- Developing a loyalty program for Pétis to attract new customersPublication . Kloiber, Nicole; Xavier, RuteThis master's thesis aimed to propose a loyalty program for the Portuguese pet supplier Pétis with a focus on successfully attracting new customers. By examining existing literature analyzing loyalty programs and conducting a survey this thesis identifies key factors that influence customer loyalty and proposes a strategic framework for Pétis. The literature emphasizes the significance of connection, personalized experiences, and integrating technology in loyalty programs. The study of programs at Fressnapf, Pets At Home, Kiwoko, and Starbucks demonstrates practices in tailored rewards, digital platforms, and community involvement. The feedback from 131 participants, primarily pet owners, highlights the importance of communication, an easy reward redemption process, and data privacy. Furthermore, cluster analysis reveals five factors: Service Quality, Digital Engagement, Exclusive Diversity, Communication Clarity, and Reward Accessibility. Whereas the segment "Quality Focused All Rounders" emerges as the target audience for Pétis. The recommended strategy suggests personalized rewards, a simple user interface, community engagement, and stringent data protection measures to improve customer satisfaction, encourage repeat purchases, and build long-lasting customer loyalty. This thesis establishes the groundwork for Pétis to develop a loyalty program that meets customer expectations and follows industry standards ultimately setting Pétis up for long-term success, in the evolving pet care market.
- Core components of cardiac rehabilitation for people undergoing cardiac surgery: scoping reviewPublication . Barbosa, Pedro José Moreira; Ribeiro, Catarina; Vieira, Margarida; Machado, Paulo PugaIntroduction: Currently, the number of heart surgeries has increased, being an end-of-line option when medical treatment fails to respond to individuals’ problems, aiming to repair the dysfunction of the heart’s mechanical functioning. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a multidimensional intervention that includes education and the modification of cardiovascular risk factors in order to improve individuals’ quality of life. As a central component of CR programs, physical exercise is a strategy that promotes improved physical performance, as well as reduced symptoms associated with the disease and surgery. For these reasons, given the implications resulting from the pathological and surgical processes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, it is necessary to define, implement and evaluate interventions that make it possible to minimize the functional impact on individuals affected by these conditions. Purpose: To map and analyze phase II CR programs that include individuals undergoing classic cardiac surgery, with a focus on physical exercise components. Methodology: Scoping Review (ScR) based on the principles advocated by the Joanna Briggs Institute®. Two independent reviewers analyzed the relevance of the articles and extracted and synthesized the data. Eligibility criteria were defined as studies of any level of evidence, which clearly described the intervention performed in phase II of CR and whose target population included individuals undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting and heart valve surgery. An unlimited search was carried out in the EBSCOHost, Web of Science, Scopus and gray literature data sources. Results: 28 publications were included in this review. The intervention varies between 3 weeks and 12 months, with daily training sessions 2-5 times a week, lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. The intensity and type of exercise prescribed were areas with a wide dispersion, with the majority of studies favoring anaerobic training, of low to moderate intensity. Discussion: Most programs are evaluated at the beginning, middle and end of the program, using scales to measure quality of life, cardiorespiratory capacity and functionality. The characteristics of the intervention, its duration and the evaluation instruments differ between the studies. Conclusion: Further research should be carried out in order to ascertain the range of criteria for the frequency, intensity, type and duration of physical exercise to be implemented in people undergoing cardiac surgery in phase II of CR. Mapping the interventions that could be used in phase II CR programs could help to determine the main components to be considered in intervention programs, for informed rehabilitation nursing decision-making, as well as identifying priority areas for research.
- Gulbenkian música : digital transformation in classical musicPublication . Vieira, André Mourão Tovar; Guedes, NunoThis Dissertation examines the strategic transformation of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Music Department, focusing on its shift from traditional marketing methods to a comprehensive digital marketing strategy. Under the leadership of Chief Marketing Officer Nuno Prego, the Foundation successfully navigated the challenges of low occupancy rates, declining revenues, and an aging audience by embracing digital transformation and innovative programming. Key initiatives included the creation of a unified digital presence, active engagement on social media platforms, and the use of data analytics to inform marketing strategies. The case also explores the introduction of new concert formats designed to attract younger audiences and the appointment of a charismatic young conductor, Lorenzo Viotti, which significantly boosted audience engagement. Additionally, the case highlights the impact of digital tools such as live streaming in extending the reach of classical music performances globally. The success of these strategies underscores the importance of adaptability, audience diversification, and the integration of new technologies in maintaining the relevance and financial sustainability of cultural institutions. Including a Literature Review on relevant topics and a Teaching Note to assist instructors in preparing the in-class Case discussion, this Case Study serves as a valuable resource for students and professionals in arts management, strategic marketing, and non-profit management, offering insights into the effective management and modernization of cultural organizations.
