- Contributos do enfermeiro especialista na promoção da esperança na criançaPublication . Abrantes, Marisa Sofia Potes Trindade; Charepe, Zaida BorgesChildren Nurses focuses the care provided on the child and family, viewing this binomial as the beneficiary of their care. These are provided at a crucial stage of the life cycle, which is often affected by factors such as chronic illness, disabilities, as well as other conditions that can negatively affect life and/or its quality, such as risky behavior, suicide, and violence. Children Nurses must work with particular attention to evaluating and promoting the growth and development of children and young people, transmitting anticipatory guidance to maximize potential for child development, well-being, and quality of life. So, the children’s right to Hope emerges, integrated into the competency of Specialist Children Nurses. Hope is essential in the children’s illness process, as such, for their families, empowering this duo, promoting coping and resilience strategies. This report aims to describe the skills path, from a critical and reflective perspective, within the scope of the master’s degree in nursing in Children and Pediatric Health at the School of Nursing (Lisbon) of the Portuguese Catholic University. To support the skills development path, the Strengths-Based Nursing Care philosophy, by Laurie Gottlieb, was characterized. The placement in pediatric inpatient context, being the workplace, encouraged reflection on situations of management and leadership in nursing care. The family environment provided more opportunities for developing skills and professional progress. I highlight the implementation of the “Hope Workshop” for hospitalized children and the “Hope Kit” for siblings of those children, as well training provided to health professionals and the development of a leaflet, to be made available to parents of hospitalized children. The neonatology context was very enriching in the development of skills about newborns, especially in critical condition, as well as in parental hope. It was the broadening of the horizon in relation to the theme of hope and the inclusion of the family to achieve the expected Children Nurse skills. Thus, it was possible to operationalize the “Diary of Hope”, as well as the adaptation of a therapeutic letter to distribute to parents of children admitted to neonatology, which was developed after carrying out a focus group to be completely individualized and in accordance with the nurses working in the context. During the placement in primary health care, it was possible to monitor and deepen the Child and Youth Health Programs recommended by the General Directorate of Health. Activities aimed at the humanization of care were developed, such as promoting hope in children using storytelling. Two informative posters were developed about storytelling and its use in promoting hope, training parents on this topic.
