Burnay, Catarina Duff; Félix, João; Tavares, PatríciaThis study on the Condition of Women in the Film and Audiovisual Sectors in Portugal was promoted by MUTIM – Mulheres Trabalhadoras das Imagens em Movimento, an association founded in 2022, whose mission is precisely to think about and leverage the presence of women in cinema and audiovisual in Portugal, promoting parity and equitable representation, and by XX Element Project-Associação Cultural, a cultural association founded in 2016 that seeks to be an agent of intervention in the fight to promote equity, respect and inclusion of all people, through the development of artistic projects. In order to listen to the feelings and experiences of the women involved professionally in these sectors, the two associations created an online survey questionnaire and distributed it to workers in these fields without any gender bias. In a second phase, in-depth interviews were carried out with ten female professionals, as a way of identifying/specifying particular situations and complementing the information found in the survey. Simultaneously, the associations analysed three grants awarded by ICA: New Talents and First Works; Support for Cinema; and Support for Audiovisual and Multimedia. They also mapped the gender of professionals holding managerial positions in public bodies that support the cinema and audiovisual sectors, as well as in the most relevant management bodies and boards of the three main audiovisual media groups in Portugal.

- Between love stories and activism : pathos, storytelling, and connection in the communication of Taylor Swift on Instagram and through musicPublication . Neumann, Clara Elly; Tavares , Patrícia Isabel Ramos Pego NunesA glamorous superstar who is taking the world by storm and an ancient Greek scholar. These are not necessarily two people which one would bring together. And yet this is exactly what this dissertation does. The ancient Greek scholar Aristotle and his rhetoric are looked at from a modern way through the glittering and sparkling lens of Taylor Swift. The dissertation uses a qualitative research design with a content analysis as well as semi-structured interviews to understand the communication strategy of artist Taylor Swift. The research focuses on the concept of storytelling in connection with an emotional communication approach related to the pathos theory of Greek scholar Aristotle. It assesses how Swift uses pathos in storytelling to create an emotional connection with her fans. The dissertation considers the impact of the music of artist Taylor Swift and looks at Instagram to understand the communication strategy connected to social media. Understanding the connection which Swift built with the help of her music and social media interaction. The interviews and the content analysis underline how successful Swift manages to interact with her fans and how emotional her communication strategy is. It shows how promoting engagement is one of her main ways of creating a successful, emotion-based communication strategy. The dissertation also looks at the activism which can be found in Swift’s communication and how it has become part of her recent music as well as her Instagram appearance.
- Bridging the gap: environmental health literacy as key to adolescent well-being and sustainable behaviorsPublication . Matos, Margarida Gaspar de; Branquinho, Cátia; Domingos, Leonor; Guedes, Fabio Botelho; Cerqueira, Ana; Gaspar, TaniaAdolescents who possess environmental health literacy are more equipped to handle the effects of the environment on their health. This study uses data from Portugal’s 2022 HBSC survey to investigate the environmental health literacy (EHL) of teenagers. The Environmental Health Literacy Scale (EHLS) was verified by confirmatory component analysis. Within the framework of an ecosystem, this study investigates factors related to health and well-being. There are 7355 adolescents in the sample. EHLS_Social Norms and participation in volunteering activities were found to be significant predictors of EHL_Knowledge, which explained 25.2% of the variance in the final model. EHLS_Social Norms and EHLS_Knowledge accounted for 42.9% of the variance in EHL_Behaviors, while school grade was adversely connected with pro-environmental behavior. While actions and knowledge were major positive predictors, gender and school grades showed negative relationships, and EHL_Social Norms accounted for 46% of the variance. This study establishes a valid measure of environmental health literacy in adolescents, informing science education strategies and public health interventions.
- Care: new challenges arising from transnational dynamicsPublication . Guerra, Inês; Barros, CarlosCare and support are central determinants of social work. However, the needs and specificities for an integral perception of this assistance need to be drawn in the context of a globalizing society and increasingly evident macro and micro contextual phenomena. By taking care of aging people in the context of Portuguese transnational families as an example, this paper aims to be a space of dialogue between challenges and possible answers in an attempt to reflect on the main issues of care in transnational families. The main results/reflections emphasize the need to broaden educational training to recognize care as inherently interdisciplinary and rooted in cross-cultural knowledge. Digital communication technologies play a crucial role in enabling care that transcends geographical boundaries, improving both the quality of interactions with care-related elements and social responses.
- Challenges in doctoral supervisionPublication . Hanenberg, PeterThe supervision and guidance of doctoral candidates have often followed an inconsistent path, frequently due to a lack of clear criteria from supervisors. There is also some misunderstanding regarding the role of the supervisor/tutor, although significant differences are observed in the approaches across different scientific fields. This topic needs further reflection. The paper considers the quality of supervision and progress monitoring in doctoral education paths.
- Code-Dependency : Tiktok's AI & suggested content feed. Users circumstances to go outside of their filter bubblesPublication . Tiraborelli, Alice; Tavares, Patrícia Isabel Ramos Pego NunesThis dissertation's main objective is to understand users' perceived usage of TikTok's algorithm, particularly focusing on their reasons for exploring content beyond the platform's suggested feed. This exploratory study aims to look into user search behavior concerning algorithmic recommendations. To gain a comprehensive understanding, the theoretical framework addresses three key areas: the concept of "Platform Society," the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms in social media, and the phenomenon of "Algorithmic Sovereignty." With this theoretical approach, this research addresses user interactions on TikTok by examining how users navigate and engage with the platform's algorithmically curated content, versus actively searching for content independently. Through a detailed examination of TikTok's algorithm, user behavior, and engagement strategies, the study provides insights into the interplay between user agency and algorithmic control. Findings indicate that TikTok's algorithm significantly influences user behavior by personalizing content feeds based on user interactions, preferences, and engagement patterns. The study reveals that while many users rely heavily on algorithmically suggested content, some actively seek diverse content, demonstrating varying degrees of algorithmic awareness. The algorithm's influence is most evident in shaping user engagement and interaction patterns, guiding content discovery, and reinforcing specific content preferences. Moreover, the study identifies a complex relationship between user agency and algorithmic influence, highlighting the need for greater transparency and user awareness in navigating algorithmically mediated environments. The implications of these findings extend to understanding digital behavior on social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of balancing algorithmic personalization with user autonomy. Ultimately, this dissertation contributes to the broader discourse on the societal impact of AI and algorithms, advocating for strategies that enhance user empowerment in the digital age.
