- Asset-backed securitization and systematic risk in U.S. commercial banks : an empirical analysisPublication . Caseiro, João Pedro Lopes Azevedo Soares; Bhimjee, Diptes Chandrakante PrabhudasThe present Dissertation evaluates the impact of Asset-Backed Securities (A.B.S.) on the largest U.S. commercial banks during the subsequent stage of the U.S. business cycle in the aftermath of the U.S. ‘Subprime’ crisis. This analysis covers the 14 largest U.S. commercial banks during the period of September 2009 through December 2018. The followed approach regresses the total risk from each bank, measured as total excess equity returns’ volatility, on both systematic and unsystematic risk, while controlling for size, leverage, and macroeconomic effects. This research presents new empirical evidence on the effects of securitization on systematic risk, given there is no consensus amongst the scientific literature concerning these effects. This Dissertation’s findings suggest that asset-backed securitization and banks’ systematic risk are negatively correlated for the period and bank sample considered. Moreover, this research produces robust results replicable to distinct timespans and adjusted samples. Finally, no evidence is found of asset-backed securitization (excluding mortgage-backed securitization) positively affecting banks’ unsystematic risk.
- Influence of celebrity endorsement on brand loyalty for sneaker brands : the case of adidas Peru in Lima TopPublication . Salgado, María Rosa Kcomt; Sousa, Maria Francisca de Saldanha eNowadays, relationships with brands are becoming more meaningful for consumers. To keep up with the fast-paced environment and differentiate themselves from competitors, brands are relying on well-known individuals to form a stronger bond with their target audiences. Celebrity endorsement is a marketing tool used by sneakers brands to gain proximity to their audience and strengthen their brand loyalty. This dissertation aims to evaluate if celebrity endorsement, through the lens of the Source Credibility Model (endorser credibility), positively affects brand loyalty; and if endorser-brand fit has a moderating effect on the relationship. These relationships are examined in the understudied context of Peru. Through an online questionnaire, data from 168 Millennials in Lima Top was collected. Linear regression results indicate that celebrity endorsement has a significant positive effect on brand loyalty. Moderation results indicate that this relationship becomes more positive the more consumers perceive good congruence between endorser and brand (i.e., high endorser-brand fit). The celebrity chosen had no significant effect on the relationship. As general note, it is important for marketeers to find the right match when selecting celebrities to endorse sneakers brands, since this can increase a campaign’s effectiveness. This research provides empirical support for the proposed theoretical model in the Peruvian context, thereby contributing to enrich existing literature on the topic. Future research could follow up on the present study by assessing if the respondent’s gender impacts consumers’ perceptions of endorsers.
- BANANIKA® : a sustainable, carbonized, alcoholic banana brew : a market segmentation and viability study for the social startup BananikaPublication . Biermann, Leon Ulrich; Lino, Rute Sofia Barbosa XavierThis study accesses how to successfully set up a sustainable business for a fermented drink made from banana waste, namely Bananika, in the Portuguese alcoholic beverage market. It attempts to identify the target group of this innovative beverage as base for the development of an effective marketing campaign. Furthermore, this paper is examining if Bananika is an economically viable startup. Given those objectives three critical dimensions have been identified and analyzed. For the first dimension a market segmentation has been executed. The segmentation was based on a survey that was conducted in order to analyze and distinguish the Portuguese consumers according to their consumer habits of alcoholic beverages, price sensitivity, purchase intention, demographic and sociodemographic characteristics. With the help of a cluster analysis the consumers were then divided in to 4 different groups. This market segmentation is then followed by a Marketing Mix based on the previously identified target group. The second dimension tried to analyze the strategic standpoint of Bananika in the highly competed Portuguese beverage industry. Therefore, an industry analysis has been performed that resulted in a positioning map. The analytical part of this paper then ends in the third dimension, the financial plan of the startup. This was built in order to analyze the economic viability of Bananika.

- Transforming pediatric cancer carePublication . Magalhães, Helena Margarida Assis; Padre Eterno, Maria Inês dos Santos MendonçaThe purpose of this dissertation is to understand how innovation applied in medical devices and services can be used to positively impact the quality of life of pediatric cancer patients, survivors and families. Despite the disruption observed in the healthcare sector in recent decades, cancer still remains the leading cause of non-accidental death among children and adolescents. The treatments they are submitted to, although necessary for the cure, are responsible for sequelae and late effects associated with chronic diseases and second cancers. Semi-structured interviews and an online survey allowed to know this population and their current needs better. The results showed that therapies influence the quality of life of everyone involved in the process and that improvements are needed in oncology and pediatric hospitals, especially in the access to more efficient and good quality medical services and in infrastructures provided. Innovation can, therefore, play a fundamental role by allowing the creation of new and more personalized services. Appointments more adapted to the profile of each patient, focused on prevention and with a better management of the disease and the occurrence of late effects can lead to better clinical practices and an increase in the quality of life of participants.
