- Culture and cognition or the power of Tacit knowledgePublication . Hanenberg, PeterThe most famous definition of tacit knowledge is a paradoxical phrase coined by Michael Polanyi: “We know more than we can tell”. Tacit knowledge is therefore something that is neither told nor spoken, something that is not “at hand”. It refers to something that we know, without our being aware of that knowledge. However, we depend upon it in order to be able to act. In order to develop a clearer description of the importance of tacit knowledge (in the context of the current crisis), we examine some examples of “gut feelings” that lead us to solve problems without the explicit intervention of knowledge. Next we present the idea of a “geography of thought” in order to describe tacit knowledge in cultural diversity. Finally, we relate Polanyi’s concept to the ‘Cognitive System of Culture’ developed by Leonard Talmy, in order to pave the way for three conclusions: (1) tacit knowledge is based on experience, (2) it is shared (and not simply individual), and (3) it therefore represents a challenge for education. Knowing more about tacit knowledge means recognising its fundamental power for determining culture and its projection into the near future.
- Design a course supported with multimedia and online learning: the adaptation as a fundamental.Publication . Chenoll Mora, AntonioIn this work we are going to share some reflections on learning in general and on the learning of foreign languages in particular, both of which are dependent on the context in several levels, learning styles, and both the input and output material's format. We will confer an essential role to the discernment between informal and formal learning as a means to the development of a lifelong learning capability. Since we consider real learning to be built on the basis of social and personal research experiences we will consider this capability as an element to bear in mind when designing an online course and one as much or even more important than the acquisition of contents. Let us not forget that the development of cognitive learning abilities is essential.
- The American Dream: Narratives of Space and Place in Second LifePublication . Ferreira, CátiaSecond Life is one of the most complex virtual worlds available due to one of its main components – user-generated content. In Second Life players are active contributors to in-world development, and only 1% of the contents available were created by Linden Lab; players are not only contributing to space, but also to its social development. Some researchers suggest that Second Life's development history reflect California's one; not only because Linden Lab is a Californian company, but mainly because Second Life is announced as “your world, your imagination”, reflecting at the same time the “Californian ideology” (Barbrook and Cameron, 2001; Boellstorff, 2008) and the chasing for the American dream. The aim of this paper is to verify if Second Life's development may be considered a remix of the chasing of American dream by understanding how users are taking advantage of the building tools available, creating their own virtual places and fulfilling their own wishes. To accomplish this goal a qualitative methodology was used based on a multimodal netnographic research (Kozinets, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010). The data collection methods were auto-netnography (Kedzior and Kozinets, 2009) and detailed observational data collection of 64 in-world locations.

- Digital reading: the transformation of reading practicesPublication . Cardoso, Gustavo; Ganito, Carla; Ferreira, CátiaThe paper aims to present the preliminary results of a two-year project having as scope the future of the book and libraries stemming from the current reading practices in Portugal. In the scope of the project, the presentation of the findings will be focused on the mobile consumption practices in Portugal. This research is based on a mixed methodology: a quantitative survey – Network Society in Portugal – articulated with a qualitative analysis of the discourses of the representatives of what Thompson calls the publishing chain (librarians, publishing houses, authors, and content and soft/hardware providers). To understand the impact of mobile devices on reading practices is crucial for libraries and publishing houses. Mobile devices offer augmented mobility – a mobility that is connected, networked and collaborative. Although the hype is currently around eBooks, we are still faced with a market where the vast majority still reads books on paper. The sales of devices have exploded but eBooks are lagging behind. What do people use their tablets, iPads, and eReaders for? What are they reading and where? How do they articulate their readings with other media and cultural consumptions? Those are the central questions that we are aiming at answering.
