- An exploratory study of cultural differences and perceptions of relational riskPublication . Silva, Susana Costa e; Nardon, LuciaraThis working paper is part of a research project examining the role of culture and culture differences in foreign partnerships. We build on prior research on culture distance to explore the influence of perceptions of cultural differences on perceived relational risk. Perceived relational risk is defined here as the degree of satisfaction of being involved in business activities with nationals of a given country. Contrary to expectations, preliminary analysis suggests that cultural differences are sometimes perceived as a desirable characteristic and may be associated with lower relational risk. We speculate that culture distance is an asymmetric construct in which the perception of a cultural difference may be interpreted as positive or negative depending on the perspective from which the reading is made and the nature of the task in which the perception is formed. Plans for future research are discussed.
- Analysis of research ideas: combining metaphors for researchPublication . Morais, Ricardo; Martins, Carlos; Kansikas, JuhaThis paper presents a framework – idea puzzle – for scientific analysis of research ideas. Analysis of research ideas is included in research planning ahead of research implementation and reporting. Research planning is traditionally based on the project metaphor for research which specifies linear tasks, deliverables and deadlines. Such a metaphor does not make explicit, however, decisions which are implicit in research tasks. This gap is fulfilled by the jigsaw puzzle metaphor which specifies interdependent and iterative decisions instead. Idea puzzle framework illustrates the jigsaw puzzle metaphor since it is a synthesis of scientific method in twenty one decisions. Such decisions specify the theoretical, empirical, methodological, rhetoric, and authorial context of a research idea. The main benefits of idea puzzle framework are twofold. On the one hand, it facilitates the learning and teaching of scientific method. On the other hand, it accelerates the scientific generation, analysis, planning, and evaluation of research ideas.
- Analysis of the Relationships between Operations Strategy Paradigms and PerformancePublication . Silveira, Giovani J. C. da; Sousa, RuiWe investigate the relationships between performa nce and three paradigms of manufacturing strategy choice: fit, best practices, and capability development. Dependent variables of performance include efficiency, quality, and flexibility. Regression analyses are used to test hypotheses of paradigm-performance relationships in a large database of international manufacturers. The results suggest that paradigms of capabilities and best practices have direct relationships with efficiency, quality, and flexibility. However, fit did not seem to be directly associated to changes in any performance variable .
- Analyzing consumer-based brand equity on Facebook: The impact of brand genderPublication . Machado, J. C.; Azar, Salim L.; Vacas De Carvalho, Leonor; Mendes, A.; André, R.In recent years, Facebook and other social media have become key players in branding activities. However, empirical research is still needed about the way in which consumerbased brand equity is created on social media. The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between masculine and feminine brand personality and brand equity, on Facebook, and to analyze the mediating role of consumer-brand engagement and brand love on this relationship. Data were collected using an online survey with 614 valid responses. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results support 7 of the 11 hypotheses with significant relationship between analyzed constructs. This study confirms the advantages of a clear gender positioning and extends prior research by suggesting that brands with a strong brand gender identity will encourage brand love. Results also highlight that brand love has a mediating role on the relationship between brand gender and overall brand equity.
- Anticompetitive impact of pseudo-genericsPublication . Rodrigues, Vasco; Gonçalves, Ricardo; Vasconcelos, HélderA puzzling feature of pharmaceuticals markets is that sellers of branded drugs will, sometimes, sell generic versions of their own branded products, either directly or through license agreements. This paper proposes a new theoretical rationale for the fact that the introduction of these pseudo- generics may have anti-competitive e¤ects. In a model that combines horizontal and vertical product di¤erentiation, we show that the producer of the branded product will not sell the pseudo-generic unless faced with competition and that, if she does so, in some circumstances, all prices raise to the bene t of all competitors and the detriment of consumers.
