- The influence of consumer personality on sustainable consumption intention in respect of clothing witheco-labelson the german marketPublication . Hummel, Tanja; Mendonça, CristinaThe use of eco-labels in the fashion industry has been in the focus of science and practice for several years due to the increasing sustainable awareness of society and the significant contri-bution to global environmental pollution of this industry. However, it is still unclear how com-panies can use these labels in a target group-specific way. This dissertation investigates the influence of consumers’ personality traits on their preference for purchasing eco-labelled cloth-ing in the German market. For this purpose, the preference of eco-labels is measured using a choice experiment together with the moderation of the big five personality traits. The results from applied t-tests and repeated measure ANCOVAs (N = 129) indicate that there is a signif-icant preference for eco-labels when consumers choose between clothes with eco-labels and no labels. Moreover, this preference is still present for equally priced products with eco-labels and labels with the term sustainability. Furthermore, it could be examined that only the personality trait openness has a significant influence on the preference for eco-labelled clothing when peo-ple have the choice between eco-labels and no label. This preference is even present among open-minded people when they have the choice between clothing with eco-labels having a sus-tainable price surcharge and a label with the term sustainability. Therefore, companies should focus on open-minded people to encourage them to demand eco-labeled clothing.
- Is peer-to-peer electricity trading driving a second wave of disruption for incumbent german utilities?Publication . von Westphalen, August Bernhard Albrecht Franziskus Graf; Rajsingh, PeterThe German energy market is facing an ongoing paradigm shift. As a result, incumbent utilities have experienced a first wave of disruption in the form of proliferation of renewable energy. Increasing decentralisation and digitalisation of the electricity sector is now giving rise to new and innovative business models like peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading. This allows consumers with distributed energy resources (DERs) to directly trade and share electricity with each other, eliminating the need for intermediary actors and placing the traditional incumbent business model under pressure. This paper analyses whether the P2P business model could potentially drive a second wave of disruption. To underpin this analysis, eleven expert interviews are conducted, and the results critically analysed. The findings indicated that P2P trading is unlikely to be powerful enough to drive a second wave of disruption and continues to be a niche product with limited scalability, at least for now. Implementational hurdles like restrictive regulation and conventional infrastructure are holding back its full market potential. German utilities, slow to adapt their business models away from traditional generation, should be concerned about such a platform-based business models, but equally not fear imminent disruption.
- How would knowing/not knowing the asymmetrically dominated effect influence the experience of purchase? : examining the hedonism purchasers get after falling/not falling prey to the asymmetric dominance effect in online and offline situationsPublication . Sedighi, Reza; Braga, João NizaThe asymmetrically dominated effect (more commonly known as the decoy effect) has been used by marketeers to steer purchasers towards a specific offering in a choice set and to make them believe that they have made the best decision. This study examines the decoy effect from the purchasers' perspective and investigates how much pleasure they derive from choosing a particular offer when making a decoy-affected purchase. Since there has been an exceeding increase in the frequency of online purchases in recent years, hedonism gained from a decoy-affected purchase is measured and compared in both offline and online contexts. The results from the study illustrate that giving people a revision chance on their decision and giving them knowledge about the decoy effect might not lead to a change in their decision in a decoy-affected purchase, but they do have a significant impact on the hedonic gain from the purchase. It was also found that although there is not a vital difference in the hedonic gain between offline and online purchases, manipulation of the knowledge of the decoy effect is more robust in offline purchases. These insights can help marketing practitioners improve their marketing strategies to increase customer satisfaction and sales.
- How does information technology influence the behavior intention to use nutrition e-Health services?Publication . Lourenço, Madalena Reinas de Sá; Jacinto, SofiaCovid-19 is an enable factor of new e-Health technology data-driven services which catalyzes the development of virtual personalized people-driven and preventive digital services model integrated into daily life. The access to individuals’ data provides solutions that ensure the safest health information technology. However, people still feel their data is at risk. The present paper aims to examine the key factors affecting health information technology as a strategy to improve the usage of smart nutrition services in the online environment. The study was conducted to assess the impact of IT towards storing and sharing individuals` health data and influencing their judgments about trust and behavioral intention to use e-Health apps in comparison with face-to-face consultation services. The technology acceptance model has been extended by introducing new factors (perceived risk, security, data privacy and behavioral intention to use the service) that allow to study the online consumer behavior and perceived threat associated with the type of data stored and shared. Findings revealed that health IT increased consumers` perceptions about perceived risk of data sharing and trust regarding the type of data stored and shared. However, it decreased consumers `perceptions about e-Health nutrition services related to perceived utility, data safety, trust, risk and behavioral intention to use these services. This research will help to empirically explore and test the suggested model in terms of social influence factors and the acceptance of using technology on health services in an emerging research area.
