- Understanding the influencing factors on firms’ social media marketing strategies development: a cross-country investigationPublication . Li, Fangfang; Silva, Susana C.; Larimo, JormaPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors influencing the development of social media marketing strategy in an international context. We specifically look at the potential drivers and barriers throughout the social media marketing strategy development process and how cultural differences shape social media marketing strategy decision-making among firms in international markets. Design/methodology/approach: The study is conducted with an inductive research approach involving in-depth interviews with 32 firms from Finland, China and Brazil. Using inductive data analysis, we identify both internal and external factors that drive and hinder the development of firms’ social media marketing strategies. Moreover, we explore the essential elements in social media marketing strategy development based on the key practices observed among these firms, which enables us to conduct a comparative analysis of how cultural values influence the development of social media marketing strategies. Findings: Our findings underscore the importance of both internal (i.e. resources and capabilities) and external (i.e. market-level and country-level) factors that influence the development of social media marketing strategy. Our analysis also unveiled four key practices throughout the social media marketing strategy development process: social selling, content marketing, risk management and relationship management. Additionally, we identified three distinct mindsets regarding firms’ social media selling objectives across companies in the three countries. Originality/value: The comparative approach provides novel insight into firms' international social media marketing strategy. Our proposed conceptual model shows the development process of social media marketing strategy in the international context. The research propositions highlight the role of cultural values and open up new avenues for future research.

M. VanThe Triple Dominance Measure (choosing between prosocial, individualistic, and competitive options) and the Slider Measure (“sliding” between various orientations, for example, from individualistic to prosocial) are two widely used techniques to measure social value orientation, that is, the weight individuals assign to own and others’ outcomes in interdependent situations. Surprisingly, there is only moderate correspondence between these measures, but it is unclear why and what the implications are for identifying individual differences in social value orientation. Using a dataset of 8021 participants from 31 countries and regions, this study revealed that the Slider Measure identified fewer competitors than the Triple Dominance Measure, accounting for approximately one-third of the non-correspondence between the two measures. This is (partially) because many of the Slider items do not afford a competitive option. In items where competition is combined with individualism, competitors tended to make the same choices as individualists. Futhermore, we demonstrated the uniqueness of competitors. Compared to prosocials and individualists, competitors exhibited lower levels of both social mindfulness and trust. Overall, the present work highlights the importance of situational affordances in measuring personality, the benefits of distinguishing between individualists and competitors, and the importance of utilizing a measure that distinguishes between these two proself orientations.
- The potential of private and public creative sector in the efficient cultural integration of Afghan refugees in PortugalPublication . Safa, Afra; Castro, Laura Lucinda OliveiraAmid the growing influx of Afghan refugees following the Taliban resurgence in 2021, Portugal, with its emerging status as a host nation, faces both challenges and opportunities in refugee integration. This dissertation explores the role of Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) in the integration of Afghan refugees in Portugal, focusing on their potential to foster social cohesion, cultural preservation, and community engagement. While previous literature has explored CCIs' role in refugee well-being in countries like the UK and Germany, this study aims to fill the gap in the Portuguese context. Using a mixed-methods approach, including interviews with Afghan refugees and stakeholders in Portugal’s CCI sector, the research investigates how creative fields such as music, arts, and cultural heritage can facilitate integration. By exploring the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) that has been resettled in Braga, the study emphasizes the potential of CCIs to bridge cultural divides, preserve Afghan heritage, and promote mutual understanding between refugees and host communities. The dissertation highlights the critical need for more targeted, culturally sensitive policies that address the specific challenges Afghan refugees face, such as language barriers and socio-economic hurdles while offering practical recommendations for the design and implementation of CCI-based integration programs. Findings reveal that CCIs are not only pivotal in easing cultural integration but also in providing Afghan refugees with a platform for identity reconstruction and community participation, helping foster a more inclusive society. This research contributes to the broader discourse on refugee integration, offering valuable insights for policymakers, NGOs, and cultural practitioners working in Portugal and similar contexts globally.

- Unlocking the potential of supercritical CO₂ for an efficient pancreatic tissue decellularization: a step towards an advanced cell therapyPublication . Sá, Simone C.; Pazmino, Carlos; Sá, Joana; Amorim, Sara; Ribeiro, Viviana P.; Costa, Raquel; Oliveira, Ana L.Decellularization, the process of removing cells from a tissue or organ while preserving the extracellular matrix (ECM), often employs harsh chemical solvents, compromising ECM integrity. This is particularly damaging in case of soft tissues. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), achieved at 31ºC and 74Bar, is an alternative solvent which presents high transfer rates and diffusivity while being chemically inert and non-toxic. This study investigates the potential use of scCO₂ for decellularizing pancreas, a highly sensitive tissue, aiming to preserve as effectively as possible, its native architecture and biochemical cues, while ensuring its immune tolerance. This approach seeks to establish a platform for pancreatic cell therapy applications. Porcine pancreatic tissue was decellularized by traditional and scCO₂ decellularization methods. Our first results indicate that the use of scCO₂ contributes to a more efficient cell removal protocol, while it allowed to considerably reduce the use of chemicals and proved to be less time consuming. This innovative approach highlights scCO₂ as a viable alternative for pancreatic tissue decellularization, opening new opportunities for advancing current cell therapies that lack proper mimetic environments to maintain cell viability and post-implantation functionality.

- Adenosine-loaded silk fibroin: a promising approach for chronic wound healing and regenerationPublication . Bernardes, Beatriz G.; Costa, Raquel; García-González, Carlos A.; Oliveira, Ana L.Introduction: Chronic wounds are one of the major therapeutic and healthcare challenges affecting the population globally. During the healing stage of a wound the production of exudate is considered as a normal process. However, its overproduction can compromise and delay the inflammatory phase, contributing to wound chronicity. Aerogels are highly porous materials which can provide advanced performance for wound healing, as they can be tailored for a fast and directional fluid transfer of the exudate; also, they can have a therapeutic function, as carriers for bioactive compounds. Silk fibroin (SF) protein is well known to stabilize bioactive molecules and therapeutic drugs while supporting cell proliferation, being presently used in wound healing and regeneration. In this work, we propose the use supercritical CO2 technology to develop SF aerogel particles as a controlled release system of adenosine (ADO). This nucleoside is herein proposed for the first time, being expected to trigger the healing and regeneration of chronic wounds. Methods: Development of aerogel particles SF aqueous solutions at different concentrations (3, 5 and 7% (w/v)) loaded with ADO at different weight ratios (10:1, 5:1, 2:1), were introduced into absolute ethanol and Span 80 followed by supercritical CO2 drying (Figure 1). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the morphology of the particles and to visualize their interaction with; laser diffraction was performed to determine particles diameter. The biocompatibility was assessed using three types of cells that play an important role during wound healing, human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) and human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC). The interaction between ADO-loaded SF aerogel particles was assessed by viability and proliferation assays. Quantitative data were subjected to an analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s test; α=0.05). Conclusions: The microparticles showed favorable morphological properties and supported cell proliferation and biocompatibility, with drug release tests indicating rapid adenosine release. Ongoing assays with HDMEC indicate favorable cell behavior, providing insights into their angiogenic properties. Future work involves optimizing formulations for enhanced therapeutic efficacy and exploring clinical applications in chronic wound management and tissue regeneration.

- Infanticídio : o fundamento do privilégio punitivoPublication .
