Cabral, Maria de JesusEugénio de Castro’s nineteenth-century work is ambiguously related to the dramatic genre, in interesting affinity and in tune with the interior dimension’s tragic, theorized and practiced by the best authors of the French-speaking symbolist mêlée. Privileging the work with the verbal material, crossing boundaries between literary and expression modes, with a unique refusal of extra-artistic dictates, Castro’s tragic way launches stimulating challenges and promises to the symbolist theater that emerges and unfolds in the Portuguese literary field throughout the 20th century. I am interested in this article to delve into this sui speciei tragic configuration, both in the Belkiss’s dramatic poem by and in the lyric fiction of Oaristos, whose heroines reflect the fundamental aesthetic and ethical non-conformity of the Poet. Because neither artistic individualism nor eclecticism are enough to overcome the deepest enigma of existence.
- Adaptive strategies in crisis : the case of ESN LisboaPublication . Coelho, Inês Oliveira; Cardeal, Nuno César de Jesus GuerraThe following thesis, presented in the form of a case study, focuses on the example of ESN Lisboa, a non-profit student organization that supports Erasmus students in their integration into the academic and social life in Lisbon. Due to the Covid-19, the association witnessed a fall of its target audience and faced the impossibility of operating as before. The case study tells the story of how the organization adapted and the strategic decisions made throughout the pandemic. This case study works as a teaching instrument for students to apply theoretical methodologies in a real organizational scenario. First, some theoretical concepts are presented, which will afterwards lead the understanding of the case study. The information in the case study was gathered through interviews with several volunteers in the organization, internal documents, and online sources. The case study, together with the resolution notes, explores the adaptations and the strategic motivations of ESN Lisboa while encouraging students to understand the context and obstacles faced. It analyses the organization, questioning its purpose and stakeholders’ orientation, and the external forces, while challenging the decisions made.
- Parent firm : baby venture relationship in the Corporate Venture Capital activity : firm structure and environment as contingenciesPublication . Middendorf, Tillmann; Shuwaikh, Fátima HussienThe steady growth of Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) activities demonstrates the importance for companies to continuously create innovations to sustain and increase competitive advantages. Gaining access to external sources of knowledge from entrepreneurial initiatives by using CVC investments compliments the internal R&D sourcing. Focusing on U.S listed parent firms of CVC units, this dissertation explores the impact of industry and firm-specific factors on CVC investment activity in high technology industries, as well as related effects on the company value. I employ a U.S American panel dataset for the period from 2000 to 2020 consisting of 2.678 firm-year observations. Using the aggregate count of investments conducted as CVC activity, I find that higher absorptive capacity leads to significantly higher CVC activity. Conversely, I cannot find a significant relationship between environmental munificence and CVC activity. Moreover, I present evidence that firms which pursue CVC activities experience value creation and find that that parent firm value increases among firms making CVC investments that are operationally diffuse and operate in high munificent environments as well as for firms with a concentrated operational structure in low munificent environments. This study illustrates that managers should be aware of these effects when deciding to invest in entrepreneurial ventures with the strategic intentions to source for innovations.

- The quest for value : examples of two portuguese SMEs in the agricultural sectorPublication . Madeira, António Daniel Caleiras; Cardeal, Nuno César de Jesus GuerraThe aim of this dissertation is to understand how two Portuguese SMEs in the agricultural sector, Adega Cooperativa Vidigueira, Cuba e Alvito (ACVCA) and Herdade Maria da Guarda (HMG), were able to internationalize their products and brands. Such analysis will explore the strategies deployed by both companies to enter new foreign markets and verify if their resources and capabilities could potentially enable them to create and sustain a Competitive Advantage internationally. It was possible to conclude that in the case of ACVCA their extensive history in winemaking and their deep regional ties have generated both resources that are mutually reinforcing, their product authenticity and winemaking knowledge, and those lay the foundations for a potential achievement of a sustainable Competitive Advantage internationally. For HMG, their scale of operations and process automation/innovation enabled them to increase their overall efficiency and effectiveness allowing them to face large scale competitors and to potentially establish their brand internationally. Ultimately both firms have engaged in internationalization strategies that are typical of companies with reduced internalization experience and limited capacity to differentiate their product. However, their internationalization endeavours will lead them to gain the knowledge and understanding on the next steps needed to be taken in order to adapt and differentiate their offerings abroad.

- Kia Corporation´s equity valuationPublication . Vörös, Miklós Sándor; Assunção, António Luís Traça Borges de; Martins, José Carlos TudelaThis dissertation presents an equity valuation of a South Korean automotive company, Kia Corporation. The company has recently gone through a brand relaunch and has started to implement its new mid-to long term strategy, called ‘Plan S’, which aims to establish a leadership position in the automotive industry. The goal of the valuation is to determine Kia’s fair share price and provide a buy, hold, or sell recommendation as of the 30th of April 2021. To justify the assumptions, an overview of Kia Corporation is presented, as well as a sector outlook and a macroeconomic outlook, including the company’s main risks and opportunities. All considered, Kia has a huge potential, however, it is not yet reflected in its share price. In the valuation process, three different methods are applied: The Discounted Cash Flow Model (DCF), the Dividend Discount Model (DDM), and the Relative Valuation. To arrive at the final target share price, a weighted average is used, with 90% allocated to DCF, 0% to DDM, and 10% to Relative Valuation. As a result, the fair share price is 120,455 KRW which shows a 56% upside compared to its current share price of 77,000 KRW. Consequently, my recommendation for Kia Corporation is a strong buy.
- Implementation of the repairability index in the smartphone industry : an analysis on willingness to pay, perceived quality and purchase intentionPublication . Reischl, Ricarda Maria; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusSmartphones are important means of communication that are rapidly advancing in technology. Its rather short replacement cycles continue to drive a growing volume of electronic waste. The introduction of a Repairability Index, which provides information on the reparability of an electrical device, is an attempt to extend useful life. By influencing consumers' purchase decisions, pressure is built up on manufacturers to enable their equipment to be repaired more cost-effectively and to provide replacement parts. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the Repairability Index on consumers' Willingness to Pay, Perceived Quality, and Purchase Intention. The importance of repairability is examined in the context of customer-preferred smartphone features to control for interaction effects. In a qualitative preliminary study, these preferred features were identified. Then, the main study was conducted using an experimental approach in which participants were presented with a manipulated smartphone advertisement. The results show that the Repairability Index influenced consumer purchase behavior by exerting a positive effect on Willingness to Pay and Perceived Quality. However, no effect was found on the overall Purchase Intention. This result is independent of age and gender, but stronger among individuals with high environmental awareness. Attitudes towards repair reinforced the effect of repairability on Perceived Quality. No interaction effect could be found between repairability and preferred features, however, preferred smartphone features revealed a great importance on all three variables in the experiment and therefore managers should not neglect them.
