- The dangers of leaving food leftovers on your plate : consumer behavior and food plate wastePublication . Ferreira, Leonor do Vale; Costa, Ana Isabel de AlmeidaThe food plate has recently been identified as a major source of food waste. Simultaneously, concerns have been raised about the consequences of throwing food away unnecessarily. Wasteful behavior has been scientifically proven to have a negative impact on our future lives. Is it possible to waste less food? The purpose of this dissertation is to gain a better understanding of how customers feel about the food that remains on their plate after they have finished their meal when they order take-out to eat at home. The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an increase in the number of food orders received at home. As a result, it is critical that those who order and those who sell food work together to reduce food waste. According to the findings of this dissertation, organizing the Menu layout, displaying choices of portions from smallest to largest, plays an important role in persuading consumers to choose a smaller Menu. A second finding was that pride in wasting less food on the plate increases the intention to waste less food on the plate and reduce environmental impact. Finally, personal norms regarding plate waste and sustainability self-regulate consumers' intention to reduce what is left on their plate when they order extra food. The findings of this thesis show that there are ways to reduce the amount of food left on our plates.
- Attitudes and HRM decisions toward older workers in Africa: exploring contradictions through an empirical studyPublication . Rego, Arménio; Vitória, Andreia; Ribeiro, Tânia; Ribeiro, Leonor; Lourenço-Gil, Rui; Leal, Susana; Cunha, Miguel Pina eWe explored the attitudes toward older workers of African versus Portuguese managers, and how these managers make HRM decisions in scenarios involving younger versus older workers. To make cultural, social, and institutional explanations more robust, we also included two samples of students attending Portuguese universities: one sample comprising African students, the other comprising Portuguese ones. The main findings were: (a) a three-factor model (conscientiousness and performance; social capital and generosity; adaptability) of attitudes toward older workers emerged as satisfactory across the four samples; (b) in comparison with the Portuguese participants, African individuals expressed more positive attitudes toward older workers while, at the same time, discriminated against older workers more; (c) the findings were almost identical for both managers and students. Although African individuals showed more positive attitudes toward older workers than did the Portuguese, they made more discriminatory decisions in the HRM scenarios. We suggest that this contradiction may emerge from dualities characterizing Africa.
- Drawing from motion capture : developing visual languages of animationPublication . Megre, Ricardo de Sá Carneiro; Kunz, Sahra UrsulaThe work presented in this thesis aims to explore novel approaches of combining motion capture with drawing and 3D animation. As the art form of animation matures, possibilities of hybrid techniques become more feasible, and crosses between traditional and digital media provide new opportunities for artistic expression. 3D computer animation is used for its keyframing and rendering advancements, that result in complex pipelines where different areas of technical and artistic specialists contribute to the end result. Motion capture is mostly used for realistic animation, more often than not for live-action filmmaking, as a visual effect. Realistic animated films depend on retargeting techniques, designed to preserve actors performances with a high degree of accuracy. In this thesis, we investigate alternative production methods that do not depend on retargeting, and provide animators with greater options for experimentation and expressivity. As motion capture data is a great source for naturalistic movements, we aim to combine it with interactive methods such as digital sculpting and 3D drawing. As drawing is predominately used in preproduction, in both the case of realistic animation and visual effects, we embed it instead to alternative production methods, where artists can benefit from improvisation and expression, while emerging in a three-dimensional environment. Additionally, we apply these alternative methods for the visual development of animation, where they become relevant for the creation of specific visual languages that can be used to articulate concrete ideas for storytelling in animation.
- Benefits and risks of becoming a B corporationPublication . Bartmer, Amelie Maria Monica; Ramus, TommasoWhile extensive research has investigated drivers for engaging in corporate social responsibility, and being certified accordingly, few studies have disentangled the impacts of such certifications on companies. This study aims to address this gap. Through a qualitative, multiple case study I discovered that certified companies perceive both benefits and risks associated with the certifications, which vary depending on the level of integration of the certification in their accountability and strategizing. The more the certification is integrated, the more companies can benefit from it in terms of learning and stakeholder relationship. However, higher levels of integration also come with higher perceived reputational threats. Based on this empirical evidence I develop a taxonomy of benefits and risks associated with the adoption of socially responsible certifications. It contributes to research on corporate social responsibility and the adoption of certifications, while also providing some managerial implications for companies willing to engage in corporate social responsibility and acquire the B corporation certification.
- The impact of financial education on non-financial biases : opportunities and limitations to foster critical thinkingPublication . Bautz, Raphael Paul-Benjamin; Fernandes, Daniel Von Der HeydeThe present thesis investigates the spillover-effect of critical thinking developed through financial education on nonfinancial biases. More specifically, this paper examines whether financial education influence the Dunning-Kruger-Effect, the Barnum-Effect and Representation-Effect. To test for reliability of the survey and analysis, the author also includes the financial biases disposition-effect and endowment-effect as controlling-tests. Throughout the path of the research, the author finds evidence that for the three defined nonfinancial biases not only the significance-levels satisfied highest confidence thresholds, but also the explanatory power matched those of existing literature on the impact of financial education on financial biases. Advancing in the process, the author also adds the topic of financial literacy as an independent to the analysis, showing how financial education and literacy yield chances to influence situational behavior beyond purely financial situations. Lastly, the author looks deeper into the financial education and finds ambiguous impact of the determinates of financial education “origin of financial education” and “extent of financial education”. These variables however show largely differing impact on the non-financial biases researched on, yielding low further explanatory power on the opportunities to foster critical thinking through financial education. Thus, not being able to explain fully the researched impact, the author concludes the paper with strong evidence about the extent to which financial education supports the fight for critical thinking.
- How stakeholder salience influences the sustainability strategy of companies in the aviation sectorPublication . Franzen, Moritz Jonas; Ramus, TommasoThe goal of this thesis is to understand how stakeholders impact organisations in terms of sustainability and how they exert their influence. Based on stakeholder theory and sustainability literature I analysed how stakeholders influence sustainability in the aviation sector. My qualitative, comparative case study, enabled me to identify three different clusters, based on the following characteristics: i) production companies, ii) premium airlines and iii) low-cost airlines. For each of these clusters’ stakeholder pressures are shaped by the following variables: company’s business model; company’s value proposition and cultural variables in which the company is operating. The nature of stakeholder pressures, in turn, drives companies to prioritize either economic or environmental variables in their sustainability strategy. In this way, my thesis provides an answer how to identify salience in stakeholders and how these stakeholders influence organisational behaviour in the sustainability domain, thus reconnecting these cognate research streams.
- Telecareer : antecedents and consequences of strategic career behaviours on iberian teleworkersPublication . Sotto-Mayor, José Diogo de Spinola Moreira de; Pinto, Joana Cristina Novais Carneiro; Simão, Cláudia Patrícia CandeiasThis study examines the nature, causes and consequences of using strategic career management behaviours on Iberian teleworkers. The objective of this study is to develop an explanatory model of career self-management for teleworkers, using the Kaleidoscope Careers parameters developed by Sullivan and Maineiro (2008) — authenticity, balance and challenge — as the model’s strategic behaviours. This entails examining (a) the role of perceived selfefficacy, desire for career control and perceived organizational control as predictors of strategic career behaviours, and (b) the extent to which strategic behaviours determine perceived career control, objective career success, subjective career success and career satisfaction. The results of this study are intended to provide a framework for human resource development (HRD) programs, directed at aiding newcomers to telework, as a result of Covid-19 measures.
