- Time of war and time in war : examining the South Africa vs. Israel casePublication . Esteves, Rita Maria Carreiro Mariz; Lopes, José Alberto Azeredo FerreiraIn the complex arena of international conflicts, the Palestinian-Israeli dispute emerges as a compelling narrative marked by a historical accusation filled with legal maneuvers and geopolitical tensions. From territorial claims to South Africa’s advocacy for Palestinian rights before the ICJ, each aspect reveals layers of complexity in the ongoing conflict. Notably, the ICJ’s first and recent provisional measures indicate a nuanced understanding of the conflict’s evolving dynamics, reflecting the Court’s pivotal role in navigating global tensions. While refraining from a definitive ruling on genocide, the Court’s acknowledgment of the plausibility of South Africa’s claims underscores the magnitude of the situation. Simultaneously, the ICC emerges as a crucial arbiter of justice, transcending political pressures to uphold accountability. However, the challenge of demonstrating intent in cases involving states poses a significant obstacle, prompting critical reflections on the application of international law in such sensible scenarios. This dispute, reminiscent of a global broadcast of atrocity, compels us to confront the darkest chapters of history and reaffirms the imperative of seeking justice and protecting civilian populations.
- Immediate implant placement in damaged extraction sockets : a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literaturePublication . Campi, Marco; Borges, Tiago Gonçalves Ferreira; Almeida, Bruno Alexandre Morais Leitão deBackground: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to observe whether the immediate dental implants placement into damaged sockets is a successful modality for the treatment of hopeless teeth. Materials and Methods: A manual and electronic search was conducted through various databases, (Pubmed, Web Of Science, Scopus and ScienceDirect) to identify various exclusively RCT studies from the last 10 years. This systematic review has been registered on the PROSPERO platform, and the articles identified during the search were selected based on the eligibility criteria. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB2). Results: A total of 626 articles were found, where 5 studies with 135 patients and 138 implants were finally included. In general, the meta-analysis showed homogeneity between the studies, where gender was in balance in the studies, showing more women in the total. The Buccal/Facial Bone thickness showed good results for the experimental group, as did the Pink Esthetic Score (PES) where it also showed favouritism for the Test Group and without statistical significance. Conclusion: Research suggests that immediate implant placement (IIP), in the presence of buccal bone defects, can offer comparable to traditional methods. Bone regeneration surgery is essential to achieve optimal results.
- Comparative outcomes between zirconia and titanium dental implants : a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literaturePublication . Morena, Danilo; Borges, Tiago Gonçalves Ferreira; Almeida, Bruno Alexandre Morais Leitão deIntroduction: In a world where the concept of "Metal Free" is becoming increasingly widespread, there is an observed rise in titanium allergies and hypersensitivity reactions related to titanium particles around implants. Consequently, the use of zirconia implants is being promoted. Despite titanium remaining the gold standard, there are clinical situations that require a different approach. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess whether there were clinically relevant differences in the treatment of edentulous areas between Zr dental implants and the established use of Ti dental implants. Materials and methods: This review work was registered on the PROSPERO platform, and its development was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The electronic search process was conducted on three databases (PubMed/Scopus/Web of Science), including randomized clinical trials from the past 10 years (up to April 2024). Identified articles were analyzed and included/excluded based on pre-defined selection and exclusion criteria. Results: Six randomized clinical trials with a follow-up of at least 3 months (152 patients and 448 implants) were selected. Significant differences were found in values related to survival rate and marginal bone loss at 12 months between Zr and Ti implants, necessitating further improvements in Zr implants and appropriate selection based on the prosthetic protocol. Conclusion: After careful analysis of the results obtained and within the limitations of this systematic review, it was possible to conclude that Ti dental implants have a better survival rate and inferior marginal bone loss when compared with Zr dental implants. Further randomized clinical studies comparing these two different implant materials with a long-term follow-up evaluation are needed.
- Association between oral condition in a population of portuguese children and quality of lifePublication . Ferreira, Nícia Filipa Martins; Moura, Anna Carolina Volpi Mello de; Veiga, Nélio Jorge; Alves, Renata ToledoIntroduction: Studies show a high prevalence of oral problems in children, affecting the quality of life related to oral health. There is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological studies on the oral conditions of Portuguese children. Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of caries, consequences of non-treatment, malocclusion, traumatic dental injuries and MIH in a population of Portuguese children, verifying their association and sociodemographic characteristics with quality of life related to oral health. Methods: After approval by the Health Ethics Committee (CES-UCP no. 30/2019), the study included children aged 3 to 12 years and their guardians. Sociodemographic information and quality of life assessed by the ECOHIS-Pt or P-CPQ-Pt instruments via interview. Clinical data were obtained by oral examination. Statistical analysis compared groups using Student's t test, adopting a significance level of 5% (P < 0.05). Results: 131 children participated in the study, 76 females, 73 with mixed dentition, most living in urban areas, with parents who had between 10 and 12 years of education and a family income of two or more local minimum wages. The prevalence of caries was 48.1% and 9.2% with consequences of non-treatment. More than 80% of children had malocclusion, 16.8% had a history of traumatic dental injuries, and 15.3% had MIH. The average scores showed good quality of life related to oral health. There was an association between quality of life and place of residence, parents' marital status, mother's professional status, monthly family income, tooth decay and traumatic dental injuries, with a greater impact among children under 6 years of age. Conclusion: Portuguese children have a high prevalence of oral diseases, and these have a negative impact on the quality of life of preschool children.
