- Dietary supplementation with hydrolyzed yeast and its effect on the performance, intestinal microbiota, and immune response of weaned piglets.Publication . Berto, Patrícia N.; Tse, Marcos L.P.; Ramos, Denis R.A.; Saleh, Mayra A.D.; Miassi, Gabriela M.; Yamatogi, Ricardo S.; Berto, Dirlei A.; Neto, Messias A.T.The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of autolyzed yeast on performance, cecal microbiota, and leukogram of weaned piglets. A total of 96 piglets of commercial line weaned at 21-day-old were used. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four treatments (diets containing 0.0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, and 0.9% autolyzed yeast), eight replicates, and three animals per pen in order to evaluate daily weight gain, daily feed intake, and feed conversion in periods of 0 to 15, 0 to 26, and 0 to 36 days. Quadratic effects of autolyzed yeast inclusion were observed on the feed conversion from 0 to 15 days, on daily weight gain from 0 to 15 days, 0 to 26 days and, 0 to 36 days, indicating an autolyzed yeast optimal inclusion level between 0.4% and 0.5%. No effect from autolyzed yeast addition was observed on piglet daily feed intake, cecal microbiota, and leukogram; however, i.m. application of E. coli lipopolysaccharide reduced the values of total leukocytes and their fractions (neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and rods). Therefore, autolyzed yeast when provided at levels between 0.4% and 0.5% improved weaned piglets’ performance.
- Exposições artísticas e a tecnologia digital: novas linguagens, novos públicos, e novos originais?Publication .

- Identification and quantification of stilbenes (piceatannol and resveratrol) in passiflora edulis by-productsPublication . Krambeck, Karolline; Oliveira, Ana; Santos, Delfim; Pintado, Maria Manuela; Baptista Silva, João Baptista; Lobo, José Manuel Sousa; Amaral, Maria HelenaRecently, studies on the by-products from the food industry, such as passion fruit seeds, have significantly increased, as these can have an added value, due to their properties, such as potential antioxidant activity. This study was conducted to determine the presence of piceatannol and resveratrol in various extracts of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) seeds from Madeira Island and a commercial passion fruit oil was used as reference. The commercial oil and the extracts that were obtained by traditional Soxhlet method with ethanol and acetone did not reveal the presence of the two stilbenes, piceatannol and resveratrol. However, the extracts that were obtained by the ultrasound method showed significant amounts of piceatannol and resveratrol when compared with the commercial oil. The presence of these compounds indicates that this oil could have potential application in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, due to their proven antioxidant and anti-aging properties.
- Glyphosate in portuguese adults – a pilot studyPublication . Nova, Paulo; Calheiros, Cristina S.C.; Silva, MargaridaBackground: Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum biocide and the active ingredient in the most widely used herbicides worldwide. Since 2015, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified it as a Class 2A carcinogen, global interest in this chemical spiked particularly as regards exposure of the general population. Objective: An exploratory glyphosate exposure assessment was conducted among Portuguese adults. Methods: Self-selected participants provided first morning urine which was tested for glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) at two distinct periods of time, by two different laboratories using gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography linked to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), respectively. Results: In the first round of testing 28% and 50% presented detectable levels of glyphosate and AMPA respectively, with median values of 0.25 and 0.16 μg/L. Systematically available internal dose values were 8.20E- 06 mg/Kg (glyphosate) and 5.04-05 mg/Kg (AMPA). In the second round 73% and 97% presented detectable levels of glyphosate and AMPA respectively with median values of 0.13 and 0.10 μg/L. Systematically available internal dose values were 4.00E-06 mg/Kg (glyphosate) and 3.00E-06 mg/Kg (AMPA). Conclusions: Glyphosate exposure was detected among Portuguese adults, with percentages of glyphosate and AMPA contaminated urine in both rounds of testing and above values from previous studies in other European countries. Systematically available internal doses values were below EFSA’s risk assessment values (ADI or AOEL), and as such, the concentration values measured in this study are not per se a human health problem. Even though there were study limitations, it is the first assessment in Portugal and contributes to the overall knowledge map of glyphosate exposure in Europe.
