- Managing a social (ir)responsibility crisis : the case of Ferrero and the palm oil issuePublication . Fornelli, Chiara; Versari, PietroCrisis management communication represents a challenging concern for today’s organizations. A single episode of negative brand publicity can lead to crucial damages to the constituents, troubles for the entity, as well as threats to its reputation, leading it to their very existence end. Increasingly number of academics identify the brand reputational status as relevant influencer factor in all business’ aspects. Indeed, brand reputation is the base for all organizations to be successful. This thesis builds on the brand crisis management theories to analyze how Ferrero, one of the largest confectionary companies worldwide, faces and overcome the palm oil scandals, which recently represented its greater threat, improving both profits and reputation. Moreover, this work can be applied as a managerial case study in classes such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Business Ethics, Crisis Management Communication, Management Consulting. Along this thesis, some crisis characteristics and consumers’ reactions are analyzed, as well as the major strategic crisis responses, thanks to an accurate Literature Review. After pursuing a qualitative research on Ferrero, I identify the main reasons why the company could successfully overcome the crisis. Finally, some alternative response solutions are explored.
- Blockchain for humanitarian aidPublication . Kustak, Tom; Ramus, TommasoBlockchain technology has proven to be an effective tool to increase performance in for-profit supply chains. Yet, we lack deep understanding of its impact on the humanitarian supply chain. This thesis aims at addressing this gap through a qualitative research. Evidence from expert interviews and secondary reports suggests that blockchain technology positively impacts the information and resource flow in humanitarian supply chains by either replacing traditional intermediaries or enhancing transparency. It further reveals that the impact on supply chain actors is very individual. Donors can particularly benefit from the increased transparency as this empowers them to track their donations. Humanitarian organizations can improve their internal efficiencies and enhance their collaboration with external stakeholders. For beneficiaries, blockchain technology offers a new infrastructure to access humanitarian services which are more dignified and empowering. The empirical findings of this thesis enhance our general understanding of blockchain technology in the humanitarian sector. Furthermore, this research provides concrete strategies for humanitarian organizations to leverage the full potential of blockchain technology. Thus, it is of particular relevance for humanitarians aiming to address current challenges in the humanitarian supply chain.

- Netnography on wine researching : consumer attitudes towards wine consumption on social mediaPublication . Negra, Lilia; Oliveira, Pedro Luís Lopes deThe purpose of this dissertation is to uncover digital consumer insights within the wine community in regards of what motivates them to drink wine and to join an online wine community. The study uses a qualitative approach called Netnography to study online behaviours and has selected the online wine community “Wine Folly” to examine its digital content. The current research on online behaviour in regards of wine consumption is quite limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine feelings expressed towards wine consumption, motivations to join Wine Folly and perceptions members reveal towards the online wine community and wine. Results of the research indicate that there a level of confusion that distorts people’s choices when purchasing wine. Those who are less knowledgeable on the subject have expressed their interest in joining online wine communities for intellectual satisfaction. While some are interested in sharing information, others are more interested in developing relationships or seek social support from the community. These members wish to share their frustrations and challenges faced but also their experiences with the others, creating bonds along the way. Moreover, results show that members of the group had different perceptions in regards to wine consumption as they have developed different meanings and attitudes. For example, a perception of wine being a healthier lifestyle choice. Furthermore, the study highlights the implications and draws conclusions from the findings, offering strategic managerial recommendations. In addition, the research acknowledges its own limitations.

- The screen behind the field : a netnographic study of Manchester United Fans and their perceptions of the clubPublication . Nielsen, Daniel; Oliveira, Pedro Luís Lopes deThis dissertation aims to take a deeper look into the online interactions of Manchester United supporters. A netnographic approach is utilized in order to understand what perception these fans have with regards to the club. Some negative perceptions were observed to represent concerns to supporters. The dissertation also addresses who the main stakeholders of these concerns are. Data gathered online from two supporter forums were analyzed using a qualitative thematic approach. The results indicate that the main concerns of these supporters are related to their perceptions on ownership, performance, sponsorships and merchandise. This dissertation discusses the implications of researching the perceptions of football fans within their online communities. The results suggest that the fans show dismay with a current sponsor and with a lack of ownership on the fans’ side. Managers and stakeholders are encouraged to ‘listen’ to these supporters and engage with them in co-creative and collaborative roles in hopes that this behavior will profit the stakeholders in the long-term.
- Macroeconomic and bank-specific determinants of non-performing loans : an empirical investigationPublication . Pirozzi, Angelo; Sousa, João Carlos Brogueira deIn this study, I worked to identify factors influencing banks’ non-performing loans (NPLs) in Europe, and then I evaluate if those determinants vary with the gross national income level of countries. I analysed a panel of 39 countries in Europe, from the period between 1998 and 2017, looking both at macroeconomic and bank-specific variables. I estimate two different models, a static panel model and a dynamic one. Besides, for both models, I consider for the estimation also two subsamples representing Low and High-Income countries. The results I found under the first econometrics model with fixed-effect estimation largely agree with the existing literature, as for a macroeconomic perspective, GDP growth rate, Unemployment, Remittances, and Public Debt are found to exert a significant influence on NPLs. At the same time, from a bank-specific perspective, both ROE, credit to deposit ratio and the concentration of the bank industry can be considered as factors affecting NPLs. Then, I apply one-step difference GMM using the Arellano-Bond estimator to solve the problem of endogeneity concerning the lagged variable of NPLs used as a regressor. Consequently, variables such as Public Debt and banking system concentration turn out to be not significant, thus, implying that most of the variability of the dependent variable is explained from its past. In addition, differences between low and high-income countries are found: the significance of macroeconomic and bank-specific variables varies according to the economic condition of a country, suggesting that the vulnerability of the banking system relies on different characteristics.
