- From river to runway : how small-scale suppliers drive sustainable innovation in global fashion : the case of Pirarucu leatherPublication . Stapper, Franziska; Costa, Ricardo SarmentoThis thesis examines the role of small-scale suppliers in driving sustainable innovation within the global fashion industry, focusing on the specific case of Pirarucu leather. Through the use of theoretical frameworks like Sustainable Supply Chain Management and Stakeholder Theory, this research investigates how these actors contribute uniquely to sustainable practices and outlines the necessary arrangements needed for their success. Through five semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in the Pirarucu leather supply chain, a qualitative content analysis using Gioia’s methodology was conducted. The findings confirm and extend current literature by highlighting six main success factors for integrating sustainable innovation across global supply chains: Close and transparent relationships, extensive networks, unique product offerings, open dialogue, partnerships with local initiatives and sustainable practices throughout the whole production process. However, the research also identifies several key challenges for small-scale suppliers, including high costs, certification difficulties and the difficulty to meet industry standards. Finally, the findings emphasize the intrinsic motivation and innovative spirit of small-scale suppliers, which enables them to drive sustainable practices throughout the entire supply chain. For sustainable innovation to thrive, a collaborative effort among all supply chain stakeholders is essential. Distributors, retailers, brands and designers have to act as facilitators, supporting small-scale suppliers in overcoming challenges and promoting sustainable innovations to raise consumer awareness and adoption. This research provides a groundwork for future research and managerial strategies aimed at enhancing their contributions to global sustainability.
- NanoLC-MS/MS sequencing and in silico analysis of bioactive peptides from Lusitanian toadfish halobatrachus didactylus body mucusPublication . Cunha, Marta Fernandez; Coscueta, Ezequiel R.; Brassesco, María Emilia; Almada, Frederico; Gonçalves, David; Pintado, ManuelaThe mucus covering a fish's body works as a protective barrier and contains molecules, such as antimicrobial peptides, that defend against pathogens. In this study, two adult Halobatrachus didactylus were captured from the wild in Sesimbra, and mucus was collected by scraping the dorsal-lateral body with a sponge. Our objective was to identify new bioactive peptides in mucus samples via chromatography. SE-HPLC revealed a prominent peak at 775 Dalton. The mucus samples were pooled, fractionated, and analyzed by nanoLC-MS/MS. Database identification was unreliable, so de novo sequencing with PEAKS Studio was used, resulting in five peptides selected for their predicted bioactivities.
- Understanding customer preferences in healthcare : a conjoint analysis of private German health care add-onsPublication . Ashtiani, Dariosh Andrea Abidi; Caldieraro, FabioPurpose - The insurance market is highly competitive, with insurers developing into a reliable partner for customers. Individualized and group-specific service catalogs are designed for this purpose. This work examines which add-ons are beneficial for which customer group. Design/Methodology - The study uses literature reviews and current trends to identify relevant add-ons for customer groups. A survey collects customer preference data to assign relative benefits of the add-ons to specific customer groups by using conjoint analysis and k-means clustering. Findings - The study shows that all selected add-ons do maximize benefits for some of the customer groups. However, this differs from one customer group to another and there is no single preferred add-on for all groups. Research limitations - The main limitation of this research is that conjoint analysis results cannot directly translate into consumer behavior. Additionally, survey data collection lacks precision, as add-ons and complex health insurance products cannot be detailed sufficiently. Practical implications - Health insurance companies can use this analysis to address customer groups in a more targeted manner. Social implications - Insurance companies can use the results to help target groups lead healthier lives with selected add-ons. Originality - To my knowledge, it is the only study that is focused on innovative add-ons in health care plans.
- The influence of AI tools on decision-making processes : a study of cognitive automationPublication . Bilger, Carlotta; Almeida, Filipa deArtificial intelligence (AI) is a developing technology that is increasingly being used to facilitate and optimize decision-making. This thesis therefore examines the influence of AI on human decision-making processes. The main focus lies on the question of whether the availability of AI leads to more intuitive decision making. The study shows that people tend to give more intuitive answers when AI is used as a decision making aid. This is even the case when AI makes incorrect recommendations. Furthermore, AI recommendations are more likely to lead to intuitive responses than human recommendations, indicating greater confidence in AI's reliability. This work also investigated the role of motivation to engage in deep thinking and trust in AI as mediating and moderating factors in this process, respectively. Furthermore, the availability of AI did not reduce the motivation and trust in AI had no moderating effect on the relationship between usage of AI and decision making style. These findings contribute to the debate on the impact of AI on decision-making. AI has the potential to improve the efficiency of decision-making, but there exists the risk to rely on intuition rather than to rationally scrutinize the outcomes generated by AI. Therefore, a balanced integration of AI is required that avoids over-reliance and promotes AI's capabilities to improve decision making.

- Between autonomy and control : successors’ decision-making in family businessesPublication . Fries, Carolin; Mendonça, CristinaConsidering the significant economic contribution of family businesses worldwide, improving the success rate of business succession is crucial. This research focuses on the topic of successors’ decision-making in family businesses. The objective is to identify influences on these decisions and the outcomes of both autonomous and externally influenced decisions. Based on qualitative research, 12 interviews with successors from various family businesses were conducted. Findings reveal that successors perceive a combination of external and internal factors influencing their decision-making and outcomes. Autonomous decisions are perceived as fast, empowering and innovation-enhancing, but may lack the benefit of different perspectives and the distribution of responsibility. Conversely, decisions that are influenced by predecessors are perceived as slower, more stalled, and more frustrating, however, might profit from shared responsibility and enrichment from different perspectives. Applying the model of paradox of autonomy and control, this research illustrates the importance of resolving this paradox for the success of family businesses. Effective management of this issue requires fostering good relationships, maintaining open communication and ensuring equal treatment of successors. A balance between the successors' autonomy and the consideration of the predecessors' knowledge is perceived to be the ideal approach. These practices support successors in their role and promote business continuity, while creating a balance between the expertise of predecessors and the necessary autonomy for successors to innovate and lead effectively.
- Acceptance of artificial intelligence in the workplace : the influence of employees fixed or growth mindset on AI acceptancePublication . Böcher, Leonie Merle; Almeida, Filipa deArtificial Intelligence (AI) has already changed the way humans interact with the world and continues to even transform the world of work. To effectively implement human-machine collaboration and leverage the potential benefits of AI tools, employees must accept the AI tools they interact within their organizations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine whether an employee's mindset, either fixed or growth-oriented, influences their acceptance of AI in the workplace. Moreover, the study aims to examine the effect of employee's attitudes towards change and their technology familiarity on AI acceptance. In order to identify the interactions between the variables, a quantitative research method in the form of a survey was conducted. The comprehensive analysis of the collected data has shown that an employee's mindset marginally significantly influences their acceptance of AI technology in the workplace. The results further indicated that there is a significant negative effect of employee's attitudes toward change and a significant positive effect of their technology familiarity on the acceptance of AI, with greater technology familiarity associated with increased acceptance. This dissertation intends to contribute to the increasing literature in the areas of mindset and acceptance of AI, as well as to provide valuable implications for organizations considering the implementation of AI technologies.
