- The failure of Lehman Brothers : how did the collapse affect the banking system in the U.S.?Publication . Gaspar, Raquel Sofia Neves; Cerqueiro, Geraldo Manuel AlvesThis paper identifies more than 200 U.S. commercial banks and addresses two explicit research questions: First, did Lehman's collapse impact the U.S. banking system, and second, did the impact of Lehman's failure vary with a broad set of bank performance characteristics, namely risk profile, capital level/adequacy and leverage? These questions are central to understanding how the collapse affected the banking system and why some banks were affected to a much greater extent. Based on an event study structure, the outcomes provide evidence in support of size heterogeneity and unravel that the collateral damages from the collapse were discriminatory toward the largest banks. Additionally, the results support the hypothesizes that low risk and better capitalized banks were in an improved position to face negative shocks that materialized to bank value during LB’s bankruptcy. Indeed, despite the uncertainty observed during the days surrounding the bankruptcy announcement, market participants were able to make rational decisions regarding their investments in a way that is relatively consistent with fundamentals. This “discrimination” towards certain banks is an argument against the theory that investors panicked and started discarding assets indiscriminately and acts in favor of the “information-based transmission” theory, which defends that markets participants were able to discriminate and arbitrage.
- Is Palladium a safe haven asset?Publication . Água, João Pedro Rodrigues Freire Borda d´; Fidalgo, Eva SchliephakeThis dissertation investigates the role of Palladium in the global financial system as a safe haven asset against stocks of major emerging and developed countries. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the price of Palladium has increased steadily and dramatically. Using a daily, weekly and monthly data covering the period of 1978 to 2019, this dissertation finds evidence that Palladium is neither a hedge nor a safe haven asset for major European stock markets, BRIC countries, Australia, Canada and Japan. Nevertheless, we find that Palladium is a safe haven asset in the case of adverse market stocks for US stock market using monthly data. Moreover, we look at particular crisis periods and we notice that Palladium is a safe haven asset for Brazil and US stocks during the Asian crisis in 1997, but in the most recent crisis, it shows a positive co-movement with stocks providing a weak safe haven asset during these periods
- Climate responsibility premium : an event study on the US climate policy shockPublication . Gouveia, José Luís Barros; Fidalgo, Eva SchliephakeDonald Trump’s election, Scott Pruitt’s nomination and the withdrawal of the United States of America from the Paris Agreement created expectations of a weaker environmental regulation in the country. This thesis studies the stock market reactions to these events on the Russell 3000 constituents. Investors rewarded carbon-intensive industries on the short run, as naïve intuition would suggest. However, and least expected, environmentally responsible firms also benefitted from these shocks. Such results are explained by the general increase in climate awareness, sparked by these events. Over the long run, the climate responsibility premium grew until the end of the year 2017, stagnating through the whole year of 2018. Changes in Donald Trump’s political influence consistently brought two different shocks to the climate responsibility premium. One from the perceived environmental deregulation, and the other from the rise in general climate awareness. The awareness shock prevailed until the end of 2017, benefitting climate responsible firms. The deregulation shock started overriding in 2018, as an increase in the President’s popularity began negatively affecting the premium
- How Lego rebuilt and became the top toymaker in the worldPublication . Geislinger, Adrian Cornelius; Saraiva, Gonçalo de Oliveira Vieira DinisLego is an exemplary case for a classic turnaround that put the company in an even better position in the future. In the past, Lego’s sales increased steadily over the years, however, in the 90s they showed signs of struggle and they reported their first-ever loss in the history of the company. What followed was a turbulent ride for the toymaker. After several attempts that failed, Lego finally managed to change their downward ride drastically and achieve a textbook turnaround. The case will highlight actions that resulted in the turnaround and long-term competitive advantage. Additionally, it will give information about how a change of leadership, especially during a crisis, but also in the long-term, affect the firm’s performance. The case will demonstrate how theoretical concepts come to life and it aims to give students a better understanding by presenting a compelling real-life example and to contribute to the turnaround studies.
