- The privacy-personalization paradox in the context of the online mental health care industryPublication . Maret, Kelly; Jacinto, SofiaThe rapid delvelopment of digital technologies created a shift in the mental health care industry and the demand for online acces is rising. The goal of this research was to explore the privacy-personalization paradox in the context of online mental health care websites, to examine its effects on trust, perceived usefulness and likelihood of use. The paradox states that personalization requires consumer data, but the data collection creates data privacy concerns among consumers, thus inhibiting the personalization of services. It was hypothesized that high personalization and low privacy concern have positive effects on trust, perceived usefulness and likelihood of use, compared to low personalization and high privacy concern. This is explored under the lens of the social exchange theory. A survey was conducted using a mixed-subject design, where participants were either assigned to a high or low privacy concern condition (between-subject), then, both were exposed to a personalized, as well as a non-personalized condition (within-subject). Findings showed that personalization has a significant positive effect on trust, perceived usefulness and likelihood of use, compared to no personalization. Additionally, low privacy concern increases trust and likelihood of use, thus suggesting a paradoxical relationship. However, privacy concern has no significant effect on perceived usefulness, suggesting an absence of the paradox. These findings are relevant for practitioners to understand and balance the paradox when offering e-mental health care to customers.
- How the country-of-origin effect influence portuguese consumers’ perceptions and behaviours : the case of «Portugal sou eu» campaignPublication . Braga, João Melo de Matos Salazar; Duarte, António Alexandre de OliveiraWorld countries compete against each other in order to become more influential agents in the economic and cultural spheres and to attract external audiences, mainly foreign investment. Therefore, like brands, that strive for the increasement of their success and value on the market, countries establish campaigns and communication strategies that, positively, promote them internationally. Nonetheless, there are countries which have more value than others, benefiting from a better perception and a higher popularity. As a result, countries, again, just as brands, need to arrange ways to share their best assets with their national and international consumers, in order to create authentic nation brands, which are linked to an idea of quality. But, this is not an easy task, given the fact that, usually, the countries with the biggest economies and cultural strength defeat the least strong national markets. The program Portugal Sou, whose goal is to lead Portuguese people into the buying of national products and/or services by highlighting their countryof-origin, seems to integrate such strategies, given the fact one of the program’s most desired goals is to create a Portuguese nation brand that can be directly perceived as a quality brand that national citizens, as consumers, can trust. This internship report proposes to analyse the existing relationship between the Portuguese consumers and the program Portugal Sou Eu. To accomplish that goal, a study-case on the Portuguese statal program was analysed in order to comprehend what national consumers think, generally, of Portuguese products and/or services and Portuguese products and/or services that are part of the program. Additionally, the casestudy intended to understand if the governmental initiative increases, or not, Portuguese consumers’ level of consumer ethnocentrism. On a broad overview, Portuguese consumers value national products and/or services, especially the items through which the country is more popular for, like the wine. Even though a large part of the country’s population is not aware of the existence of Portugal Sou Eu, consumers who know the program tend to value it. In what regards the impact Portugal Sou Eu has had on the levels of consumer ethnocentrism of the Portuguese, it is important to note that, despite the fact people are aware of the importance of selecting national products and/or services, they end up valuing other factors, namely the price, at the moment of purchase, since there are numerous foreign products which are cheaper than Portuguese options. This research is helpful to understand the current state of topics such as the CoO effect, consumer ethnocentrism, and nation branding, at an international scale, but mainly on Portugal, given the fact there are very few academic works that have crossed such themes with the goal of studying the program Portugal Sou Eu. Within this context, this internship report benefits from having a complete and well-developed literature that was later applied.
- A game of masks: the communicative performance of the portuguese populist far-rightPublication . Novais, Rui AlexandreThis chapter aims to unpack the game of masks involved in the stagecraft of the far-right populist communicative performance while building an image and messaging from the margins of the conventional political establishment to seek legitimization and integration in it. Indeed, an analysis ranging from the ground-laying phase of the Chega party to being established as the third political force in the country’s parliament reveals Ventura matching most of, if not all, far-right’s populist multidimensional content framing and indicators of communicative style. The repertoire of communicative performance also offers critical evidence of the chameleonic nature of both the ideational and performative populisms across different national contexts.
- Iron determination in natural waters using a synthesised 3-hydroxy-4-pyridione ligand in a newly developed microfluidic paper-based devicePublication . Aguiar, Juliana I. S.; Ribeiro, Susana O.; Leite, Andreia; Rangel, Maria; Rangel, António O. S. S.; Mesquita, Raquel B. R.This work describes the development of an iron sensor based on a microfluidic paper-based technique, to attain iron quantification in natural waters. A new water-soluble naphthalene-3-hydroxy-4-pyridione ligand was used as a colour reagent, as it formed an orange complex with iron. As a newly described ligand, several chemical and physical parameters, namely, the sample and reagent volumes and reagent concentrations, were studied related to the formation of the coloured complex. The microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) assembly, namely, the use of different types of filter paper and different numbers of layers, was developed to obtain the best performance. Under the optimal conditions, a linear correlation was obtained in the range of 0.25–2.00 mg/L of iron, with a minimum detectable value of 0.07 mg/L. The proposed μPAD method was validated by an analysis of the certified samples and by a comparison of the tested water samples with the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) results (RE < 10%). Then, the μPAD device was successfully applied to the determination of iron in tap water, well water, river water, and seawater, with no need for any prior sample pre-treatment; recovery studies were also performed (average = 100.3% with RSD = 4.2%).
