- Fighting childhood cancer and the innovative project of the Princess Maxima Centre for Paediatric OncologyPublication . Bandeira, Matilde Sá da; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesCancer is one of the most feared diagnoses for the present generations. Yet, for a parent more than for anyone else, knowing that their child has got cancer can be devastating. Childhood cancer is intense and consuming for all people involved, and its physical and psychological consequences are difficult to evaluate. This dissertation aims to understand the main challenges of paediatric cancer, and explore a possible solution to address some of them with a case study: The Princess Maxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology, the Netherlands. To better contextualize the opening of this Centre, a review of literature was conducted to understand the dimension, costs and most important challenges faced by all stakeholders involved. In fact, the project for the Princess Maxima Centre is the Netherlands’ response to some of these challenges. By concentrating all professionals dedicated to this cause, childhood cancer patients and their families in one single building, the Centre aims to cure all children with cancer in the country, but also to make their lives easier. Children will be receiving the most appropriate care as a result of the Centre’s strategy, with particular attention to their natural development. Great accomplishments are expected by all professionals in virtue of the Centre’s environment and therefore better treatment solutions for their patients.
- Equity valuation using accounting numbers : valuation models in the banking context : empirical performance and analysis of Broker’s reportsPublication . Romeiro, Tomás Barbosa; Cerqueiro, Geraldo Manuel AlvesThis study investigates the performance of the Dividend Discount Model (DDM), the Residual Income Valuation Model (RIVM) and two multiples based valuation methods, Forward Price to Earnings (P/E) and Price to Book (P/B) ratios, when analysing bank equity. Additionally, the role of Other Comprehensive Income (OCI) in the difference between the outputs of the DDM and the RIVM is analysed as a possible cause of this difference. Although the sample is relatively small, OCI is not found to be the driver of the difference between the output of the aforementioned mentioned models. The analysis also concludes that the performance of Dividend Discount Model and the Residual Income Valuation Model is highly sensitive to the inputs used, especially growth rates. The second part of this study investigates the valuation methods used by analysts in bank valuation, compares the findings with what literature proposes and analyses if the period of the most recent financial crisis had any impact on the methods used by analysts. It finds that in their majority, analysts conform to what literature proposes and that there was a noticeable change in valuation models used during the 2006-2011 period. Although many of the reports do not provide clear explanations as to why this happened, the analysis tries to fit in-report information with the theoretical framework.
- Ultra Petroleum Corp. : equity valuationPublication . Neves, Carlos Tomásio Fernandes Lopes; Matins, José Carlos TudelaA sturdy equity valuation is the result of both strong theoretical foundations and practical awareness when modelling a company. By analysing the “state of the art” literature in valuation we select the Net Asset Value Model and the Multiples approach to value Ultra Petroleum, a leading independent energy company actively engaged in the exploration and production of shale oil and natural gas in North America. Supported by both methodologies, we conclude that Ultra is undervalued. Trading at $5.48 per share at the end of the 3rd quarter 2015, we present our investment thesis and “Buy” recommendation with a target price of $9.43, which is based on our probability weighted average of three scenarios. We compare our results with a Barclays equity research, which applies a multiple to forward year pre-interest cash flow to target Enterprise Value.
- Measuring risk-taking incentives in the U.S. retailing industry : the evolution of executive compensation schemes and how asset tangibility and digitalisation significantly affect the relationship of managerial incentives and risk-taking policy for retailersPublication . Almeida, José Jorge Alves de; Novotny-Farkas, Zoltan; Cerqueiro, Geraldo Manuel AlvesThis paper reveals the relationship between managerial compensation and firm risk-taking for retailers. Theory suggests that stock-option base payments produce incentives for managers to take on risky projects and adopt a risky investment policy, decreasing their risk aversion effect of delta. However, a change relatively to the nature of business or in the firm’s asset tangibility may affect the meaning of investment’s riskiness and consequently take an effect on managers’ risk-taking decisions. Over time, retailers have become more technological and therefore less tangible compared to traditional retailers that operate both online and offline. This paper extends previous literature by providing a more tractable understanding between the managerial incentives and risk-taking decisions across levels of asset tangibility by thoroughly analysing the evolution of technological versus traditional retailers in the U.S.

- JOBBID : a new online talent platform for the Portuguese market : assessing the interest of companies and candidatesPublication . Gonçalves, João Francisco Antunes; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesThe high unemployment levels, particularly on younger segments of the population, have become a pressing matter for the negative economic and social impact they are having in Portugal. With the growth of Internet adoption, as well as the positive impact online talent platforms can have over this issue, the aim of this dissertation is to understand the acceptance of both companies and candidates of a new recruitment/job search solution under the former category. The solution proposed here, JOBBID, is an online talent platform that works as an auction marketplace, where companies bid for a list of curated candidates that fit a certain job position. The platform addresses both students and professionals, focusing on the age range between 18-34, and its primary value proposition is to match the candidate with the job offer in the most efficient way. Starting with an extensive review of literature it was possible to obtain the underlying knowledge to both legitimate and conceptualize the platform. In order to validate this new solution an online survey was built for companies and candidates. Thereafter the results were analyzed. An adapted version of the Technology Acceptance Model of Davis (1989) was used to build a model for online talent platforms and the Intention to Use of the new solution was measured accordingly, when applicable. Moreover, a number of other topics, directly and indirectly, related with the platform were analyzed.
- Re-food : a Portuguese case study of a community-based enterprise creating social capital through food redistributionPublication . Anselmo, Laura Correia; Pinheiro, Susana Frazão Ferreira FernandesThis dissertation considers social entrepreneurship, particularly concepts of social value and social capital creation, by providing a case study of Re-food, a Portuguese independent non-profit organisation that takes excess food from its food partners and delivers it to people that need food assistance using its volunteers. Each Re-food centre operates at the level of a Portuguese parish and adopts a micro local model to serve its community. It analyses primary data obtained through the qualitative research method of semi-structured interviewing of Re-food’s partners, beneficiaries and volunteers, and other stakeholders, to provide triangulation and secondary (including unpublished) data supplied by the organisation. It considers three research questions: how a Re-food centre copes with variable food supply and demand; how Re-food finds people in need; and what Re-food does apart from providing food. The main findings are that Re-food faces several logistical issues and cannot achieve 100% food waste elimination (food); it creates social value through its work with its beneficiaries, including finding individuals from the “ashamed hunger” sector, fulfilling a basic social need, and allowing individuals to give time to help others (volunteers) and providing opportunity to express their social responsibility (partners). Re-food is found to be a Portuguese case study of a community-based enterprise creating social value by linking individuals and entities towards a common goal: the micro local elimination of food waste and hunger, thus creating social capital.
