  • Drug addiction: the relationship between nursing interventions and sensitive outcomes. A systematic literature review
Publication . Seabra, Paulo; Santos, Alexandra Sarreira; Garcia, Maria de Lurdes Medeiros; Amendoeira, José; Sá, Luís Octávio de
Background and Significance: The analysis of care contribution provided by different professionals and the results of their interventions is a recommendation that emerges from the practice stems, from costs concerns and to re-structure health services. The need to deepen the nursing contribution, to health outcomes achieved by people, is our challenge. We need to show further evidence that nursing sensitive health outcomes can contribute to health benefits of the people and pronounce today, the nursing role. This evidence may help to thinking about the practice, allowing that the new knowledge generated, contributes to its effectiveness. When we are dealing with a subjective and multidimensional state as drug addiction, with people in a methadone maintenance program, the health outcomes systematization is no easy task. Objectives/Aims: Identify nursing sensitive health outcomes with drug addicts and identify nursing interventions involved. Methods: We mobilize the guide lines of the Cochrane Center. We formulate the research question and determine the inclusion criteria by PI[C] OS method. We searched in B-on and Ebsco platforms and access to Scielo, Lilacs, Medicaribe databases. We search studies with samples above 18 years. Results: We selected 8 articles from a survey of 353 primary search. We found evidence of 17 nursing sensitive outcomes, which may be grouped into: clinical, functional status, health status knowledge, self care and nursing care satisfaction. These results were evaluated in different contexts of care practices. We found 12 nursing interventions responsible for those results. Four of the researches are randomized control trials. Conclusions/Implications: There is evidence that nursing care concern in its approach with the characteristic complexity of this chronic disease. Nurses contribute and influence health outcomes obtained by drugs addicts. Through the health promotion, drug administration, the therapeutic relationship and the counseling, among other interventions, nurses contribute mostly to the knowledge of the disease and treatments, help to reduce drug consumption, manage the withdrawal and the management of medication effects. This review indicates the need to probe the outcomes and the effectiveness of nursing intervention. There is no evidence of this type of research in Portugal.
  • Technological advances applied to TB vaccine development: how can AI contribute to the development of new TB vaccines?
Publication . Pereira, João Santos; Pires, David
Tuberculosis is a long-standing global health challenge. Yet, so far, all efforts to develop an effective vaccine that surpasses the limitations of the century-old BCG vaccine have been unsuccessful. This calls for new technological solutions that can aid researchers in digesting decades of data and predict the solutions with the highest successful outcomes. This chapter discusses how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to enhance each stage of vaccine development. AI, particularly machine learning (ML) techniques, can assist in antigen identification, epitope prediction, and the design of immunogens, thus streamlining the vaccine development process. We highlight some key AI-driven tools of reverse vaccinology and predictive models that allow researchers to analyse vast biological datasets, enhancing the accuracy and speed of candidate screening. We also acknowledge the many challenges that need to be overcome to improve vaccine development and deployment, the difficulties in integrating AI into existing processes and the need for high-quality datasets and computational power. This underscores the necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration to overcome these barriers and fully realise the potential of AI in creating effective TB vaccines.

Publication . Guerra, Magda; Pina, Fernando; Condeço, Luís; Santos, Dina; Martins, Isabel
The ICN (International Congress of Nurses) approves the position on safe appropriations. This subject is the subject of recurrent debate regarding the lack of nurses worldwide. Thus the concept of safe nurse staffing emerged, and this goes beyond considering the number of nurses by also valuing their skills and the context in which care is provided. Objectives: To analyze the different ways of operationalizing the concept of safe nurse staffing and its impact on the results obtained in terms of clients, nurses and healthcare organizations. Methods: A literature review of the research conducted between 2010 and 2017 on the theme of safe nurse staffing, methods of staffing calculation, nursing ratios, and the impact of safe staffing. Conclusions: There is no evidence of a universal method because none of the methods of staffing calculation integrates the diversity involved in the different facets of the concept, nor incorporates the necessary dynamism to adapt to different contexts. Implication for nursing: Safe nurse staffing is a determining factor in the quality of care provided to the client and it has impact on the results obtained for care providers and organizations.
