- A contextualized emotion perception assessment relates to personal and social well-beingPublication . Kafetsios, Konstantinos; Hess, Ursula; Dostal, Daniel; Seitl, Martin; Hypsova, Petra; Hareli, Shlomo; Alonso-Arbiol, Itziar; Schütz, Astrid; Gruda, Dritjon; Campbell, Kelly; Chen, Bin Bin; Held, Marco J.; Kamble, Shanmukh; Kimura, Takuma; Kirchner-Häusler, Alexander; Livi, Stefano; Mandal, Eugenia; Ochnik, Dominika; Sakman, Ezgi; Sumer, Nebi; Theodorou, Annalisa; Uskul, Ayse K.Emotion Recognition Accuracy (ERA) is vital for social functioning and social relationships, yet empirical support for a positive link with well-being has been sparse. In three studies, we show that the Assessment of Contextualized Emotions (ACE) which distinguishes between accurately perceiving intended emotions and bias due to perceiving additional, secondary emotions, consistently predicted personal and social well-being. Across thirteen world cultures, accuracy was associated with higher well-being and life satisfaction, and bias linked to loneliness. A social interaction study in Czech Republic found accuracy (bias) was positively (negatively) associated with social well-being. The effects of accuracy and bias on well-being were partially mediated by social interaction quality in a third study. These findings further our understanding of ERA's social functions.
- Early warning signs of adolescents aggressive behavior risk in institutional setting: a scoping review protocolPublication . Ferreira, António; Fluttert, Frans; Cardoso, Tiago; Rosa, Amorim; Sá, LuísAim: The main objective of the review is to map the literature on the warning signs of aggressive behaviour in adolescent inpatients in an institutional setting. Introduction Aggressive behaviour, self ou directed to others is a problem in the context of healthcare. Although they can be spontaneous, most of them are escalating behaviours manifested by warning signs, which, through early identification by nurses, allows for early intervention with an impact on the use of restrictive methods. However, there are gaps in research into these signs, particularly in the adolescent population. Inclusion criteria: The question formulation framework PCC was adopted, with P being the population (adolescents, aged 10 to 19 inclusive), C the concept (warning signs of aggressive behaviour) and C the context (institutions for adolescents). Methodology: The scoping review protocol will adopt the methodology proposed by the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The search will be carried out in CINAHL Complete, APA PsycArticles, PUBMED and Scopus, via an EBSCO interface and the search strategy will be carried out in accordance with the respective databases/repositories. Titles and abstracts of published and unpublished studies will be analysed within the inclusion criteria. The process of selecting, extracting and analysing the data will be carried out by three independent reviewers. Results: The results will be presented in tabular and narrative form. Conclusions: This scoping review will contribute to identify the warning signs of aggressive behaviour for adolescents in an institutional setting, enhancing nurses' early intervention in preventing and managing the risk of these behaviours occurring.
- Evaluation of innovative insect-based products by Portuguese consumers using a repeated exposure approach under a controlled settingPublication . Barbosa, B.; Rocha, C.; Ribeiro, J. C.; Lima, R. C.; Costa, A. I. A.; Monteiro, M. J. P.; Maya, C.; Roos, N.; Cunha, L. M.In an era of considerable environmental pressures, edible insects have demonstrated their ability to integrate innovative and sustainable food production methods. Nonetheless, there are clear obstacles to their acceptance, particularly in Western countries. With a view to a longitudinal analysis of the consumption moment, the study's main goal was to assess how the repeated exposure approach can impact consumer's liking and sensory perception of different insect-based products. At the same time, these products were compared with commercially available plant-based analogue products, as these types of products can be targeted to the same market. For each group of products, the impact of repeated exposure on participants exposed to the products in a household context was compared with a group of participants who had no intervention at home. This comparative assessment was carried out in a sensory laboratory environment. Five different insect and plant-based products were assessed on a 9-point hedonic scale with open comments to complement the analysis by two panels of 58 participants. Significant differences were found between products throughout the exposure, with most products decreasing the liking scores between exposures. However, no significant differences concerning exposure were identified between the intervention and non-intervention groups. Regarding the evaluation of the samples according to the different exposure groups, it was observed that there was no noticeable impact of exposure on the evaluation of the insect-based products evaluated by the intervention group and the plant-based products tasted by the non-intervention group. This study reinforces the impact of repeated exposure on the overall liking levels of the samples, with valuable findings on sensory perception that can be translated into insect-based product development.
