- Maximizing benefits : the redesign of MYTERIAL's supplier routing algorithmPublication . Kleinevoss, Julian; Xavier, RuteTo ensure a better customer experience, the construction tech startup MYTERIAL is facing a series of internal changes. One of the changes foresees the redesign of the currently used supplier routing algorithm (SRA). However, to elaborate this, MYTERIAL cannot rely on internal specifications only, but must also include use cases from external construction companies. Based on different perspectives of several management methods, this study discusses various possibilities of redesigning the currently used SRA. Hence, semi-structured user interviews as well as expert interviews were conducted to detect current challenges and to determine external use cases and missing features. Resulting from this, eligible features were built into two scenarios, showing how the future SRA could look like. In a follow-up discussion, the advantages and disadvantages of both scenarios were contrasted. It was determined that construction companies can benefit from a realigned SRA in several aspects. This can be accomplished by involving the customer himself more in the design of his own, individual SRA.

- The more the merrier : the effect of information overload on consumers’ perceptions of cosmetics productsPublication . Moreira, Joana Teves de Sousa; Moreira, Sérgio PauloThe increasing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly products has led consumers to seek out green options in the cosmetics industry. However, navigating through the abundance of information and marketing tactics can be overwhelming, resulting in potential greenwashing practices. This study aims to investigate the impact of information overload on consumers' susceptibility to falling into greenwashing in the cosmetics industry. User-generated content (UGC), such as product reviews, is a valuable source of information for consumers. However, the abundance of UGC online can contribute to information overload, making it challenging for consumers to make informed choices. Eco-labels also play a role in consumer decision – making but can be misleading when self-generated by companies. Information overload negatively impacts decision-making and can increase susceptibility to greenwashing practices. To test the hypothesis that information overload affects consumers' likelihood of believing the companies’ greenwashing, a quantitative study was conducted. An online survey was distributed, presenting participants with different face cleansing product scenarios. Sociodemographic questions were followed by questions assessing their willingness to pay, attitudes, and sustainability perceptions.
- Investment performance of a concentrated factor-based strategyPublication . Koninckx, François Pierre; Barroso, PedroI discuss the possibility to create an effective concentrated portfolio. The research starts with the observation that retail investors often fail to diversify their portfolios as much as advocated by traditional portfolio theory. Building on this observation, I create a factor-based concentrated trading strategy, to give a straightforward and relatively easy way to invest for retail investors. The strategy uses value, quality and beta as signals to construct monthly portfolios. Over the tested sample, the concentrated portfolio produces a significant alpha that is robust to the CAPM, and the Fama-French 3-Factor and 5-Factor models. Three portfolios are constructed, one long only, one long-short, and a naïve 1/N portfolio. The naïve portfolio is used as a benchmark of excess returns.
- Study of the application of ultraviolet radiation technology in water treatment processesPublication . Camelo, Verónica Filipa da Rocha; Moreira, Ivone Cristina Vaz; Magalhães, Adriano José Pereira de; Rodrigues, Célia Maria ManaiaThis study investigated the effects of different treatment methods for producing drinking water on various parameters, including the survival of an opportunistic pathogenic bacteria. The work included two approaches: monitoring data analysis obtained along the treatment line, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation, provided by the company Águas do Norte, and experimental assays to evaluate the effect of UV radiation on the removal of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and some genes related with antibiotic resistance. Microbiological, chemical, and physical characteristics of raw, filtered, treated with chlorine, and treated with chlorine/UV water were compared based on statistical analysis. This evaluation showed that the treatment is particularly effective in the removal of microorganisms and turbidity. The additional treatment with UV radiation, compared to chlorine treatment, did not show significant differences in the improvement of most of the analyzed parameters. The survival of two strains of K. pneumoniae of clinical (KP2-448) and environmental (SM1) origin was studied at the laboratory scale. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to evaluate the variation of antibiotic resistance genes (blaKPC, blaOXA-1, and sul1), and others related (intl1, qacED1). The results showed varied responses regarding UV-C exposure and subsequent recovery. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation survival assays reinforced its impact on the persistence and bacterial viability. The analysis of the blaKPC/phoE ratio showed a tenfold increase in the relative abundance of the blaKPC gene in the clinical strain of K. pneumoniae after the regrowth phase. In both approaches, it was also done a search for 10 antibiotic resistance biomarkers, that were most of them absent, with exception of the intl1, qacED1 e sul1 genes. These collective insights offer a deeper understanding of antibiotic resistance dynamics and water treatment efficacy, guiding future research directions for optimized strategies.
