- A European battery stronghold : potential acquisition of Akasol AG by Varta AGPublication . Grossmann, Niklas Leon; Assunção, António Borges deEuropean battery manufacturers and automotive companies have started to invest into lithiumion battery production with a strong delay to Asian competitors. Nonetheless, we expect global production capacity to shift towards Europe during the next decade, driven by high current investment rates as well as the benefit of proximity to Europe’s leading automotive manufacturers. While lithium-ion battery productions will be mostly driven by an increased demand for electronic vehicles, consumer electronics will also play an important role for lithium-ion battery market growth. This thesis models a potential acquisition of Akasol AG, a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for electronic vehicles, by Varta AG, a manufacturer of small-sized lithium-ion batteries for consumer electronics. The objective of this paper is to find out whether such an acquisition can provide viable synergies to the merged company and provide a recommendation on whether to proceed with this acquisition or not. Our analysis suggests that the merged company would be able to realize synergies amounting to a net present value of €392.9 million, driven by joint procurement efforts and joint research and development capex spending. We suggest a maximum share price premium of 30%, leading to a total purchase price of €1106.3m. This transaction shall be completed towards the third quarter of 2022 and shall be financed through the issuance of debt and equity.
- The effect of CSR engagement on financial distress risk in emerging markets : a cross-country analysis on the role of economic development and culturePublication . Opferkuch, Lukas; Reis, RicardoThis thesis investigates the impact of firm engagement in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on a company’s financial distress risk in emerging markets in South America, Asia & Europe. I use Thomson Reuters Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) – score as a proxy for CSR-performance, Gross National Product (GNP) per Capita as a proxy for economic development as well as three of Hofstede’s (1980) cultural dimensions to capture cultural differences to investigate the effect of ESG-performance using two financial distress prediction models: Altman’s Z-score and Ohlson’s O-score. By analyzing 8301 panel observations from 20 emerging markets countries, I find a significantly weaker effect of CSR-performance on financial distress risk in all emerging markets countries when compared to S&P 500 companies. Further, I find that economic development influences the relationship between economic development and financial distress risk. Lastly, Long-Term Orientation and Power Distance show moderating effects on the relationship between CSR-performance and financial distress risk, Individualism leverages it. My findings are robust to variation in time, industry, and region as well as reverse causality and endogeneity and jointly support Freeman’s (1984) hypothesis of the benefits of a strong firm-stakeholder relationship.

- How Philip Morris manages disruptive regulations and what other industries can learn from themPublication . van Buuren, Adrian; Reis, RicardoIn this thesis presented in a case study format, we will analyze what happened to Philip Morris and how they adapted their strategy in a disruptive regulatory environment. We will firstly dig into the history of what happened to Philip Morris when increased regulation put a halt to most marketing practices for all players in the tobacco industry and analyze their reactions and switches in strategy. We will then analyze other industries that are experiencing similar disruptions and assess what they can learn from what happened to PM. Methods used: We will analyze the tobacco industry through several interviews with industry experts to gain insider knowledge of how tobacco companies were dealing with such disruptions as well as analyzing closely the existing research. We will then do the same thing with the alcohol and food/drinks industry and see firstly how they overlap and what they can learn from PM. After analyzing closely the existing research and interviews it is safe to say that PM and other tobacco companies are masters in the art of managing disruptive change. They do so by investing heavily in lobbying, adapting constantly to new laws and find legal ways around such regulations and finally the active participation in reducing harm to smokers by heavy investments in reduced risk products. The alcohol and food/drinks industry are facing the same challenges today and can learn a lot from the strategies PM implemented to tackle disruptions.
- Drink your Peas : an empirical study of perceived factors affecting consumer behaviour on Pea-Based Milk in GermanyPublication . Janosch, Laura; Rita, Miguel FontesGlobal food production and consumption account for a large share of the overall greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, a move towards a more ecologically friendly consumption behaviour is required. There is substantial evidence of an upward tendency. This development is not only driven by vegetarians and vegans but mainly by flexitarians. This study focuses on a new development in the plant-based dairy market, namely pea-based milk. The objective of this thesis was to analyse the drivers and barriers of pea-based milk consumption and how consumer behaviour diverges across different diet types. Therefore, qualitative and quantitative data were gathered and analysed to gain knowledge about pea-based milk. The theoretical part elaborates the current market situation for pea-based milk alternatives and shows the consumption motives of plant-based milk that have been surveyed in other studies. In-depth interviews with nine customers from the target population are used to collect primary data. In addition, an online survey with 695 respondents was conducted to supplement consumer behaviour research. This dissertation suggests that most consumers had a favourable view on plant-based dairy replacements and intended to purchase them. The results show that taste, health, environmental responsibility, animal welfare, and social network impact consumer behaviour positively. However, the factors, price and lack of need to switch to a new product influence buying intent negatively. Lack of awareness is the most considerable challenge to pea-based milk consumption, which calls for marketing and branding efforts based on the underlying motivational scheme of the target group.
- Renewable energy and economic growth in major renewable energy consuming countries : an empirical analysisPublication . Gaspar, Luís Pedro Cerdeira e Vasconcelos dos Santos; Leitão, Alexandra Paula Branco Pinto; Ribeiro, Ricardo Miguel Martins da CostaThis study aims to investigate the effects of renewable energy consumption on economic growth of major renewable energy consuming countries across the globe. It is used the Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index developed by Ernst & Young Global Limited, and were chosen 31 top renewable energy consuming countries to explain the growth process between 1990 and 2019. Panel estimation techniques are employed to cope with heterogeneity between countries and cointegration between variables. The results confirm the existence of long-run dynamics between traditional and energy inputs to economic growth. The findings from the average country indicate that renewable energy consumption has a significative and positive impact on economic output. It was also carried out a analysis of long-run output elasticities for each country. The findings confirm the growth hypothesis for 14 out of 31 countries, suggesting that, in most of these economies, governments, policy advisers, energy planners and associated bodies should promote investments in renewable energy sources.
