  • The benefits and challenges of blockchain technology and ehealth implementation in Estonia: a literature review

    This study aimed to review the existing literature on the benefits and challenges of the implementation of digital eHealth systems, using the success story of Estonia; and explores theimpact of blockchain technology in facilitating eHealth adoption. By using the search query string“Estoni*” and (“eHealth” OR “e-Health” OR “Blockchain”) on the Scopus database (on April 2023)a narrative review was conducted over the relevant peer-reviewed publications written in English.The Scopus database and its integrated search engine presented 74 publications of which 18 filled the selected criteria. Access, efficiency, quality of care, cooperation and data sharing, knowledge, and control were among the most mentioned benefits of eHealth. Disparities, confidentiality lack of trust,financing, the cognitive burden, and the quality of data were the most mentioned challenges of implementing digital technologies in healthcare. This research provides an extensive up-to-date review of the benefits and challenges of the implementation of eHealth on a nationwide level, whilst analyzing the impact of blockchain technology. The article brings attention to the potential future applications of eHealth developments such as Computerized Decision Support Systems and crossborder healthcare
  • De realidades distintas, necessidades transversais: um estudo comparativo entre um hospital público português e um hospital público inglês

    A redução de custos no setor da saúde representa um dos maiores desafios para a sua gestão pois, sendo esta fulcral para a sustentabilidade do setor, o seu processo de operacionalização não deve nunca pôr em causa a qualidade do serviço prestado. Apesar da pertinência, esta temática tem merecido pouca atenção por parte dos investigadores, pese embora este ser um problema transversal a vários países, independentemente dos seus modelos de financiamento em saúde. Com a realização deste estudo pretende-se uma análise comparativa dos principais constrangimentos relatados por colaboradores de um hospital público português e de um hospital público inglês, com o objetivo de identificar dificuldades percecionadas e que estratégias têm vindo a ser adotadas para a redução de custos. Este é um estudo qualitativo, descritivo e exploratório, recorrendo ao estudo de caso para estabelecer uma abordagem comparativa. Dos resultados obtidos, destaca-se o papel central dos profissionais de saúde, a reestruturação da prestação de cuidados, a correta utilização dos serviços por parte dos utentes, o desperdício e o benchmarking como áreas de atuação centrais para a redução de custos sem prejuízo da qualidade, apontando-se como focos de intervenção para o desenvolvimento de estudos futuros.
  • Health management challenges: the case of hospital from Behind-os-Montes and Alto Douro and East Kent hospitals university NHS foundation trust

    It is imperative that healthcare systems, regardless of their source of funding, are sustainable, provide quality care and develop towards their customers’ expectations. This study aims at a comparative analysis between two hospital centres, one belonging to the Portuguese National Health Service and the other to the British National Health Service, in order to identify which strategies have been adopted by their hospital management to reduce health costs without prejudice to the quality of the services provided. To this end, semi-structure interviews were conducted with the financial directors of both hospitals. The questions presented focus on changes in terms of financing, the relationship between costs and quality, improving efficiency by cutting costs, strategies for reducing waste and operating vectors for improving efficiency. In the Portuguese case, his perspective focuses on the management and organisation of services from a perspective intrinsic to the organisation, characterised by restructuring and innovation, based on close and cooperative interrelations between sectors and hierarchies. In the British testimony, we verify a perspective more focused on the outside of the organisation, placing its focus on an inter-relational triangulation between population, organisations and professionals. The focus on health professionals, technology, reorganisation of services and waste stands out as being four fundamental pillars of action for an efficient cost reduction, without impairing quality, considered as areas of intervention relevant to the development of future studies. We also highlight the managers’ concern in cost reduction without prejudice to quality and in promoting services adjusted to the needs of the users.
  • Metacognição: um apoio ao processo de aprendizagem