- Running app’s decision-making factors : the impact of branding on the digital worldPublication . Gonçalves, Duarte Maria Ferreira Saraiva Pinto; Braga, João NizaDue to the pandemic situation we are living in, people started running more, as it was one of the few ways they could leave their houses. As people started to add this to their routines, also started monitoring each run with a mobile application. When choosing this app, people were expected to choose and to use the most known apps, related to sports brands, mostly free, as there are a lot of different apps in the market. This dissertation aims to identify what are the factors that lead people to choose, for running, one app over the enormous amount of apps in the digital world. An online survey was run, involving 123 participants ready to help understand this problem. By giving participants different types of brands and reviews, and distinct prices, it had the purpose to understand the impact these features have on people’s choices, as these are some of the main variables for apps’ decision-making. The study showed that participants chose the brand over reviews, independently of the price given. People mainly wanted sports brands, as these are more related to the topic of study – running. When a good app with a different brand was purposed, people tended not to choose it, as there was always an app with a brand that was more trusted and more related to the topic of study.
- Luck vs. skill : looking at determinants of success through the lens of footballPublication . Riepel, Pascal; Rajsingh, PeterThe game of football is experiencing significant changes in the way clubs operate as well as how the game is played. These developments impact the way clubs and players thrive in their quest to achieve success and greatness. Two of the most important components for achieving success are luck and skill. This dissertation examines the influences luck and skill have on the success of clubs and also on players. As even less skilled teams became more competitive over time, football is often a game of small margins. To make the best decision in these moments, you need either a higher level of skill or a little luck. Based on qualitative research in form of expert interviews, together with in-depth analysis of current academic literature, there seems to be a strong indication that a high level of skill will often be successful over the medium and long term, however it will not be able to guarantee success in the short term. That is where the component of luck comes into the picture. Due to generally better conditions (better players and coaching education, data availability, organizational structures, greater professionalism) especially for smaller clubs, matches are won by smaller margins. All of this suggests that there is currently a larger pool of mid-talented players, resulting from a narrowing skill gap. On the other hand, highly talented players are increasing and experts expect this number to continue to rise in the future.
- Be yourself, it matters what they say : investor reaction to corporations condemning the U.S. Capitol RiotPublication . Heinhold, Felix Harald; El Nayal, OmarPurpose: Stakeholders exert increasing pressure on firms to speak up on controversial sociopolitical issues, thus engaging in Corporate Sociopolitical Activism (CSA). Previous research on the financial consequences of firms taking positions on polarizing issues is scarce and inconsistent. Therefore, this study analyzes the investor reaction to firms engaging in CSA by condemning the U.S. Capitol Riot. A particular focus lies on the moderating effect of the engagement’s perceived authenticity. Methodology: An event study was run on a sample of 158 firm-statements given by components of the S&P 500 in the aftermath of the U.S. Capitol Riot in early 2021. The cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) obtained in the event study served as the dependent variable for several multiple regression models used to analyze the moderating effect of the statements’ perceived authenticity. The perceived authenticity is reflected in the firm’s organizational ideology, the message’s content, and the firm’s previous engagements in CSA. Findings: We find marginal evidence to confirm the positive effect of condemning the U.S. Capitol Riot on firm value. The results further suggest that a liberal organizational ideology and making a substantive statement positively affect the investor reaction. Building on stakeholder theory, this phenomenon can be explained by considering CSA as a means for firms to signal the alignment of their values with those of their stakeholders, leading to competitive advantage. Originality: This paper advances the literature of nonmarket strategy and particularly contributes to the research on CSA by analyzing the investor reaction to firms condemning the U.S. Capitol Riot.
