Abstract(s)
The growing valuation of public participation in cultural activities, evidenced by recent studies, has reconfigured the practices of cultural institutions. Factors such as the expansion of access to culture and the development of competencies drive the expansion of the bond between the public and the institution. These results point to the relevance of participation as a strategy for the democratization of culture and the construction of more just and inclusive societies. Based on the study of youth participation practices within cultural institutions, the Youth Advisory Council program, promoted by the Centro de Arte Moderna of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, is analyzed as a case study, in what is the first edition of this model that incorporates young people as active agents in the renewal of the institution. With the question “Why, for what and how to include youth participation in the recreation of an art and culture center?”, this study aimed to understand the creation, process and methodology of the program as well as the effects and perceptions throughout its implementation by its participants. The study accompanies and analyzes the agents involved - institution, program coordination and participants - using a qualitative analysis - through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, focus group and survey.
