- The presentationPublication .

Angélico, José PedroThis article reflects on the appropriation of saudade (longing) as a cultural and identity element in the Nós journal, during the period between 1920 and 1935. By relating the Galician and Portuguese contexts, this study discerns how saudade has become a symbolic capital of considerable impact. In this regard, the research emphasises the influence of saudade on both literature and the formation of a Galician cultural identity, highlighting the importance of Nós as a vehicle for political and aesthetic expression.
- Domingo como dia do Senhor e «senhor dos dias». : do cumprimento do preceito à construção de comunidades missionáriasPublication . Rocha, Márcio Miguel Tavares; Leal, Sérgio Filipe PinhoFrom the very beginning of Christianity, Sunday has been considered the main day for the Christian community, as it is associated with key events in the faith, such as celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the sending of the Holy Spirit and the celebration of the Eucharist. Though, over time, the community dimension of Sunday celebrations diminished, reducing Sunday practice to mere passive attendance at Eucharistic worship and strict fulfilment of the Sunday norm. This ignored the liturgical assembly as a community that consciously celebrates the mysteries of faith. Nonetheless, the ecclesial renewal of the Second Vatican Council restored the communal character of Sunday, particularly in the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist in parish communities (cf. SC 42). This dissertation aims to demonstrate that, because of its innate novelty, Sunday remains the day par excellence of the Christian community, and therefore the day of its edification and sending out on mission. In a socio-cultural and religious context characterised by new paradigms, this work offers a reading of the Christian experience of Sunday that is more community-oriented and helps to rediscover the beauty of a community that lives and celebrates its faith. Nourished by the Word and the Bread of Life at every Sunday assembly, this community must bear witness to the Kingdom of God in an ever-changing world.
- Indulgências, um rosto misericordioso de Deus : a história e a teologia da doutrina das indulgênciasPublication . Penha, Raúl Isaac Fonseca Pereira; Duque, João Manuel Correia RodriguesIndulgences are a treasure of the merciful love of God. Sin has consequences – temporal punishment –, which must be healed with good works. And because we belong to the Church – Mystical Body of Christ –, we are not alone in this path and we can be helped by the merits of other members of this Body – communion of Saints: the merits of Christ, achieved in His work of redemption, and the merits of the Saints. The Church, by the authority received from Christ himself, applies these merits – the treasure of the Church – to the faithful who fulfill certain conditions and dispositions. The love offered to us by God through the indulgences is an immense and undeserved gift and must be satisfied by the detachment from sin and the practice of good works. Just as we receive indulgence, so can we offer indulgence to the other members of the Mystical Body who need it. Indulgences are a path of purification so that union with God and with brothers have fewer barriers. Their ultimate end is the communion with God and with others in
the eternity of Heaven. - From support to performance : organizational mechanisms and the experience of expatriate managersPublication . Primerano, Alida; Rajsingh, Peter; Zhang, Ling EleanorThis research focused on the core dimensions of organizational support offered by both parent and host firms to expatriate managers, and on how the perceived support influences their self-assessed job performance. In order to investigate this topic, an analysis of previous studies was conducted, followed by qualitative and in-depth interviews of managers who have undertaken or are still covering an international role. Results showed that companies usually focus only on specific types of organizational support, and there are, therefore, still multiple areas to improve. No specific kinds of aid could be identified between parent and host companies, and informal support always played a central role, also showing the importance of employee perceptions. Lastly, performance was usually positively influenced when help was provided, but it was also not affected with limited support. This study is relevant because it highlighted mechanisms that can be implemented by companies for expatriates, improving their success.
- Machine learning approaches to corporate failure predictionPublication . Schmitt, Angelina; Tran, DanCorporate failure prediction is a central topic in financial literature due to the substantial costs associated with firm failures. At the same time, advances in machine learning have introduced powerful new tools for addressing this challenge. This thesis examines the predictive perfor mance of traditional and machine learning models in forecasting corporate failures, with an evaluation across different prediction horizons. Two iterations of datasets were employed: one based on the established Campbell (Campbell et al., 2008) variables and another extended dataset incorporating accounting, market, and macroe conomic information. Firms were observed over consecutive months until disappearance, fol lowing a hazard model framework (Shumway, 2001). Logistic regression served as the baseline and was compared against random forest and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Model performance was assessed using AUC and other evaluation metrics and feature importance was analyzed to shed light on the main drivers of corporate failure risk. The results indicate that Logistic Regression with Campbell variables performs well over short horizons (one month). However, expanding the feature set and applying machine learning models, particularly ensemble models, substantially improves predictive accuracy and ensures greater stability across longer horizons. These findings underscore the importance of combining richer datasets with advanced algorithms, offering both theoretical contributions to the literature and practical implications for early warning systems, risk management, and corporate monitor ing.
- From Moneyball to AI : the disruptive potential of AI in football scouting and performance analyticsPublication . Costa, Daniel Silva; Rajsingh, PeterThis dissertation investigated how artificial intelligence (AI) potentially disrupts football scouting and performance analytics as well as adoption dynamics shaping implementation. Moneyball is treated as an historical data analytics reference in professional sports. Moneyball disrupted baseball but did not yield comparable transformation in football. AI represents the next step for football disruption. This study employed a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative data from a consumer survey of 106 respondents with qualitative insights from 12 expert interviews from the football industry on barriers and drivers of AI in football scouting. Regressions and mediator/moderator tests identified determinants of acceptance and perceived disruption, while qualitative content analysis assessed experts’ opinions. The research indicated AI is a complement rather than a substitute for human scouts, with long-term strategic alignment and ownership structures supporting data-driven decision-making. Building internal club capabilities and proprietary models will be a crucial differentiator. Perceived as barrier by literature and experts, the survey suggested latent AI acceptance by fans (56.6% neutral, 25.5% high). This study provides insights into technology adoption and perceptions in a dynamic, emotionally charged, and closed environment.
- Digital product passports in consumer electronics : consumer engagement and circular economy implicationsPublication . Blechschmidt, Jan; Casanova, Grace Avila; Rajsingh, PeterDigital Product Passports (DPPs) are a central policy instrument in the European Union9s efforts to advance the circular economy (CE) transition, aiming to improve product transparency. While regulatory, technical, and supply chain dimensions have received much attention, consumer engagement with DPPs and its impact on purchase decisions remains largely unexplored, despite its importance for CE adoption. This study examines both consumer engagement with DPPs and firm responses in the consumer electronics sector, characterized by high material intensity and environmental impact. A mixed-methods approach combined a survey (n = 167) with eleven expert interviews. Survey results showed that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are the only significant predictors of engagement. Experts additionally highlighted factors such as trust, usability, and design. The survey further revealed a positive effect of DPPs on purchase intention and willingness to pay (WTP) for circular consumer electronics, constrained by high price sensitivity. Overall, the findings demonstrate that DPPs can contribute to CE adoption by influencing consumer behavior and shaping circular preferences. Simultaneously, the interviews revealed that their strategic value depends on firm-level responses: firms may treat DPPs merely as compliance instruments or leverage them as strategic tools, thereby fostering circular economy business models (CEBMs).
