- 5th Portuguese-Brazilian Conference on Conservation and Restoration: an introductory notePublication . Aguiar, Maria; Sousa, Gonçalo Vasconcelos e; Teixeira, Joana; Soares, Maria LuísaAt the end of 2019, the 5th edition of the Portuguese-Brazilian Conference on Conservation and Restoration took place, and was organized by CITAR (Catholic University of Portugal) in collaboration with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. During the 9th and 10th of December topics were discussed related to recent events, such as the tragic fire in the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, which occurred just over a year earlier; to the challenges posed by the conservation of new media art, contemporary art and scientific collections, as well as to the preservation of so-called more "traditional" cultural assets; without neglecting the necessary joint reflections about training on conservation and restoration on both sides of the Atlantic.
- António Carneiro's painting collection from the municipality of Oporto. Study and conservation in the 150th anniversary of the painter's birthPublication . Barata, Carolina; Cabral, Ana; Aguiar, Maria; Castro, Laura; Machado, Ana; Cardoso, Ana; Valadas, Sara; Piorro, LuisThis paper presents a summary of the results obtained in the first approach ever made to the characterization of the materials and techniques used in the oil painting production by António Carneiro (1872–1930), one of the best portuguese painters in the transition from the 19th to the 20th centuries. A selection of ten oils on canvas belonging to the Municipality of Oporto were analysed using a set of non-invasive techniques: Infrared Reflectography, Ultraviolet Fluorescence Photography, X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The results obtained suggest the use of materials and techniques established in Europe at the turn of the century. The palette is composed of Pb, Zn, Hg, Cr, Cd, Cu, and Co-based pigments, associated with both traditional and recently introduced materials. The great missing element is Ti, associated with Titanium White, available on the market since 1918.
- Promoting conservation culture through exchange in training on traditional and contemporary lining methodsPublication . Aguiar, Maria; Broers, Nico; Verheyden, Olivier; Idelson, Antonio Iaccarino; Roma, Paolo; Cudell, AnaConservation training is much influenced by the culture context in which it is developed. Depending on the country of origin, structural treatment of canvas paintings widely varies, reflecting climate conditions but also training traditions. Via an Erasmus Programme, traditional and contemporary lining techniques used in Belgium, Italy and Portugal were compared, bringing together teachers and students from École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc de Liège, the Universitá degli Studi Urbino “Carlo Bo” from Urbino and the Escola das Artes, Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
- The lining of canvas paintings with seamsPublication . Figueiredo, Ana Braamcamp de; Aguiar, MariaLarge painting supports were often created by seeing together several pieces of canvas. The lining problem caused by the adhesion of a new support to canvases with seams have been solved by conservators in different ways. A survey has been undertaken to evaluate the efficiency of five systems by making models and submitting them to tension until fracture with a dynamometer Hounsfield H10K-S® at stable environmental conditions (20 ºC, 65% RH). For lining, we used BEVA 371® as adhesive and four types of reinforcement fabric: linen, sized linen, polyester (Trevira C.S. ISPRA®) and sized polyester. We concluded that lining canvases with seams improves their mechanical resistance; that it is preferable to apply an interleaf to offset the seam relief; that the polyester textile used presents an inferior performance; and that the use of Reemay as mid-material improves the mechanical behaviour of linen textile.