- ESG ratings and sustainable finance : a comprehensive analysis of cost of financing for European firms within the Stoxx Europe 100 indexPublication . Fonseca, Jorge André Araújo da; Pinto, João Filipe MonteiroThis dissertation investigates the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors and the cost of debt for 92 companies listed on the STOXX All Europe 100 Index from 2018 to 2022. It addresses four key questions regarding the impact of overall ESG scores, environmental, social, and governance scores on borrowing costs. Despite negative coefficients indicating a potential inverse relationship, none were statistically significant (p > 0.05), suggesting that ESG performance may not consistently influence borrowing costs. Overall, while ESG considerations are important for sustainability, they may not significantly affect borrowing costs, warranting further research into the nuanced relationship between ESG and financial metrics.
- Risk factors for cancer treatment-related oral mucositis in children : an umbrella reviewPublication . Henrique, Tatiana dos Santos; Silva, Raquel Monteiro Marques da; Correia, Patrícia Nunes; Moura, Anna Carolina Volpi Mello deAim: The aim of this umbrella review is to determine the risk factors associated with cancer-related oral mucositis in children and to establish a system for evidence-based grading of each individual factor. Materials and Methods: This umbrella review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023477370). The study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Four databases were used. The literature search was carried out on 26 November 2023. The inclusion criteria were systematic reviews read in full in English, in a paediatric population with oral mucositis and exposed to oncological treatment. The exclusion criteria were oral mucositis not derived from oncological treatment, systematic reviews that did not include risk factors and letters to the editor, critical reviews and primary research studies. 101 articles were retrieved, excluding duplicates (n=4). The title and abstract of these 97 articles were read, of which 86 were excluded because they did not mention oral mucositis and children. 11 articles were read in full and 6 were excluded because they did not mention risk factors. Results: 5 articles were evaluated in this study. The most relevant risk factors for the development of oral mucositis were the type of tumour and the chemotherapeutic agent. Low body weight, haematological, hepatic, renal parameters and poor oral hygiene were also relevant factors. High levels of creatine, ALT and AST, multivitamins and high levels of total and indirect bilirubin were factors mentioned, although in a less significant number of articles. Conclusion: The type of tumour and the chemotherapy modality are risk factors for OM, however, further studies are required in this field to establish robust evidence and guide the management of oral mucositis.
- The effects of written versus QR code wine nutrition labels on consumer preferencesPublication . Castro, Hioranna Daniela Arancibia; Elmashhara, Maher Georges; Silva, Susana Cristina Lima da Costa eRecent regulations regarding alcoholic beverages have caused producers to alter the labels of their products to include nutritional information. Moreover, for the first time, QR codes containing this information in wine labels (e-labels) are used. This research aims to investigate consumer’s perception towards wine back labels regarding the different formats in which the nutritional information can be provided. To assess the proposed model, a series of independent-sample t-tests, and a Hayer PROCESS Model 7 were conducted to first: evaluate label attractiveness, brand personality, cognitive and design clarity attitude, and satisfaction towards three label designs; original label, nutritional label, and e-label, second, to examine the moderating effect of consumer’s health-consciousness. The findings indicate that nutritional labelling is generally preferred by consumers. However, e-labels are perceived as having a superior design. When considering consumer health awareness, the results indicate that the perception of labels on satisfaction via attractiveness is moderated by health consciousness. Specifically, high levels of health consciousness led to a significant effect of labelling on satisfaction via attractiveness. The managerial objective of this study is to offer recommendations on effectively designing wine labels targeted at consumers.
- Impact of tone in firm's market performance : a study on the UK FTSE-350 firmsPublication . Oliveira, Ana Barbosa; Alves, Paulo Alexandre PimentaThe aim of this dissertation is to investigate if there is a boost in information when investors analyze the narrative part of annual reports, which mostly include qualitative data. This study tries to determine whether such analysis helps to bridge the gap between numerical financial statements and the actual corporate performance. By delving further into the qualitative parts of these reports, investors hope to acquire deeper insights into the firm’s financials. Additionally, this dissertation also investigates which message has the most relevant information about the future of the company, the Chief Executive Officer, or the Chairman, and if this information has impact on investors decisions. This investigation will oppose two theories: Agency Theory and Stewardship Theory. To accomplish these purposes, textual analysis was used to measure the tone of UK annual reports narratives insert in the Financial Times Stock Exchange 350 Index, contemplating a sample of 2,598 firm-year observations spanning the period from 2013 to 2023. Findings are related to both the tone of the Chairman's and CEO's reports help to explain the company's future performance. However, contrary to expectations following Agency Theory, when both variables were included in the same model, findings suggest that the predictive power of the CEO is higher than the predictive power of Chairman. The current study contributes to financial reporting literature by providing evidence from the UK that both CEO and Chairman disclosures lead to disclosure benefits due to increased information provided to investors and other stakeholders, which helps to mitigate the gap between numerical financial statements and the actual corporate performance.
