- Proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Information Retrieval on Current Research Information SystemsPublication . Tenreiro De Magalhaes, Sérgio; Santos, Leonel; Stempfhuber, Maximilian; Fugl, Liv; Alroe, BoThe recognition of entities and their relationships in document collections is an important step towards the discovery of latent knowledge as well as to support knowledge management applications. The challenge lies on how to extract and correlate entities, aiming to answer key knowledge management questions, such as; who works with whom, on which projects, with which customers and on what research areas. The present work proposes a knowledge mining approach supported by information retrieval and text mining tasks in which its core is based on the correlation of textual elements through the LRD (Latent Relation Discovery) method. Our experiments show that LRD outperform better than other correlation methods. Also, we present an application in order to demonstrate the approach over knowledge management scenarios.

- The People’s Republic of China: the emerging cyberpowerPublication . Tenreiro De Magalhaes, Sérgio; Rios, Maria José; Santos, Leonel; Jahankhani, HamidThe People’s Republic of China (PRC) has a long tradition on military strategy. In the end of the 20 th century this was one of the first nations to prepare itself for the new emerging concept of war that includes the combat in cyberspace, both with the intention to obtain privileged information (espionage), to reduce the enemy attack and/or military capability or even to create casualties. This paper presents an overview on the known facts on this issue, concluding on an urgent need to improve the security technologies and policies of the digital systems used by the governments, namely in what concerns to authentication processes and the need for occidental countries to prepare personnel with knowledge on the culture, on the language and on the thought of the PRC, so that they can be ready for the next steps of this (re)emerging nation.
- Quantitative analysis of PIN choices: a contribution to the establishment of authentication requirementsPublication . Carvalho, José Carlos; Sá, Vítor; Magalhães, Maria José; Magalhães, Sérgio Tenreiro deThe authentication using a PIN number remains one of the most used ways to enter a system (mobile phone, ATM, etc.). Many people seem to dislike this form of authentication because they simply despise their use, placing unsafe PINs just because they have to put some. Some relevant results are the combination 1234, thecombinations using only one digit (example: 1111), or the central line of the numerical keypad. On the other hand there is some understanding because it is proven that remember strong passwords is a difficult task for humans, and the tendency is to choose the simplest ones. This research had a sample of 497 participants and aimed to understand the preferred choice of the participants in relation to the number of digits used for a PIN number (a choice between four and/or six digits) and realized the amount of times that each of the available digits was used. To this end it was developed a web-based tool for entering the data. This application was intended only to the data collection process, being the information processed further. Through this application, the user was asked to enter four and/or six-digit PINs. The method does not raise any doubt on the participants, which were informed about the anonymity and confidentiality of the data, and never they were asked to identify themselves. Participants were asked to use the PINs that they normally use in other contexts. With the analysis of the data it was possible to understand the distribution of digits per position in a PIN, check which digits is more/less used in each position, and check which digit is more/less used regardless of its position. Among the conclusions it appears that the layout of the numeric keypad of the system influence the PIN choice.
- Internet of things for the hotel industry: a reviewPublication . Magalhães, Sérgio Tenreiro de; Magalhães, M. J.; Revett, KennethThe Internet of Things (IoT) represents an opportunity for the hotel in-dustry to increase customer satisfaction while simultaneously reducing operational costs. This paper analyses the existing knowledge on this subject, through a re-view of the relevant publications indexed by Scopus and/or ISI Web of Science, concluding that, despite the existence of many relevant patents, registered in the past few years, the published research is very limited on this topic. The restriction to publication prior to the conclusion of the patent registration process may be a justification for this fact, and, if so, the near future will bring many novelties that will help the development of the hotel industry. It is also possible to conclude from this work that the potential of IoT is not yet well explored in the hotel indus-Try, once authors frequently theorize on the use of IoT for applications that could easily be of interest for the hotel industry, but fail to identify that opportunity as a major market.

- Enhancing elderly mobility through IoT using textiles: a reviewPublication . Magalhães, M. J.; Magalhães, Sérgio Tenreiro de; Revett, KennethThe aging of population worldwide and the increasing of average life expectancy of the world population become a social and economic problem for society. It's necessary to provide solutions which can maintain the independency of elderly and their mobility, along more time, avoiding the unnecessary perma-nence in hospitals and institutions for the elderly. The use of IoT using textiles is a very interesting approach because of the proximity of people to these materials. This work reviews the development on IoT using textiles to increase the mobility of elderly people and concludes that this is a field of growing interest. Although, there is few investigation, especially in what concerns studies focusing on the im-portance of improving the mobility of the elderly. There are studies that lead to the possibility of promoting this physical capability but have not been designed for that purpose, but we believe that approach of the problem of mobility of elderly people using the IoT based on clothes should be treated with specificity, because the consequences of this not happening, will affect not only the elderly but the whole society.
- Infrastructural threats to the nature tourist – The case of the Serra da PenhaPublication .
