- Power of corporate purpose : its impact on engagement and turnover intention, and amplified by person-organization fitPublication . Uhrlau, Lucie Marie; Cruz, Nuno Moreira daIn recent decades the interest from both academia and business in the concept of corporate purpose rose drastically, due to its various benefits to multiple stakeholder groups, the company, and the environment. A compelling corporate purpose can not only improve Employee satisfaction, commitment, and retention but also improve profitability and offer new strategic objectives. Due to its popularity and impact various companies try to find their purpose. However, the influence of employee perception on corporate purpose remains less explored. This dissertation examines how employees’ perception of the company’s purpose affects their engagement and turnover intentions. Furthermore, it explores the role of value congruence, specifically through person-organization fit, in moderating these effects. A methodological approach combining an online survey with 293 participants, with five semi-structured interviews, was used to investigate these relationships. The results demonstrate significant relationships between the perception of purpose and their engagement and turnover intentions. Additionally, an interaction effect between perceived purpose and Person-organization fit was identified, especially on turnover intention. The interviews gave a broader perspective on the perception of purpose, such as the importance of communication, or awareness. These findings highlight the importance of a clear corporate purpose in enhancing employee engagement and retention. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of its limitations and proposes avenues for future research.
- Supply chain : sustainability under scrutiny and the role of CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive)Publication . Karabeg, Lena Ilse Nera; Cruz, Nuno Moreira daChild labor, climate change, and deforestation are pressing issues rooted in supply chains. In response, the EU introduced the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) to nudge firms toward behavioral change. This research explores how different firms respond to the CSRD and examines the motivations behind adopting sustainable supply chain approaches. The study identifies common themes and differences across SMEs, MNEs, and consultancies through a literature review and semi-structured interviews with experts. It highlights opportunities and challenges the CSRD presents, such as enhanced transparency and accountability versus content complexity and resource constraints related to double materiality assessment and boundary-setting. While all participants acknowledged the importance of sustainability, a gap linking firm sustainability to their supply chains was identified. Results show firms stating compliance as the main driver for sustainability, acknowledging that meeting the basic requirement will not lead to a long-term competitive advantage. Despite mixed feelings, there is optimism about the CSRD's potential to drive change. Research recommends a mixed approach through regulatory enforcement with incentives and support, emphasizing timely adaptation, data management, and proactive engagement. The study found that MNEs often influence SMEs by cascading sustainability practices down their supply chains. However, SMEs face significant resource challenges, potentially leading to unfair competition. This thesis also highlights areas for future research, including the role of AI and technology. The topic will undoubtedly attract researchers' attention in the future as companies comply with the CSRD, and mandatory reports provide deeper insights into the impact on sustainable supply chains.

- Equity valuation of Lufthansa AG : is Lufthansa trading at a fair value?Publication . Rosenbaum, Maxmilian Benjamin J.; Brunella, BrunaThe purpose of this thesis is determining a target price for the shares of Lufthansa AG, a German airliner, and subsequently to provide an investment recommendation, based on the current stock price and the target price. The stock has performed well since the recovery of the Corona crisis, reaching a share price of EUR 10.57 in March 2023, and thereby approaching the pre-pandemic era stock price. This raises the question whether the stock is trading at a fair value, given the current economic environment. The valuation methods presented are, the discounted cash-flow method, comparable company analysis, and precedent transaction analysis. Three alternative scenarios: an upside, downside and base case, were constructed within the DCF. The model has established assumptions for each scenario that best reflect the current economic and geopolitical situation, taking into account relevant factors such as: volatile oil and gas prices, persistent inflation, tight labor markets and environmental regulations. The resulting investment recommendation is identified as a Strong Buy, with a target price of EUR 14.22, representing a substantial premium of 77% in comparison to the stock price observed on December 27th, which stood at EUR 8.01.
- The role of the teacher: function, missions and timeless purposesPublication . Morgado, Elsa Maria Gabriel; Licursi, Maria Beatriz; Silva, Levi Leonido Fernandes daObjective: The aim of this study is to reflect on the profile and challenges of the teaching profession in a technologically and humanly challenging educational context, with the aim of understanding the relevance and status of the teaching career, as well as assessing and contextualizing the appeal and social commitment of this profession. Theoretical Framework: We brought together leading theorists, methodologists, pedagogues and thinkers related to the world of education and pedagogy, with special emphasis on Portuguese-Brazilian, European and Spanish-American authors. Method: Narrative literature review, seeking to describe or discuss the current state of the research topic. Results and Discussion: The relational triad between the function, the missions and the designs of the teaching function throughout the ages, whose conceptual-reflexive intersection embraces, exposes difficulties and, essentially, points to paths to be trodden in the future by those who (still) respond to the call to embrace a sick career. Implications of the research: In the future, there are certain considerations that can be reflected on and improved, based on the structure and conceptual basis emanating from the reference authors (and works) that deal with the subject under debate and reflection. Originality/Value: This review uniquely promotes reflection on the past (more or less recent) and the present and, above all, identifies some issues to be worked on for the future in this context and in the face of the real and current challenges of the teaching profession, in a socio-economic and socio-political context that is constantly changing, which is largely based on the assumption of the conjectural function of technical-technological conciliation with the interaction and social responsibility of the teacher towards society.
