- A cinematic book: The Maias on the cinema screenPublication . Sobral, Filomena AntunesThe Maias - Scenes from Romantic Life - 2014 is a Portuguese film directed by João Botelho that confirms the dramatic qualities widely recognized to Eça de Queiroz’s nineteenth century novel - The Maias (1888). Surprisingly, only in 2014 was the cinematic approach conceived by proposing a unique and empathic creative dialogue with the novel. Thus, the objective of this paper is to establish a frame of reference which guides the reading to an interpretative proposal of João Botelho’s filmic adaptation. The text emphasizes the transformational grammar of the adaptation in the composition of an artful and operatic-theatrical ingenious film.

- Concurso de curtas-metragens enquanto laboratório de criatividade narrativa: Relato da experiência académica na ESEVPublication . Ferreira, Sónia de Almeida; Sobral, Filomena Antunes; Morais, Nídia Salomé Nina de; Gouveia, Teresa Sofia de AlmeidaNarrative art is as old as human kind and assumes itself as a fundamental element of everyday life. In this sense, since a narrative is a story that presents a diegetic universe composed of real or imaginary events, lived by fictional or true beings in a given time and space, this paper’s objective is to establish and present some thought about the video competition held by the School of Education from Viseu as a laboratory for narrative creativity. This initiative, which has already held twelve editions, integrates itself within the sphere of the institution’s cultural activities and it is an encouragement space for short cinematographic creations. In parallel, it aims to stimulate the talent, the creativity and the quality of the work submitted. In this contest, the students are invited, individually or in small groups, to create a short film with a maximum duration of 10 minutes, in Portuguese or in English and authors are free to propose the theme. The genres accepted in the competition are fiction, documentary and animation. The analysis of this experience allows us to list several positive aspects, such as the added value of the academic competition of short films as a mean to motivate and encourage Portuguese cinematographic production within an academic context, as well as to allow the development of skills in filming, editing and post-production by students from different study cycles.
- Considerações sobre televisão e culturaPublication . Sobral, Filomena AntunesIn a social and cultural universe in which television assumes an important role in the area of media’s reception, being a technical and communicational device of recognized impact on a global scale, it seems important to analyse and produce critical considerations about television, especially because it continues to raise, years after its appearance, opposite positions in terms of research. On the other hand, in a more complex level, television is involved in a social and cultural process more profound than the simple act of watching TV. So, the purpose of this paper is to think about these issues, trying to show up that there is a relationship of reciprocity between television, the construction of cultural identities and the way society works.

- O Crime do Padre Amaro de Eça de Queirós na TV - análise da adaptação televisivaPublication . Sobral, Filomena Antunes
- Diálogos entre literatura e cinema: Adaptação cinematográfica de narrativas queirosianasPublication . Sobral, Filomena AntunesHistorically, narrative art is assumed as a fundamental element of human living. In this sense, cinema and literature come together in the territory of literary adaptation in order to satisfy a collective need. Thus, in the context of intertextual dialogue, we understand that many filmic contents have its roots in classical novels, such as the Portuguese well-known canonical writer Eça de Queirós. Eça' literary heritage has been transposed in film over time and the latest creation by Manoel de Oliveira (Singularities of a blond girl, 2009), based on a novel from the nineteenth century by Eça de Queirós, is the confirmation that classic texts from this author continue to catalyze the filmmakers' interest and enhance contemporary interpretations. This interest is explained by the fact that Eça de Queirós' novels, not only offer us sublime narratives and whose dramatic potential is well known, but it also creates plots, characters and social or cultural representations that, although ironic and caricatured, continue to be recognized in modern times. Therefore, it seems that if literature collaborates closely with film, this successful association allows not only for the renewal of literary memory, but also for the democratization of cultural Portuguese literary heritage and perpetuates these stories to new generations, which seem of understandable importance. Based on the argument that cinema and literature establish a productive relationship in the context of literary adaptation, we intend to make an incursion through Eça de Queiros' narratives which were adapted into film by specially highlighting the revitalization of classical narratives provided by cinema.
- Eça de Queirós no audiovisualPublication . Sobral, Filomena AntunesKnowing that the literary adaptation is a phenomenon that crosses history, and also knowing that most of the literary transpositions have its roots in canonical 19th century novels, we begin this essay by drawing a map of the adaptations of the work of the Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós for film and television language. At the same time, we emphasize the dramatic potential of the writer’s literary inheritance. Lastly, we point out that the narrow collaboration between literature and audiovisual, besides revitalizing the classic narratives, also allows cultural democratization of the Portuguese literary tradition for the present generations.
- Em loop a obra abre-se: Reflexão videográfica sobre a obra abertaPublication . Sobral, Filomena Antunes; Pinto, Orlando José LombaThe objective of this article is to reflect on the video art work in its loop production to perceive the possibility of it being received as an open work. In order to contextualize this reflection the text is anchored in the concept of image-crystal from Gilles Deleuze. For the purpose of empirically explore theoretical concepts such as video art, open work and image-crystal it was produced a practical project of video art that intends to reflect on the notion of time in a context of a loop exhibition. Therefore this project aims to motivate the reflection on the loop as a mechanism to contour the ephemeral character of video art and, at the same time, it seeks to emphasize questions about the element of multiplicity and plurality in art. It is a scientific and artistic project in which the practical component supports the dialectic between theory and practice, action and reflection. In this sense, based on the video entitled "The Walk" this article demonstrates how the theoretical concepts were used to support the artistic creation. Finally the conclusions sustain that the work of video art, when presented in loop, is a creative and expository strategy which encourages multiple interpretations that vary according to the narrative, the context in which it takes place and the attitude and the background of the spectator.