- What does it take to convince us? Analyzing the impact of corporate social responsibilities and brand personality on purchase intentionPublication . Reister, Anna; Moreira, Sérgio PauloThe following thesis will investigate the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives on consumer’s purchase intention (PI) regarding the different brand personalities. Awareness of CSR initiative topics has been increasing and its measurable effect has been questioned. It is a perquisite, that every company has a certain personality. Therefore, to determine the effectiveness of CSR initiatives for each brand personality was taken into consideration when analyzing the success of the CSR initiatives: philanthropy, sponsorship, and cause-related marketing (CRM). The three initiatives as well as one control initiative were each paired with all five brand personalities and then examined for the highest PI per brand personality. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted. Each participant saw only one stimulus per brand personality, with a total of twenty different scenarios. Furthermore, consumer engagement (CE) was tested in this context as a mediator between CSR initiatives per brand and PI. The results show that the CSR initiatives have a positive impact on the PI, with three out of five of the brand personalities being significant. The highest impact on PI of the CSR initiatives varies among the brand personalities. CE mediates the effect of brand personality CSR initiatives on PI. Managerial recommendations based on the results include the adoption of CSR initiatives to maximize PI and to confirm its efficacy. Nevertheless, to take the right initiative, a company must first find its brand personality to gain a competitive advantage.
- Digital disruption in the non-profit sector : an analysis of Virtual Reality technology's impact on the donation behaviour of private individualsPublication . Waldthausen, Florian von; Salvado, João CotterIn an increasingly digital world, non-profit organisations face the challenge of finding new ways to engage donors for the growing number of social projects. This study examines how Virtual Reality (VR), a new and innovative technology, can positively contribute to fundraising for social causes. To answer the research question: How and why does the use of Virtual Reality (VR) impact an individual's donation behaviour compared to traditional media?; The donation behaviour of students from Universidade Católica Portuguesa was examined in a lab experiment. The findings revealed that Virtual Reality significantly and positively influenced donation intention and behaviour. The heightened sense of empathy and social presence experienced through VR plays a crucial role in explaining the connection between VR and donation behaviour. Furthermore, Virtual Reality seems to be a powerful tool for enhancing donor engagement through volunteering and money contributions. Overall, this research sheds light on the effectiveness of VR technology in the fundraising efforts of social organizations. Embracing VR as an innovative approach can revolutionize the strategies employed by non-profit organizations, captivating donors in an increasingly digital landscape and driving support for social causes.

Deveci, Gülsüm; Çelik, Elif; Agagündüz, Duygu; Bartkiene, Elena; Rocha, João Miguel F.; Özogul, FatihFermented foods refer to beverages or foods made by carefully regulated microbial growth and the enzymatic conversion of dietary components. Fermented foods have recently become more popular. Studies on fermented foods suggest the types of bacteria and bioactive peptides involved in this process, revealing linkages that may have impacts on human health. By identifying the bacteria and bioactive peptides involved in this process, studies on fermented foods suggest relationships that may have impressions on human health. Fermented foods have been associated with obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. In this article, fermented dairy products, vegetables and fruits, legumes, meats, and grains are included. Two elements in particular are emphasized when discussing the fermentation of all of these foods: bioactive chemicals generated during fermentation and microorganisms involved during fermentation. Organic acids, bioactive peptides, conjugated linoleic acid, biogenic amines, isoflavones, phytoestrogens, and nattokinase are a few of the bioactive compounds included in this review. Also, certain bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, and Bacillus species, which are utilized in the fermentation process are mentioned. The effects of both substances including anti-fungal and antioxidant properties; the modulation of intestinal microbiota; anti-inflammatory, antidiabetes, anti-obesity, anticancer, and antihypertension properties; and the protection of cognitive function are explained in this review.
