- The impact of social media on business performancePublication . Martin, Smits; Serban, MogosSocial media are gaining popularity and are increasingly used in regular operations of many companies, including start-ups, small, medium-sized, and large organizations. The purpose of this research is to explore the impact of social media and to analyze to what extent social media have impact on organizational capabilities and business performance. We develop a research model and two simple propositions based on the resource based view of the firm. We analyze the impact of six social media applications on six business capabilities and on business performance in SponsorPay, a start-up company since 2009 in the on-line game advertising industry. We use a mixed research method including qualitative analysis based on interviews and quantitative analysis based on a survey among 60 employees. We find that the use of social media enhances business capabilities and business performance. The impact is not due to one (out of six) social media tools only, but due to successfully combining the six social media tools into one effective social media ecosystem that enables coordination between internal and external business processes.

- A convoy protection strategy using the moving path following methodPublication . Oliveira, Tiago; Aguiar, A. Pedro; Encarnação, PedroThis paper considers the problem of convoy protection missions using a fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in scenarios where the radius of the circular region of interest around the convoy is smaller than the UAV minimum turning radius. Using the Moving Path Following (MPF) method, we propose a guidance algorithmic strategy where a UAV moving at constant ground speed is required to converge to and follow a desired geometric moving path that is attached to the convoy center. Conditions under which the proposed strategy solves the convoy problem are derived. A performance metric that is proposed together with numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
- Discrimination and entrepreneurship: evidence from LGBT rights lawsPublication . Conti, Raffaele; Kacperczyk, Olenka; Valentini, GiovanniThis study revisits the well-established claim that reducing discrimination spurs entrepreneurial entry. We propose that the effect of antidiscrimination initiatives on entrepreneurship depends crucially on whether discrimination originates on the demand- or the supply-side of the entrepreneurial process. The benefits of antidiscrimination practices in the context of entry are based on the study of the demand-side discrimination, or bias which arises when prospective entrepreneurs face discrimination by key resource providers for a new venture (i.e., investors, banks, prospective employers). We hypothesize the opposite effect on the supply-side, or when prospective entrepreneurs face discrimination in paid employment. Using evidence from the enactment of LGBT antidiscrimination policies, we show that initiatives to reduce employer discrimination deter entry into entrepreneurship because they increase the appeal of paid employment relative to entrepreneurship. Despite the reduction in the rates of entrepreneurship, however, new ventures growth orientation increases because antidiscrimination policies motivate the pursuit of higher-potential opportunities.
- The impact of task decomposability in hypothesis testing within the psychotherapy sessionPublication . Jacinto, Sofia; Ferreira, Marina; Braga, João Niza; Collins, ElizabethIn a psychotherapy session it is very difficult to decompose the flux of information in its parts, which favors holistic intuitive judgments (Hammond et al., 1987), and constrains the interpretation of subsequent information according to the initially activated scheme (Eyal et al., 2011). Thus, we hypothesize the clinical session leads to confirmatory hypothesis testing and favors primacy effects (Jacinto et al., 2016). In two studies, we manipulated the decomposability of a clinical judgment to elicit either end-ofsequence (EoS) or step-by-step (SbS) response modes (Hogarth & Einhorn, 1992). In study 1, participants listened to audio excerpts of fictional clients describing, in random order, depression symptoms and non-depression behaviors. The excerpts were presented uninterruptedly followed by a global judgment (EoS) or broken into six shorter segments (SbS). Hypothesis testing strategy was measured through participants’ likelihood ratings of three possible diagnoses. Study 2 followed a similar paradigm, additionally testing for the scheme activation by manipulating the order of depression symptoms (beginning vs. end of the excerpt). Results show that understanding the case in a non-decomposable way (EoS mode) leads to more confirmatory hypothesis testing strategy, but only when a scheme is activated (depression symptoms presented in the beginning). Implications to therapy session are discussed.

- A syntactic analysis of the Portela Urbanization using prologPublication . Fernandes, Pedro AfonsoPortela is a paradigmatic modern housing complex located at the vicinity of Lisbon. Developed since the late 1960s, it combines several syntactic schemes, namely, concentric towers, asymmetric blocks and primary open-closed cells typically distributed along a ring-shaped road. It is also structured by a central space with a mall and other facilities. In this paper we introduce Prolog, a Logic Programming language used in Artificial Intelligence, to describe the internal logic of Portela Urbanization. Firstly, we explain how the syntactic schemes present in Portela can be generated in a recursive way using Prolog and following an approach like the ideographic language introduced by Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson in their seminal book The Social Logic of Space (1984). Secondly, we performed a settlement (alpha) analysis of Portela by computing connectivity, control, depth, integration and other syntactic measures using Prolog predicates. These two complementary approaches proved to be useful to understand the ideal of the Modern city as far as the Portela complex is concerned. And show how Logic Programming is a useful tool to describe the patterns of discrete systems as social knowables due to its declarative nature. In fact, a Prolog program represents a certain amount of knowledge, namely, of an urban settlement (or building), which is used to answer queries about the social and economic consequences of some spatial design.
