Abstract(s)
The internship this report refers to was carried out within the scope of the Master in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Items and took place in the Conservation and Restoration department of the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Porto. Concerning the scope of the chosen specialization, painting on wood, a treatment of conservation and restoration in a panel was carried out. The work of art, object of study and treatment, is an oil painting on wood, of unknown master or workshop, dating from the sixteenth century and representing Christ Carrying the Cross. It is owned by Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Porto and, since it is a very recent acquisition, there is little information about it. Throughout the internship, the historical, artistic and iconographic framework of the work of art was explored; in addition, both its material and technical treatments were studied. A conservation and restoration intervention was necessary, especially at the structural level, since the painting had suffered a deep attack of xylophagous insects and termites that fragilized the planks. In order to complement this requirement, spring systems have also been tested to allow the planning of wood panels consisting of one or more boards. The decisions made along the internship matched the needs of the work of art and have always had a criterion of conservation that prevails for the longevity of the work of art.