- Strategic integration of metaverse technologies in healthcare : enhancing patient experience and operational efficiencyPublication . Wolko, Nils Ravin; Martins, HenriqueThis thesis investigates the strategic incorporation of metaverse technologies in healthcare, specifically emphasizing their capacity to improve patient satisfaction and operational effectiveness. The study evaluates the utilization of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), digital twins, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare industry. These technologies possess the capacity to transform patient involvement, offer immersive education, and enhance remote monitoring and telemedicine services. Nevertheless, the implementation of their ideas is impeded by notable obstacles, such as technological constraints, exorbitant expenses, and regulatory and ethical considerations. To assess the strategic capabilities of these technologies and the main barriers to their implementation, the study conducted qualitative interviews with experts. To address these challenges, it is necessary to implement comprehensive training programs, establish strong data protection measures, and make strategic financial investments. The study's findings indicate that the seamless incorporation of Metaverse technologies can result in healthcare services that are tailored to individual needs, streamlined, and highly productive, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and contentment. The research provides valuable insights for healthcare organizations, policymakers, and technology providers in effectively incorporating these advanced digital tools into the healthcare system.

The study adds to the body of knowledge on RPA adoption and provides insightful information for businesses contemplating or implementing automation projects.
- Exploring the impact of organizational purpose in attracting talents to startupsPublication . Ebert, Lara Cennet; Cruz, Nuno Moreira daIn today's competitive business environment, attracting top talents is a critical challenge, especially for startups. Although existing literature highlights an increasing preference for intrinsic motivators among individuals and a growing debate about purpose, the impact of a well-defined purpose on attracting talents to startups remains underexplored. This study tries to fill this gap by investigating the effect of a well-defined purpose on talent attraction within startups. Using a quantitative research approach, the study surveys 203 Gen Z and Millennial participants, including current and potential startup employees. The analysis reveals that talents are attracted to startups with a well-defined purpose. Specifically, women and Gen Z individuals are significantly more attracted to startups with a well-defined purpose than men and Millennials. Furthermore, the findings suggest that talents who perceive a strong alignment between their personal purpose and the organization’s purpose are willing to accept a lower wage in order to be intrinsically motivated and engaged. The study contributes by highlighting the important role of having and communicating a clear organizational purpose in attracting diverse talents. Gender and generational differences significantly influence how talents perceive and prioritize the organization’s purpose. Startups can not only improve their financial resources but also foster a purpose-driven culture by focusing on purpose alignment in the hiring process. This study addresses the research gap on the impact of purpose in startups and provides valuable guidance for startups to attract and retain top talents in a highly competitive market.
- Analyzing the significance of AI in digital marketing teams : a case study on Gocomo and the AI assistant AlfredPublication . Ivankovic, Antonela; Bohnsack, René; Marante, Cláudia AntunesThis thesis investigates the phenomenon of AI in digital marketing, and how it can address challenges, such as enhancing creativity. This was researched by analyzing how Human-AI collaboration is managed, describing a clear distribution of human and AI capabilities in creative processes, and lastly determining the impact of AI on business performance. The status quo was evaluated within a literature review, followed by a case study which was conducted on a specific company offering an AI assistant called alfred: gocomo. The results of this case study including qualitative expert interviews and archival records are that implementing tools such as alfred significantly boosts efficiency, by handling quantitative data tasks. During creative processes, AI is used to augment initial brainstorming, inspiration, and final refinement stages, thus enhancing creativity to a certain degree. Hereby human oversight remains essential, reflected in required subjectivity, personal taste, gut feeling, and emotional connections. Following a gradual implementation process of AI, digital marketing teams can address AI knowledge gaps. The main challenges identified include trust, legal and ethical challenges and can be overcome by taking on a proactive approach in managing transparency and compliance. Success of AI can be measured using traditional KPIs, while considering introducing a new KPI for AI9s usefulness from a human perspective. Soft KPIs such as customer interaction and employee satisfaction are highlighted to fully capture AI9s impact on businesses. The thesis concludes with proposals concerning the implementation of AI in tool providing companies such as gocomo, and their respective digital marketing teams.
