- Diálogos entre literatura e cinema: Adaptação cinematográfica de narrativas queirosianasPublication . Sobral, Filomena AntunesHistorically, narrative art is assumed as a fundamental element of human living. In this sense, cinema and literature come together in the territory of literary adaptation in order to satisfy a collective need. Thus, in the context of intertextual dialogue, we understand that many filmic contents have its roots in classical novels, such as the Portuguese well-known canonical writer Eça de Queirós. Eça' literary heritage has been transposed in film over time and the latest creation by Manoel de Oliveira (Singularities of a blond girl, 2009), based on a novel from the nineteenth century by Eça de Queirós, is the confirmation that classic texts from this author continue to catalyze the filmmakers' interest and enhance contemporary interpretations. This interest is explained by the fact that Eça de Queirós' novels, not only offer us sublime narratives and whose dramatic potential is well known, but it also creates plots, characters and social or cultural representations that, although ironic and caricatured, continue to be recognized in modern times. Therefore, it seems that if literature collaborates closely with film, this successful association allows not only for the renewal of literary memory, but also for the democratization of cultural Portuguese literary heritage and perpetuates these stories to new generations, which seem of understandable importance. Based on the argument that cinema and literature establish a productive relationship in the context of literary adaptation, we intend to make an incursion through Eça de Queiros' narratives which were adapted into film by specially highlighting the revitalization of classical narratives provided by cinema.
- Measurement of oxygen transmission rate through foamed materials for bottle closuresPublication . Poças, Maria F.; Ferreira, Belmiro; Pereira, Joel; Hogg, TimThe determination of the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) through closures in glass bottles is becoming increasingly important for quality control of different batches and for development purposes. The Mocon method for measuring OTR is globally accepted and used in different applications. However, one of the major drawbacks this method presents when applied to bottle/closures systems is the long time required to obtain stable measurements when 40 mm long closures are tested. This paper describes a method to obtain OTR values with samples of reduced thickness with much shorter measurements time, since the condition of steady state during measurements is achieved faster and compares the estimated full-length commercial closure OTR with experimental values

- Between scientists and public: reframing public participation in science through bioethicsPublication . Carvalho, Mónica; Carvalho, Ana Sofia; Araújo, Joana; Brites, MartaDiscourses and techniques about the relationship between science and the public have remarkably developed in the past four decades. Science communication has become an important issue for the scientific governance. Public confidence in science, decision-making and support to democracy have changed the predominance of a top-down communication model, from scientists to public, to a more participative one – the Public Engagement with Science (PES). The Institute of Bioethics at Portuguese Catholic University, in Oporto, is doing research in the role of science in society issues and the aim of this paper is to discuss the relevance of Bioethics to improve PES. The bioethical issues seem to draw people‟s attention to certain scientific facts, confronting them with the consequences of science and improving their skills in deliberating on scientific issues. Moreover, ethics influences the way one understands public engagement, „scientific citizenship‟ or „science governance‟. The role of ethics is not to re-edit the old fashionable deficit perspective which usually focuses on the impact of science and technology from the perspective of non-experts. Ethics is a theoretical and practical reference for changing the science-making in the near future, and it makes us consider the public as playing a more important role than that of mere spectators with lack of scientific knowledge or with emotional concerns. The ethical reflection could redefine the non-experts place in the context of science, involving people with science, making them not simply aware of scientific issues but also involved in the process of decision-making. On the other hand, bioethics can also contribute to the participation of scientists in the ethical reflection that takes place outside the labs, broadening their role as citizen scientists.
