- Perceptions of the Greek public on the revolutionary vision of Philip Morris International towards a smoke free-futurePublication . Doukas, Anastasios; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusTobacco is the only consumer product which kills approximately half of its regular users. Therefore, traditionally, tobacco companies, were always addressed with scepticism and suspicion when undertaking corporate social responsibility activities. Recently, Philip Morris International developed a portfolio of revolutionary products in order to transform its business and deliver, what the company has labelled as, a smoke-free future with no cigarettes, placing corporate social responsibility at the center of its main business strategy. According to the company, the motivation behind this transformation is the expectation from society for them to act responsibly. After, identifying literature’s gaps this study focused on examining the perceptions of the public in regards to the flagship of the smoke-free products, the IQOS, and the company’s smoke-free vision. To answer this research question, a survey was conducted. Data from 106 responses were collected and analysed using IBM’s SPSS statistical package. The analysis of the results revealed quite high purchasing intentions for IQOS. In addition, the Greek public considers IQOS to be safer than cigarettes. Furthermore, the majority of the respondents expressed that the vision is of primary importance and that the company took a lot of effort to be socially responsible, however the trust in the vision is lower. Overall, this paper is considered to provide an insight on how the Greek public perceives the smoke-free vision and the IQOS product by Philip Morris International.
- Examining the relationship between time and factor anomaly returnsPublication . Kokkonen, Joni; Romeiro, Paulo Alexandre Mendes RamosBy examining the return characteristics of 10 different, long minus short, accounting-based anomaly portfolios, we find that a portfolio that rebalances daily, based on either 10-K or 10-Q releases, is optimal when transaction costs are low (around 2% or less) and the anomalies are robust, with a 4.5% annualized return differential being created versus a yearly rebalance. However, when that is not the case, we find that a yearly rebalancing is best. Furthermore, we determine that no other common rebalancing periods (such as weekly) should be used as they consistently fail to outperform either the daily or yearly ones. We also find a significant clustering of anomaly returns around the release of 10-K and 10-Q financial statements, primarily up to 15 days, corroborating theories connecting news releases to anomaly returns. Nonetheless, we find anomaly returns to still be consistently present up to 365 days after a financial statement release, opposing the idea of fast market responses to information and large clustering. Overall, there appears to be a connection between anomaly returns and time considerations that warrants further study.
- The impact of CSR in people’s enhancement with art : a case study of Fundação Calouste GulbenkianPublication . Abecasis, Constança Sepúlveda de Castelbranco; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusThe present research studies the effect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a tool to increase people’s enhancement with art through the willingness to go to artistic events which promote specific social causes. Art has proven to be a subject of extremely importance either for communities as for individuals. The relationship between CSR and willingness to attend to events is analyzed in this research having as case study Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG). Different aspects of CSR are investigated, such as CSR awareness, FCG reputation and the importance of art in the background. The CSR implications over willingness to attend to events are not direct, although some effect might be found. It has no direct effect over people’s willingness to attend when the social initiatives are linked to specific events, although, people who are more aware of Gulbenkian social initiatives have better reputation of the foundation, which itself has effect over the willingness to attend. Further the relationship with art during the background is of extremely importance, once it increases the willingness to keep this relationship during adulthood. CSR must be used as a way to promote art events, not directly, but keeping a clear relation between the company and the corporate social initiatives, using it to increase the company’s reputation, and therefore, increase people’s interest in the art and events.
