- Detection of the crystallization process of paracetamol with a multi-mode optical fiber in a reflective configurationPublication . Soares, Liliana; Novais, Susana; Ferreira, António; Frazão, Orlando; Silva, SusanaA configuration of a refractometer sensor is described with the aim of optically detecting the crystallization process of paracetamol. The developed sensing head is based on a conventional cleaved multi-mode fiber. The fiber tip sensor structure was submitted to contact with the liquid of interest (paracetamol fully dissolved in 40% v/v of ethanol/water) and the crystallization process of paracetamol, induced with continued exposure to air, was monitored in real time.
- Epidemiology of periodontal disease among the elderlyPublication . Veiga, Nélio; Monteiro, Carla; Couto, Catarina; Silva, Diogo; Clemente, Luís; Costa, Rita; Sousa, Manuel de; Marques, Tiago; Silva, Susana; Pereira, CarlosThe present study aims to reflect on the oral health status of the elderly, addressing periodontal disease, as well as the importance of oral health, general health and quality of life. The methodology adopted consisted of a bibliographic research of scientific articles indexed in PUBMED® and Google Scholar® with the following combined keywords: “Periodontal Disease”, “Gerodontology”, “Oral Health”, “Elderly” and “Epidemiology”, either in Portuguese or in English. The exclusion criteria for the selection of the scientific articles used consisted in limiting the research to the Portuguese and English languages, limiting the publication date to the last 10 years, and only scientific articles referring to the epidemiology of periodontal disease among the elderly. Therefore, from a total of 33 scientific articles, only 17 scientific articles were selected for the present research. The most recent studies do show that periodontal disease is clearly a public health issue, increasing among all ages. However, this oral pathology should be carefully analyzed among the elderly considering the higher risk of association with the development of other systemic diseases and also the physiological, mental and social changes that characterize this specific age group.
- Insights on consumer online purchase decisions of women’s footwearPublication . Silva, Susana; Monteiro, Adriana; Duarte, PauloShoes are probably one of the most difficult products to sell online due to the high need-for-touch (NFT) displayed: people need to experiment the product before buying it, more than in any other item. On another hand, women are more prone than men to buy fashion and apparel products through the web channel. This paper investigates the factors driving women consumers to shop footwear products online. A qualitative research method was used grounded on semistructured, in-depth interviews that were conducted to corroborate the constructs defined in the proposed conceptual model namely: convenience, recreation, NFT and social e-shopping. The interviews were focused on the demand side to understand the female consumers’ perspective and on the top managers of women’s shoes companies representing the suppliers’ viewpoint. The results show that women highly appreciate the convenience that shopping shoes online provides as well as its recreational nature. The NFT also stands out in the shoe market context mainly due to the particularities related to shoe size. Additionally, social e-shopping was found not be as important for women as anticipated as they see social networks more as a communication platform for brands, and less as a factor that influences their predisposition to shop shoes online. On the suppliers’ side, the interviews revealed that managers believe in bloggers and social media influence and its consideration as part of the overall marketing strategy.
- Measuring experience in international business: a systematic literature reviewPublication . Parracho, João; Silva, SusanaThe paper explores the indicators that measure the experience in international business. Literature review was used to ascertain the state of the art of the existing indexes and theories. The internationalisation of businesses is a fundamental strategic step to increase companies' competitive advantage and profits. Nevertheless, even though internationalisation is widely accepted as an important source of value for companies and is a broad object of investigation, there is still much to study about how to measure experience at the level of international business. The absence of a coherent approach to measure experience in international businesses in past empirical studies made it difficult to create a solution with theoretical concepts that would support further studies in this matter. The results are not contradictory, but complementary, as, through individual internationalization indicators, it is possible to evolve and create indices, such as the Transnationality Index or the Transnational Activities Spread Index. The biggest constraint on the analysed indices is the fact that they focus mainly on the internationalisation of transnational companies and the type of data that was used to build the indexes (secondary data). However, by studying international experience through the number of years and the network spread, it is possible to overcome some of the existing challenges.

- ResiliScence 4 COVID-19: social sensing & intelligence for forecasting human response in future COVID-19 scenarios, towards social systems resiliencePublication . Gaspar, Rui; Rodrigues, Ana Paula; Raposo, Beatriz; Godinho, Cristina; Boavida, Fernando; Leiras, Gisela; Toscano, Hugo; Filipe, Jessica; Silva, Jorge Sá; Fernandes, Marcelo; Arriaga, Miguel; Francisco, Rita; Domingos, Samuel; Silva, Susana; Espassandim, TeresaUm cenário amplamente discutido face à atual pandemia, prevê a criação de vacinas para a COVID-19.
- Social networking sites and researcher’s successPublication . Mazurek, Grzegorz; Górska, Anna; Korzynski, Pawel; Silva, SusanaUniversities are evaluated more often basing on the citation scores of their employees, schools translate this pressure onto the scholars. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to identify whether how the use of social networking sites (SNS) may enhance the impact of the research and thus contribute to the academic success in terms of citations; and to gain a more comprehensive understanding of which SNS may have a positive relation to the academic citations. This study drew from the research on social networks, SNS, and higher education; and empirical study results. Researcher’s SNS use is positively correlated with the academic citations rate – the higher the scholar’s presence in academic, professional, relationship, microblogging SNS, the higher scholarly success. This paper explores the association between the researcher’s social media presence on fathomable SNS (ResearchGate, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) and the level of citations – academic success.

- Striving for cross-channel synergy: a study of SMEs in transition economyPublication . Dokić, Aleksa; Stojković, Dragan; Silva, Susana; Vlačić, BožidarThe extent to which SMEs in transitional economies ensure seamless shopping experience may make the difference between venture´s success or failure. In order to respond to increasingly demanding consumers, ventures in transitional economies are shifting from mono-channels to multi-channel strategies. As the ventures in transitional economies are characterised by limited resources and undeveloped marketing channels, the purpose of this study is to examine the role of organizational support in the pursuit for cross-channel synergy. Drawing on the data collected from 97 SMEs in Serbia we found that the higher levels of cross-channel synergy are achieved through direct support to omni-channel (integrated approach) and additional enchancment of offline channels. We further discuss why an additional support to offline channels rather than online channels is more prudent and provide fruitfull future research avenues.