- Are concentrated market structures beneficial for bank stability?Publication . Ferreira, Ana Cláudia Machado; Bhimiee, Diptes Chandrakante PrabhudasThe present Dissertation investigates the impact of market structure on bank stability for the U.S. commercial banks, from the last quarter of 2001 to the last quarter of 2017. The empirical analysis employs a fixed effects panel data model to address this Dissertation’s research question. The dependent variable is bank stability assessed by the natural logarithm of the Z-Score, while the explanatory variable to assess market structure is loan concentration at the state level, determined by either the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index or the three-bank concentration ratio. A matrix of control variables, including both bank-specific and macroeconomic variables, is included in the empirical framework. The empirical results support the concentration fragility view, which states that banks operating in more concentrated market structures are less stable. The results hold under a series of robustness tests. The stability of the results under diverse stress conditions suggests that regulators and policymakers must pay close attention to the market structure in which commercial banks operate when regulating banks and creating policy guidelines, namely for mergers and acquisitions
- Positive and negative effects of CSR : the case of disabled workers integration in the portuguese contextPublication . Barreto, Maria de Sacadura Botte Salvação; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusCorporate Social Responsibility ability to respond to environmental and social problems is beneficial in different ways. The integration of People with Disability (PwD) in the workforce is one expression of CSR that can have important positive impacts. However, little is known about the specific impacts of the colleagues responsible for the integration and supervision of PwD. This is the major objective of this research. Two studies, based on a survey and individual interviews, provide some initial evidence on this matter. We found that in Portugal the inclusion of PwD is considered positive. Thought, it is a process held informally my companies, where stigmas and mistrust concerning the ability of these individuals to perform the job, can still be found. The results also show that experience, sensibilization, and preparation are the key to promote better and impactful integration. The insufficient awareness regarding disability suggests a collective and global effort, led by governments and organizations, that should alert and incentivize a whole nation to break this social barrier and turn it into opportunities. Well-structured and implemented inclusive programs can easily create win-win situations. By promoting all their employees’ engagement and potential, organizations will enhance individual and collective results, levering its differentiation, and competitiveness. We argue that the inclusion of PwD is an HR initiative valuable for any organization and indispensable for social progress.
- CSR and perceived price fairness : an analysis on willingness to pay and perceived benefitPublication . Eusébio, Eduardo Marques; Moreira, Sérgio Paulo de JesusThe objective of this study is to assess the potential effect that engagement in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) may have on consumers’ Perceived Price Fairness. Following the literature that already developed on this topic, the study approaches the knowledge gap in the field by, simultaneously, considering Willingness to Pay, here measured using the Price Sensitivity Meter by Van Westendorp (1976) and Perceived Benefit of active CSR engagement. The study followed an experimental approach via an online survey, concerning three types of products and two social causes supported by CSR engagement. To gather insights, the study follows the Price Sensitivity Meter framework to measure different pricing options and strategies for products from firms who actively engage in CSR. The results point put that to two of the three products under analysis make for increased Willingness to Pay. On all cases, respondents pointed out an increase in added perceived benefit when faced with CSR activities. On the two cases where a positive effect was registered, consumers’ Perceived Benefit increase outmeasured the growth in Willingness to Pay, making a case that CSR engagement indeed provides for an increase in Perceived Price Fairness. In one of the cases. Consumers recognized an increase on Perceived Benefit but their Willingness to Pay followed an opposite direction.
- Diversification and Size on U.S. Bank Holding Companies and Commercial Banks : are big banks too big to fail?Publication . Cunha, Miguel Ângelo Gomes da; Bhimjee, Diptes Chandrakante PrabhudasThe present Dissertation’s academic research question addresses the impact that diversification and size have on the financial stability of U.S. Bank Holding Companies (BHCs) and Commercial Banks for the 2002-2016 period. The bank yearly data was extracted from OSIRIS-Bureau van Dijk, while the macro variables were extracted from the Trading Economics website. In order to address the proposed research question, a baseline model, consisting on a random effects model including time fixed effects and clusters, was created with the dependent variables being the standard deviation of ROA and the Distance-to-Default, both serving as proxies for banks’ financial stability. Furthermore, the present Dissertation controls for the time periods before, during and after the U.S. Subprime Financial Crisis. In general, the findings confirm that appropriate levels of diversification improve the financial stability of BHCs and Commercial Banks, however, after a given threshold diversification deteriorates banks’ financial stability. Moreover, it is also confirmed that increases in the size of Commercial Banks lead to increases in banks’ financial stability, nonetheless, after a given threshold further increases in size deteriorates banks’ financial stability. Surprisingly, concerning BHCs, increases in size lead to decreases in banks’ financial stability, while, after a given threshold, further increases in size promote banks’ financial stability. The present Dissertation looks at this last relationship as a possible confirmation of the “Too-Big-to-Fail” issue, that may have risen from the U.S. Subprime Financial Crisis. Lastly, robustness analysis conducted confirm the previous findings.