- Manual of good practices in health literacy – training healthcare professionalsPublication . Arriaga, M. Telo de; Raposo, B.; Silva, C. Ribeiro da; Silva, N. Chaves da; Mata, F.; Filipe, J.; Carvalho, A.; Santos, B. Estela dosIn Portugal, 5 in 10 people present low levels of health literacy, 11% of them have inadequate levels and 28% problematic. This low level of health literacy of the Portuguese population entails individual and social costs that, ultimately, lead to a decrease of the autonomy of the individual.Nowadays, the increase of the population’s health literacy levels is seen as both strategic and crucial, as well as a way to improve the population’s quality of life and well-being, arising as both a challenge and a priority. Promoting health literacy presents itself as an effective strategy that addresses both health and education, endowing the individual with reflection and action regarding the opportunities to promote their health. The healthcare professional, apart from his clinical skills, may, through a good verbal and non-verbal communicational process, guide and influence the individual’s decisions, especially in cases of low health literacy levels. The communication between the individual and the healthcare professional plays an important role in the whole interaction. Sometimes, the difficulty in understanding the communication with the healthcare professional may affect the acceptance of proposals, recommendations and associated behavioural change. With this in mind, the “Manual of Good Practices in Health Literacy – Training Healthcare Professionals” was developed to deepen the concept of health literacy, emphasising the importance of disease prevention and health promotion versus disease treatment, and has as one of its goals to encourage the development of effective interaction and communication strategies by healthcare professionals, facilitating the information transmission process. With the information, healthcare professionals can familiarise themselves with good practices in promoting health literacy in different contexts such as in primary healthcare, hospitals, pharmacies and in the Portuguese SNS24 (NHS25), as well as at different stages of the life-cycle. The Manual will hopefully be used by healthcare professionals as an aid to stimulate their reflection and action regarding the opportunities in promoting health literacy among the population. In this Manual, conceptual aspects related to health literacy are initially addressed, followed by an analysis of the main obstacles inherent to its promotion, given their importance in obtaining positive results, as well as behavioural change strategies. It also addresses the implementation of good practices in health literacy, on an analysis comprehending all lifecycle stages and healthcare settings. Finally, it presents a summary of the main methods and means to be considered while promoting health literacy. The implementation and dissemination of this Manual are therefore of great relevance for capacitating healthcare professionals and providing them with the tools, knowledge, interaction and communication strategies necessary for the promotion of health literacy, encouraging their sense of autonomy and critical thinking in decision making, therefore increasing their levels of health literacy and the levels of health literacy of the Portuguese population.

- Rat olfactory mucosa mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (om-mscs): a characterization studyPublication . Alvites, Rui D.; Branquinho, Mariana V.; Caseiro, Ana R.; Amorim, Irina; Pedrosa, Sílvia Santos; Rêma, Alexandra; Faria, Fátima; Porto, Beatriz; Oliveira, Cláudia; Teixeira, Paula; Magalhães, Rui; Geuna, Stefano; Varejão, Artur S. P.; Maurício, Ana C.Stem/stromal cell-based therapies are a branch of regenerative medicine and stand as an attractive option to promote the repair of damaged or dysfunctional tissues and organs. Olfactory mucosa mesenchymal stem/stromal cells have been regarded as a promising tool in regenerative therapies because of their several favorable properties such as multipotency, high proliferation rate, helpful location, and few associated ethical issues. These cells are easily accessible in the nasal cavity of most mammals, including the rat, can be easily applied in autologous treatments, and do not cope with most of the obstacles associated with the use of other stem cells. Despite this, its application in preclinical trials and in both human and animal patients is still limited because of the small number of studies performed so far and to the nonexistence of a standard and unambiguous protocol for collection, isolation, and therapeutic application. In the present work a validation of a protocol for isolation, culture, expansion, freezing, and thawing of olfactory mucosa mesenchymal stem/stromal cells was performed, applied to the rat model, as well as a biological characterization of these cells. To investigate the therapeutic potential of OM-MSCs and their eventual safe application in preclinical trials, the main characteristics of OMSC stemness were addressed.
