- Using artificial intelligence to create paintings : how type of artist impacts WTP through emotional intelligence and perceived qualityPublication . Guerreiro, Rute Inês Camacho; Almeida, Filipa deIt is known that technological development continuously contributes to making people's lives more efficient. In particular, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted many different fields including medicine, transportation, public security, telecommunications, and so on. This dissertation addresses the influence of artificial intelligence in the field of art. More specifically, it aims to test how the type of artist (human vs. algorithm/robot) impacts willingness to pay through emotional intelligence and perceived quality. AI agents are perceived as beings without emotional intelligence and, as the art creation process is linked to the expression of emotions, people tend to think that these systems are not as capable of creating works of art as humans. On the other hand, AI-made artworks have been valued in the art auctions of renowned museums in recent years. Thus, it is interesting to understand how consumers evaluate the AI art, as it might revolutionize the art world in the future. The results of this study did not support expectations, however, they are a good starting point for future research on this topic.
- Do credit rating changes affect equity issuance/repurchase? : case study of the US marketPublication . Laginha, Raquel Guerreiro; Meira, MárioThis dissertation analyses the relation between credit rating changes and equity Issuance or Repurchase. I consider two types of credit rating changes: Upgrades and Downgrades. To conduct this study the data used comprises the period between 1985 and 2016, in which I assume a lag of one month for the data to be incorporated into credit rating changes. To assess the relation between Issuance and Repurchase, I use a set of control variables and assess them in light of three different models: Linear, PROBIT and LOGIT. The results suggest that firms react more to Upgrades than Downgrades. In the Speculative Grade sub-sample, I find weaker empirical evidence of this relation, especially within the Repurchase scenario.
- Actinobacteria isolated from wastewater treatment plants located in the east-north of Algeria able to degrade pesticidesPublication . Boufercha, Oumeima; Moreira, Irina Sousa; Castro, Paula M. L.; Boudemagh, AllaoueddineThe pollution of water resources by pesticides poses serious problems for public health and the environment. In this study, Actinobacteria strains were isolated from three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and were screened for their ability to degrade 17 pesticide compounds. Preliminary screening of 13 of the isolates of Actinobacteria allowed the selection of 12 strains with potential for the degradation of nine different pesticides as sole carbon source, including aliette, for which there are no previous reports of biodegradation. Evaluation of the bacterial growth and degradation kinetics of the pesticides 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and thiamethoxam (tiam) by selected Actinobacteria strains was performed in liquid media. Strains Streptomyces sp. ML and Streptomyces sp. OV were able to degrade 45% of 2,4-DCP (50 mg/l) as the sole carbon source in 30 days and 84% of thiamethoxam (35 mg/l) in the presence of 10 mM of glucose in 18 days. The biodegradation of thiamethoxam by Actinobacteria strains was reported for the first time in this study. These strains are promising for use in bioremediation of ecosystems polluted by this type of pesticides.
- Volume flexibility at responsive suppliers in reshoring decisions: analysis of a dual sourcing inventory modelPublication . Gijsbrechts, Joren; Boute, Robert N.; Disney, Stephen M.; Mieghem, Jan A. VanWe investigate how volume flexibility, defined by a sourcing cost premium beyond a base capacity, at a local responsive supplier impacts the decision to reshore supply. The buyer also has access to a remote supplier that is cheaper with no restrictions on volume flexibility. We show that with unit lead time difference between both suppliers, the optimal dual sourcing policy is a modified dual base-stock policy with three base-stock levels 𝑆𝑓1, 𝑆𝑓2, and 𝑆𝑠. The replenishment orders are generated by first placing a base order from the fast supplier of at most 𝑘 units to raise the inventory position to 𝑆𝑓1, if that is possible. After this base order, if the adjusted inventory position is still below 𝑆𝑓2, additional units are ordered from the fast supplier at an overtime premium to reach 𝑆𝑓2. Finally, if the adjusted inventory position is below 𝑆𝑠, an order from the slow supplier is placed to bring the final inventory position to 𝑆𝑠. Surprisingly, in contrast to single sourcing with limited volume flexibility, a more complex dual sourcing model often results in a “simpler” policy that replaces demand in each period. The latter allows analytical insights into the sourcing split between the responsive and the remote supplier. Our analysis shows how increased volume flexibility at the responsive supplier promotes the decision to reshore operations and effectively serves as a cost benefit. It also shows how investing in base capacity or additional volume flexibility act as strategic substitutes.

- The effect of credit rating changes on firms’ leverage : US firms between 2009 and 2017Publication . Benzarti, Mohamed Youssef; Meira, MárioThis dissertation examines the effect of a change in credit rating on firm’s Leverage decisions. I find that firms tend to undertake strong capital market activities immediately after the 2008 financial crisis, by reducing their issuance of debt in the aftermath of a downgrade. I also find that firms with higher credit ratings have less debt and more equity when compared to firms that have lower credit ratings. Firms issue approximately less 3 percentage points of debt following a downgrade, whereas upgraded firms issue more debt, following the change in their credit rating.
- The future of work in management consulting : managerial recommendations on automation, employee development, and managing changePublication . Schneider, Lennard Axel; Almeida, Filipa deThe management consulting industry is known for its role as an innovation catalyst and change facilitator in transformational client projects. As disruptive forces impact the advice-giving industry, consulting companies are finding themselves in the need of transformation to remain competitive. This interdisciplinary study addresses current business challenges such as artificial intelligence, the need for skills, and the shortage of top talent. It investigates the current state of digital transformation while highlighting the potentials and risks of emerging technologies. The study capitalizes on the perspective of management consulting professionals (N = 116) and provides thousands of ratings for the automatability and desirability of automation at the work activity level. To the researcher's knowledge, it is the first study to investigate the desire for work automation and the technological automation potential in management consulting. The analysis exhibits that the desire for automation exceeds the perceived technical automation possibilities. The Automatability-Desirability Waves enable a prioritized approach to building a roadmap for AI. Addressing the elements of competitive advantage, recommendations for implementation and change management are developed to support leadership teams in global management consulting firms.