- To split or not to split : a business strategy case study on EY’s proposed break up under Project EverestPublication . Behrens, Linus; Guedes, NunoThe thesis develops and analyzes a Case Study on Ernst & Young's global leadership's proposition of splitting its audit and consulting divisions to seize new growth opportunities under Project Everest. The case's central issue concerns a well-performing firm reviewing its strategic and organizational dimensions to address uncertainty in external factors and unlock growth potential by separating its businesses. The primary consideration in the strategic decision is whether the benefits of separating businesses outweigh the risks of the separation and if sufficient managerial alignment can be created to execute the split. The analysis concludes various internal and external factors that make a separation feasible and exemplifies the changes in internal capabilities and competitive forces for separated businesses. It uncovers a highly competitive environment that exposes the firm to risks despite its stable historic performance. A Literature Review on topics related to the main issues raised by the Case Study, and a Teaching note offered to help instructors using the Case Study for in-class discussion show that in addition to competitive forces, managers' individual incentives are decisive in strategy development and bias their strategic evaluation.
- Inclusive education in Portugal: exploring sentiments, concerns and attitudes of teachersPublication . Carvalho, Marisa; Simó-Pinatella, David; Azevedo, Helena; Alcocer, Ana Luisa AdamThis study examines Portuguese teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education and how teachers' self-efficacy towards inclusion and other sociodemographic and professional variables relate and predict teachers' attitudes. In total, 539 Portuguese teachers participated. Sentiments, Attitudes and Concerns about Inclusive Education scale, Teacher Efficacy for Inclusive Practices scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire were used to collect data. The results indicate that teachers' attitudes towards inclusion were generally positive. However, teachersrelated variables (e.g., teachers' self-efficacy, teaching experience, previous training, and knowledge about educational laws and policies) influence teachers' attitudes in a complex and dynamic way. Implications for policies, practices and research are presented.
- Production of aroma-rich extracts from sardine cooking wastewaters: exploring their potential for modulating feed intake in European seabassPublication . Resende, Daniela; Pereira, Maria J.; Sá, Tiago; Brazinha, Carla; Pintado, Manuela; Valente, Luisa M. P.; Velasco, CristinaManaging the canning industry’s nutrient-rich and odorous liquid waste is a hurdle. Concurrently, the growing use of vegetable ingredients in aquafeeds diminishes palatability and feed consumption in carnivorous fish. Thus, we hypothesized that aromas could be extracted from cooking wastewaters at canning factories and added to plant-based diets to stimulate intake in European seabass. Sardine cooking wastewaters were collected and tested directly (CW-A) or after vacuum distillation (VD-A) or liquid/liquid extraction with soybean oil (LLE-A). Despite losses in aldehydes and short-chain alcohols, both processes were effective in removing off-flavours. VD-A displayed a higher concentration of most aromas compared to LLE-A. Extracts were included at 2 μg g−1 of 1-penten-3-ol, the most abundant compound in all extracts, in diets (CW, VD, LLE). A non-supplemented diet was used as control. Each diet was assigned to six groups of juvenile fish, fed a single meal until apparent satiation. Our emphasis was on this initial feeding to comprehend the hedonic control of feed intake, minimizing habituation effects and the impact of the long-term metabolic requirements. Feed intake was highest for the control group. No differences on plasma metabolites were observed, suggesting feed intake was primarily regulated by hedonic rather than homeostatic mechanisms. Moreover, the lower intake in the supplemented diets was partially associated with a lower expression of orexigenic (intake-promoting) neuropeptides and higher expression of anorexigenic (intake-reducing) neuropeptides in the brain, despite the lack of significant diet-related differences. Overall, this study presents a novel approach to valorise cooking wastewater from the canning industry, since cooking wastewaters extracts rich in aromas were successfully produced, however, in the tested concentration, had no positive impact on the short-term feed intake response of European seabass.