- Equity valuation Davide Campari-Milano N.V.Publication . Pizzo, Lorenzo; Martins, José Carlos TudelaThis dissertation aims to determine the value of the equity of Campari, a leading company in the branded spirits industry. Among the set of valuation techniques presented, the FCFF version of the Discounted Cash Flow model resulted to be the most appropriate methodology to derive the price target for Campari. In addition, market multiples have been considered by focusing on forward P/E and forward EV/EBITDA. Furthermore, precedent transactions have been analysed in three different periods, highlighting the respective EV/EBITDA and EV/Sales. The resulting price target from the DCF is € 11.27 as of December 31st, 2022, which corresponds to a 10.9% upside potential compared to the closing price of € 10.16 as of 13 th December 2022. The buy recommendation is based on a solid growth and risk profile of the projected cash flows of the company. Given the challenging macroeconomic landscape, scenario analysis has been included to account for a slower recovery from the Ukraine crisis. In addition, sensitivity and Monte Carlo analyses have been incorporated to assess the elasticity of the result to changes in key inputs. The outcome suggests a wider price range between € 8.11 and € 15.63, which in 50.4% of the simulations corresponds to a buy recommendation. Lastly, the result and the main assumptions have been compared to an equity report issued by Bank of America.
- Thermosonication applied to kiwi peel: impact on nutritional and microbiological indicatorsPublication . Boghossian, Magali; Brassesco, María Emilia; Miller, Fátima A.; Silva, Cristina L. M.; Brandão, Teresa R. S.The peels of many fruits are rich sources of nutrients, although they are not commonly consumed. If they are properly decontaminated, they can be used as healthy food ingredients reducing food waste. The objective was to apply thermosonication processes to kiwi peel and evaluate the impact on Listeria innocua survival (a non-pathogenic surrogate of L. monocytogenes) and key nutrients and quality indicators: proteins, fibers, minerals (Ca, K, Mg, Na, and P), chlorophylls, and phenolic contents. Kiwi peels were artificially inoculated with L. innocua and thermal and thermosonication treatments were performed at 55 °C and 60 °C for 30 and 15 min maximum, respectively. Bacteria were enumerated through treatment time, and quality indicators were assessed before and at the end of treatments. A Weibull model with a decimal reduction time (D-value) was successfully used in L. innocua survival data fits. Results showed that coupling temperature to ultrasound had a synergistic effect on bacteria inactivation with significant decreases in D-values. Thermosonication at 60 °C was the most effective in terms of protein, fiber, chlorophylls, and phenolics retention. Minerals were not significantly affected by all treatments. Applying thermosonication to kiwi peel was more effective for decontamination than thermal treatments at the same temperature while allowing the retention of healthy compounds.
- What women want : an introductory exploration into choice of female healthcare servicesPublication . O'Dwyer, Olivia Marguerite; Jacinto, SofiaThere has been a recent increase in female healthcare applications, but limited research on factors governing their use and comparative studies with physical clinics. This study aims to analyse the effect of psychological distance and social identity on attitudes to female healthcare services. We compare in-person consultations (offline service) with menstrual-tracking apps (online service). In Study A we distinguish between health service delivery modalities1 as online or offline. We compare the effect of psychological distance from the health service on social proximity, perceived likelihood of fitting the described scenario and construal level. In Study B we manipulate the health service and social identity of the doctors to measure how these impact help-seeking, goal setting and social distance in black women. Study A results suggest that higher distance from the health service leads to decreased social proximity and perceived likelihood of the situation, but no change in construal level. In Study B we found that shared social identity and face-to-face health service increases help-seeking behaviour and decreases social distance but has no effect on the abstraction of goals. We suggest that there is a need for higher availability of face-to-face health services and for mechanisms to increase help-seeking through mobile apps in female healthcare.
- Practices of cultural democracy : the Cultura Viva program in BrazilPublication . Moreira, João Fernandes da Luz; Martins, Adriana Alves de PaulaDespite the socio-economic crisis Brazil has experienced since 2014 and that has been considerably deepened by political instability in a polarized scenario, in 2022 the cultural area resists. The sector has confronted a deliberate dismantlement in the last two governments, Michel Temer's (2016-2018) and, since 2019, Jair Bolsonaro’s. On the other hand, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s mandates (2003-2010) represented in Brazilian contemporary history a radical paradigmatic shift to the approach to culture from a political and ideological perspective, as culture was a crucial aspect for fostering social equality and economic development, besides its role for overcoming social exclusion. In other words, culture was transformed into one of the main pillars of Brazilian identity's construction and preservation (Lula da Silva 2003). Twelve years after the end of Lula's government, this research examines practices of cultural democracy during his two mandates through the analysis of the National Plan of Culture and of the National System of Culture. Special attention is given to the Cultura Viva program and its pontos de cultura, understood as the most significant governmental initiative to expand and democratize the access to culture, especially in terms of its production. Bearing in mind the political disruption and the dismantlement of the cultural-artistic sector in the last two governments, this dissertation aims at evaluating Lula’s practices of cultural democracy and the legacy of Cultura Viva.
