- Caracterização da densidade das lacunas em superfícies pictóricas com recurso a Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG)Publication . Henriques, Frederico; Gonçalves, Alexandre; Calvo, AnaEste estudo trata da aplicação de técnicas simples de processamento de imagens, em ambiente de sistemas de informação geográfica (SIG), tendo por base uma fotografia digital de pormenor de uma pintura retabular. O objectivo consiste em documentar, de modo semi-automático, a densidade de lacunas, através de um método de reclassificação, do tipo de limiarização (thresholding), e de algoritmos de estimação de densidade de pontos. A imagem fotográfica que se usa no exercício diz respeito ao painel da “Ressurreição de Lázaro”, obra do século XVI, pertencente à Charola do Convento de Cristo, em Tomar. O resultado final é um mapa temático das patologias do tipo de lacunas.
- Chromatic essay for characterization of losses for the chromatic reintegration process of cultural heritagePublication . The aim of this study is to propose a system for the characterization of the losses in the pictorial surface, so that conservator-restorer can have access to qualitative and quantitative accurate information before, during and after the intervention. We used photographic images of a panel painting from the (XVI century and a geographical information system software, used in the processing of spatial data, the QGIS open source program. - Conservação de medalhas contemporâneas: soluções de acondicionamentoPublication . Neves, Ana Sofia; Bailão, Ana; Henriques, Frederico; Ferreira, AndreiaO presente artigo tem dois objetivos: o primeiro é dar a conhecer o acervo de medalhas da extinta Secção de Investigação e de Estudos Volte Face – Medalha Contemporânea, da Unidade de Investigação da Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, o CIEBA, constituído por medalhas de diversos tamanhos, formatos e materiais (orgânicos, inorgânicos e sintéticos), cujas características influenciam o modo como se degradam e como se acondicionam; o segundo objetivo é apresentar as propostas de embalagem para o acondicionamento das medalhas, para as quais se recorreu à modelação 3D, desenho vetorial e impressão 3D. No primeiro caso apresenta-se a inventariação dos objetos, a sua documentação, a identificação dos materiais constituintes e dos fatores de degradação. Para o segundo caso definiram-se critérios para a seleção do formato das embalagens, e para a escolha dos materiais de construção. Selecionou-se o polipropileno alveolar para a caixa e o polietileno de baixa densidade para o material de enchimento.
- Delfim Maya: Processos de recuperação e divulgação de um património artístico esquecidoPublication . Loureiro, Leonor da Costa Pereira; Henriques, Frederico; Bailão, AnaDelfim Maria de Sousa Maya (1886- 1978) was an autodidact Portuguese artist, that began his artistic work through drawing and painting but developed his originality through metal foil sculpture. His work reveals a connection and interest to Ribatejo region and the tauromachic livelihood. The sculptures reveal an eximious three-dimensional work throughout a vigorous anatomical and movement component. His work has been poorly studied and released due to different historical circumstances. This article gives a global window of the work so far produced by the Project Delfim Maya within three fields: the research for conservation and restoration of paper objects, the disclosure mechanisms, and the educational level. This Project was born by the hand of Maria José Maya, and her wish to preserve her grandfather’s collection to future generations, a singular one within the National context.
- Documentation in conservation for the retouching process of a painting by Amadeo de Souza-CardosoPublication . Bailão, Ana; Henriques, Frederico; Cabral, Madalena Costa; Gonçalves, AlexandreIn the documentation in conservation context, there is an increasing demand for precise and accurate data and also for full three dimensional records of the cultural heritage. This paper presents the study case of a painting by Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso before, during and after the retouching treatment. The work focuses on the use of open source systems, such as GIS and photogrammetry software, in order to produce accurate maps of object losses and realistic virtual 3D models enabling the study of artworks with a minimum budget and a low cost infrastructure.

We used photographic images of a panel painting from the XVI century and a geographical information system (GIS) software used for processing spatial data, the QGIS open source program. The project has the particularity of being done in real time, during the intervention, in order to support the decision-making process.
- GIS technology for documentation of wall paintings in northern Portugal with a dark stain phenomenonPublication . Marco, Alexandra; Henriques, Frederico; Vieira, Eduarda; Pintado, Manuela; Moreira, Patrícia R.We often come across a problem of deterioration in some 15th and 16th century mural painting (MP) ensembles on the inner walls of granitic Romanesque religious buildings in the north of Portugal (fig. 1). It is manifested by the presence of dark pigmentation staining both granite supports and mural paintings (Marco, 2016 and 2019). The origin of this phenomenon is unknown and may be due to synergy of factors such as microbiological and chemical attacks.
- Heritage documentation and 3D retouching of virtual objectsPublication . Henriques, Frederico; Gonçalves, António; Candeias, Alexandre; Vieira, EduardaIn this paper we present some results of the use of digital documentation techniques for the characterization and analysis of Cultural Heritage. The used tools (geographic information systems, digital photogrammetry and computer graphics software) allow us to explore new forms of recovery of digital documentation. The typology of objects where these technologies may be applied is diverse, from public artworks to objects integrated into a museological context. For the performed exercises, which were presented in RECH 3, were given as examples objects from the urban parks in the city of Porto, from the National Museum of Soares dos Reis, from the Major Seminary of Our Lady of the Conception of Porto, from the Church of the Holy Spirit in Évora, and from private collectors, among others. The results show that through current digital techniques it is possible to document and characterize in a hyper-realistic manner the surfaces of the works, analyze the degradation phenomena with high accuracy, annotate technological evidences, develop virtual scenarios with infographic profile, reconstruct missing elements of objects, and even make chromatic reintegration on 3D objects. In practice, the actual virtualization works with digital photogrammetry and with recent techniques of computer processing that provide a handy tool for the documentation of heritage works. This kind of virtualization is a strong alternative to documentation made with laser scanning, often costly. Nonetheless, photogrammetry data capture always requires a high technical accuracy in the photographical acquisition and long post-processing elaboration to develop the 3D models.
- Identificação de regiões de lacunas numa pintura retabular: análise comparativa de métodos de classificação em ambiente SIGPublication . Henriques, Frederico; Gonçalves, AlexandreNo texto são apresentados alguns métodos de análise espacial, executáveis em ambiente de Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG), com o objectivo de quantificar a área de lacunas brancas de uma pintura sobre madeira do século XVI. Partindo de uma imagem obtida durante uma intervenção de conservação e restauro, da aplicação da análise de componentes principais (ACP) e da utilização de diversos classificadores de pixéis, efectuaram-se mapas temáticos das regiões de lacunas. Foram utilizados quatro métodos: uma divisão automática do histograma em intervalos (level slicing); uma limiarização (thresholding); um método de classificação supervisionada, baseada em áreas de treino, numa assinatura espectral e na aplicação de uma classificação de máxima verosimilhança(CMV); e um de classificação não supervisionada com um algoritmo de agrupamento de células, designado no programa informático de iso cluster. Nas condições em que foram feitos os ensaios, obtiveram-se melhores resultados na identificação das lacunas com a limiarização e a classificação supervisionada.