    O presente artigo, a partir de uma incursão pela literatura, visa contribuir para a clarificação do conceito de metacognição. Neste sentido, procura evidenciar o papel das estratégias metacognitivas na potencialização da aprendizagem, ou seja, no desenvolvimento pelo aluno de modos eficazes para lidar com a informação proveniente do meio e com os próprios processos de pensamento. Argumenta-se que apesar da polêmica acerca do conceito de metacognição, é inegável a sua contribuição para a aprendizagem, uma vez que os treinos que contemplam atividades metacognitivas têm produzido melhores resultados no que se refere a realização escolar.
  • Analysis of the factors that influence the success of relationship marketing in academic libraries

    Purpose: This study aims to identify the main dimensions of relationship marketing that have the greatest impact on users’ satisfaction and loyalty in academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative study was conducted. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey, directed to the users of four libraries of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, which resulted a total of 292 valid responses. The necessary sample size for the completion of this study was calculated based on Daniel's calculator Soper. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 27.0) software and structural equation methods were use to test the proposed model. Originality: This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the specific dimensions of relationship marketing that are most influential in the context of university libraries. While prior research has explored relationship marketing in various contexts, this study focuses on the unique environment of academic libraries, thereby providing novel insights into enhancing user satisfaction and fostering loyalty among library users. Findings: The results show that the relationship marketing dimensions that contribute the most to users’ satisfaction and loyalty are: "relational behaviour", "understanding needs" and "quality of services". Additionally, the study identifies the positive relationship between user satisfaction and loyalty, emphasizing the critical role of relationship marketing in fostering long-term user loyalty in the academic library setting. Theoretical/methodological contributions: Increase of scientific knowledge through the validation of a relationship marketing model, through which its implications for the management of university libraries are evidenced. Practical implications: Understanding the main dimensions of relationship marketing that impact user satisfaction and loyalty allows library managers to adapt their strategies and services to motivate and attract users to their spaces and to better meet their needs.
  • Dynamics of knowledge creation in intra-organizational networks

    Introduction: Knowledge has shown growing importance in economy, as a differentiation factor and a competitiveness enhancer, being considered as an important pillar of modern society development. Networks within and between organizations, as a strategy to potentiate knowledge sharing might be considered one of the most important approaches an organization may adopt. Objectives: To evaluate how the dynamics of knowledge creation occur in an intra-organizational network. Methods: This study is developed according to a descriptive and exploratory typology and uses the methodology of a case study developed over an optical services network in Portugal. Results: The results present evidence that the context of an intra-organizational network may favor a collective learning environment, mainly represented by the interaction that occurs between the collaborators of the various units and with the help of several “interaction” and knowledge creation spaces. Conclusions: The potential attributed to knowledge and networks in promoting the best organizational practices justify the interest of this analysis and the contribution of this study to the business environment.
  • Corporate social responsibility communication practices in the Portuguese banking

    Introduction: In a world shaped by globalization, where organizations are forced to adjust their objectives to the most notable environmental and social changes as well as the prominent crisis of values, society has awakened to the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR communication practices promote and disseminate initiatives based on social and ethical principles, mobilizing companies to adopt and take part in them. Objetive: conduct a survey of the typology of CSR actions communicated by the Portuguese banking sector as well as to evaluate bankers' perceptions about the subject. Methods: The study is developed according to a descriptive and exploratory typology and uses case study methodology in a banking institution. Results: Results indicate there are multiple disclosure actions, namely social and environmental, mostly aimed at the external community, widely known and recognized by employees. Conclusion: These findings provide valuable information for banking professionals and lay the foundation for future research.
  • Representatividade do movimento americano #metoo nos media online portugueses

    Os abusos sexuais são um problema transversal que afeta diferentes sociedades. Outubro de 2017 assumiu-se como um período de viragem, devido ao aparecimento do movimento #MeToo. Neste artigo, propomo-nos analisar os conteúdos publicados por três jornais online portugueses para responder a: 1) qual a representatividade do movimento na imprensa online portuguesa? Foi feito o levantamento do conteúdo das notícias, a fim de aferir: 2) a diferença ou semelhança entre conteúdos publicados pelos jornais online em análise. Do estudo feito, conclui-se que há maior proliferação de informação nos media nacionais de notícias relacionadas com o impacto do movimento no panorama internacional e pouca representatividade do movimento em casos portugueses.