- Understanding decoupling in the relationship between social enterprises and impact investors : an exploratory studyPublication . Hofmann, Malte; Ramus, TommasoSocial enterprises are increasingly required by impact investors to provide reliable indicators about their societal impact in order to get funds to support their activities. However, measuring social impact is extremely complex. In this exploratory thesis, I study the drivers leading to decoupling of impact measurement procedures in the relationships of social enterprises and impact investors. To do so, I conducted semi-structured interviews with both social enterprises and impact investors, used field notes from group discussions and industry reports. The data shows that the motivation for impact measurement, the requirements for metrics as well as impact measurement procedures and the characteristics of investors have a significant influence on the risk of decoupling. Furthermore, I show that due to the strong and transparent relationship between social enterprises and investors, organisations rather occur in means-end than policy-practice decoupling. While policy-practice decoupling is characterized by symbolic implementation of policies, organisations occurring in means-end decoupling implement policies, without them influencing their activities and outcomes. Based on my results I build a process model that helps to get a better understanding of decoupling in social enterprises and to asses and reduce the risk of decoupling
- Digital transformation in manufacturing : determining the potential of chatbots in manufacturingPublication . Salvado, João Francisco Monteiro Madeira Afonso; Pinho, André de AlmeidaIn recent years there has been an investment in Digital Transformation, as it can simplify and accelerate processes while increasing efficiency. Chatbots, also known as virtual agents, are an important component of digitalization. These programs facilitate user to computer interaction by using natural language (Khan, 2018). These are more commonly deployed in customer service but have a wide range of uses such as education and logistics (Folstad et al, 2018). The manufacturing industry is undergoing its fourth industrial revolution, however, chatbots are still rare in the industry. This thesis aims to find what are the use cases of chatbots within the industry, their potential and how to successfully deploy them, by interviewing chatbot developers and manufacturing professionals. The interviews indicate that chatbots as an aid for training is the most impactful use along with customer support and order processing.

- Robotic process automation : impact and best practices in portuguese banksPublication . Carmo, Gonçalo Pires de Carvalho Mota; Pinho, André de AlmeidaRobotic Process automation is the technology that allows companies to configure software to emulate the interaction of an employee with digital systems. This software is also known as “robots” and they have the innate ability to perform tasks faster, more accurately and to work 24 hours a day. In banks, most support functions are located in back-offices and the tasks performed there are mainly repetitive tasks that follow a set of rules. These types of processes are a good candidate for RPA automation. The Portuguese banking sector is still in an early stage of digitalization. In general, banks are innovating in their front-offices, however, apart from a few players in the industry, their back-offices still heavily rely on paper and currently have a low level of automation. By conducting interviews with topical experts that have been present in RPA implementations in banks, this study determined the impacts of the technology in Portuguese bank’s back-offices and the best practices that should be followed in order for implementations to be successful in future endeavors. The results show that RPA can have a significant impact in the industry, namely a reduction in operational costs. Furthermore, always considering scalability for future RPA projects and providing functional and technical documentation are among the resulting best practices.
- Introducing Artificial Intelligence into sustainable business models : development of an artifact to facilitate sustainable business model innovationPublication . Politt, Clemens Carl Emil; Bohnsack, RenéThrough the rise of sustainable business models, social and environmental dimensions made their way into the renowned research field of business models and business model innovation. Thereby, sustainable business model patterns can support the challenging process of designing and innovating appropriate sustainable business models. While it seems to be a promising approach to employ artificial intelligence and machine learning for sustainable business model innovation, a generally acknowledged lack of corresponding support systems exists. Therefore, this study addresses the development of an information technology-based artifact that facilitates the process of sustainable business model innovation by leveraging sustainable business model patterns. The artifact comprises two different machine learning models. The first model focuses on creating the required algorithm for detecting sustainable business model patterns based on company descriptions. The second model provides a direct link to public news articles. Based on the users' individual preferences, the artifact can execute customized queries and detect news articles containing sustainable business model patterns. Thus, it shows valuable insights into the proper application of sustainable business models and should be considered as “proof of concept” for future research.
