbieA critical and timely collection that argues for the centrality of propaganda in discussions about the contemporary media landscape and its informational ecosystems. This book explores how “propaganda,” a foundational concept within media and communication studies, has recently been replaced by alternative terms (disinformation, misinformation, and fake news) that fail to capture the continuities and disruptions of ongoing strategic attempts to (mis)guide public opinion. Edited by Nelson Ribeiro and Barbie Zelizer, the collection highlights how these concepts must be understood as part of a long legacy of propaganda and not just as new phenomena that have emerged in the context of the digital media environment. Chapters explore the strategies and effects of propaganda through a variety of globally diverse case studies, featuring both democracies and autocratic regimes, and highlight how only by understanding propagandistic forms and strategies can we fully begin to understand how public opinion is being molded today by those who resort to deception and falsehood to gain or keep hold of power. An important resource for students and scholars of media and communication studies and those who are studying and/or researching media and propaganda, media and power, disinformation, fake news, and political communication.
