- An exploratory study of cultural distance and perceptions of relational riskPublication . Silva, Susana Costa e; Nardon, LuciaraThis chapter is part of a research project examining the role of culture differences in foreign partnerships. We build on prior research on culture distance to explore the influence of perceptions of cultural on perceived relational risk. Perceived relational risk is as the degree of satisfaction of being involved in business activities with nationals of a given country. Contrary to expectations, our analysis suggests that cultural differences are sometimes perceived as desirable characteristics and may be associated with lower relational risk. We speculate that culture distance is an asymmetric construct in which the perception cultural difference may be interpreted as positive or if riding on the perspective from which the reading is made and of the task in which the perception is formed.

- Business Processes: Four PerspectivesPublication . Melão, Nuno Filipe Rosa; Pidd, MichaelAs organizations strive to do things faster, cheaper, and better, it is increasingly important to redesign and improve business processes so as to meet customer needs efficiently and effectively. Although there is widespread literature on business process transformation, there is little discussion of the nature of business processes. This is surely important if transformation is to be successful. This chapter provides a conceptual framework to support a thorough exploration of the nature of business processes. The framework uses four viewpoints to group different notions of business processes, each highlighting certain aspects while placing less emphasis on others. The viewpoints provide the basis for a discussion of the strengths and limitations of different modeling approaches used in the transformation of business processes. We conclude that business processes are multifaceted, and, therefore, successful transformation may require the combination of both soft and hard modeling approaches.

- Customer-oriented global supply chains: port logistics in the era of globalization and digitizationPublication . Cacho, José Luís; Marques, Luís; Nascimento, ÁlvaroLogistic services are central to the design and management of any supply chain. Due to recent technological advances, modern supply chains are challenging traditional market boundaries in ways that both influence and are influenced by consumer behavior (e.g., Amazon, Alibaba, or JD.com). Economically speaking, corporations are changing along the way resources are being used in production. At the firm level, management decisions follow cost efficiency and risk management principles, pursuing a costrisk tradeoff equilibrium. Theoretically, operations organized within the boundaries of the firm are just those for which the markets are unable to offer a more efficient alternative, whereas the link between buyers and sellers (i.e., demand and supply in the market) is intermediated by logistics services, such as transport, to mention but one. As technological innovation, social transformation, and consumer behavior threaten firms’ traditional boundaries, logistics need to adjust and adapt to new and emerging challenges, its costs, and risks to end consumers.
