Este artigo enquadra numa perspectiva histórica e sociopolítica o surgimento da Licenciatura de Tradução e Interpretação de Língua Gestual Portuguesa na Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, em 1997, destacando o seu impacto na formação e estatuto profissional dos intérpretes de LGP em Portugal, e a sua ligação à Comunidade Surda Portuguesa. O artigo analisa também a relação com os seus alumni,o efeito destes no desenvolvimento da área profissional, e reflecte criticamente sobre os efeitos do Processo de Bolonha e da A3ES, com o recurso a fontes de arquivo institucionais e científicas, sublinhando o legado desta formação pioneira.
This article offers a historical and socio-political contextualisation when establishing the Bachelor's Degree in Portuguese Sign Language Translation and Interpreting at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, in 1997. It examines the programme's role in shaping interpreter training and the professional status of LGP interpreters in Portugal, while also exploring its relationship with the Portuguese Deaf Community. Furthermore, the article also analyses the role of alumni, their contribution to the development of the professional field. It critically assesses the impact of the Bologna Process and the Portuguese Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES). Drawing upon institutional and scholarly archival sources, the article underscores the enduring legacy of this trailblazing academic programme.