- Creativity gain or drain: the dual association between boundary-spanning and creativityPublication . Tang, Mingfeng; Liu, Xiaomeng; Walsh, Grace Sheila; Gruda, DritjonBoundary-spanning behavior, which involves building relationships with external entities to achieve organizational goals, has been highlighted as a key mechanism for enhancing the inflow of external knowledge. While boundary-spanning can fuel creativity by providing employees with new resources, ideas, and inspiration, it also poses challenges, potentially depleting resources and inducing stress that hinders creativity. Drawing on Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, this paper explores the dual impact of boundary-spanning on employee creativity—serving both as a facilitator and inhibitor. Through an experimental study (n = 299) and a field study (n = 331 employees, 49 supervisors), we examine how external engagement fosters or hampers creative thinking, focusing on the mechanisms of resource gain and resource drain. Our findings contribute to the understanding of how organizations can balance the demands of boundary-spanning to harness its creative potential while mitigating its negative consequences. This research provides actionable insights for businesses seeking to thrive in competitive, innovation-driven environments.

- Exploring relations between social and emotional skills and bullying: the role of self-concept and empathyPublication . Veríssimo, Lurdes; Marques, Alexandra; Costa, Marisa; Castro, Isabel; Martins, Filipe; Miranda, FranciscaBullying in school has become a public health problem. Among the various bullying’s risk factors, the vulnerabilities associated with socio-emotional skills stand out. The present study aims to explore the relationship between bullying, victimization, selfconcept, and empathy; to test differences in victimization and bullying between boys and girls; and to study predictors of victimization and bullying. Participated 107 adolescents from 12 to 17 years old characterized by multiple family, social, and economic vulnerabilities. Three measures were used to assess empathy, self-concept, and bullying/victimization experience. The results show a significant negative correlation between victimization and all dimensions of self-concept. Bullying is only associated to popularity. There is no association between empathy and bullying or victimization. Girls significantly experienced more victimization than boys. Boys performed more bullying than girls. Self-concept is a significant predictor of victimization and bullying. Results are discussed in light of the socio-emotional skills paradigm and its power in preventing bullying.
- Adaptative biological response of aerobic granular sludge to events of single or combined wastewater related stressorsPublication . Alves, Marta; Henriques, Isabel; Castro, Paula M. L.; Amorim, Catarina L.Wastewater comprises various stressors and their individual and combined immediate effects on aerobic granular sludge (AGS) are still underexplored. In this study, the AGS was exposed for 24 hours to wastewater with varying salt concentrations (up to 30 g NaCl L⁻¹) alongside pharmaceuticals (diclofenac, DCF or carbamazepine, CBZ). Differences in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production and composition were observed between single and combined stressor exposures. The removal of pharmaceuticals was influenced by the wastewater salinity level and the type of pharmaceutical, with a positive correlation found between the EPS polysaccharides content and the removal efficiency at salinity levels up to 10 g NaCl L⁻¹ . The combination of salinity and pharmaceuticals in wastewater also impacted the AGS bacteriome composition, with the bacteriome of the AGS not-exposed to stressors showing greater similarity to that of AGS exposed to DCF than to that exposed to CBZ, at each wastewater salinity level. Functional profiling suggested that short-term exposure to stressors slightly increased the relative abundance of mismatch repair, cell motility, and homologous recombination functions in the AGS microbiome. Summing up, the stressors impact on AGS bacteriome structure and EPS production varies depending on the pharmaceutical and whether it is combined with salt or not. This study unveiled the immediate AGS response to both single and combined stressors exposure, but a more thoughtful characterization of the bacteriome composition over the early adaptation period to stressors is needed to understand the community succession and to identify key microbial groups.
