Esta dissertação de conclusão do Mestrado Integrado em Teologia, pela Universidade
Católica Portuguesa – enquanto sistematização conceptual no âmbito teológico a partir da
perspectiva histórica –, tem como objectivo estabelecer os marcadores do percurso eclesiástico,
intelectual e de influência na ambivalência da “restauração católica”, de Gustavo Adolfo Ribeiro
de Almeida. Desta forma, procura contribuir para reduzir a escassez de biografias de clérigos
contemporâneos em Portugal, e ultrapassar formas de anonimato na consideração historiográfica.
Esta investigação pretende também estabelecer uma compreensão matizada e complexa do
relacionamento entre Igreja católica e o regime político português conhecido por Estado Novo
(1933-1974), através de um percurso de alguém que, por via do discurso e das diversas funções
que exerceu, marcou de forma significativa pessoas e instituições.
A dimensão teológica deste trabalho retém três aspectos importantes da actuação deste
eclesiástico: o seu pensamento social e respectivas implicações político-eclesiais; a sua visão da
organicidade do catolicismo; e a sua projecção como orientador espiritual, pelo
acompanhamento e pela direcção espiritual de pessoas de distintos horizontes intelectuais e
sociais. Estas dimensões de teologia prática direccionam-se para o que se pode considerar como
método de intencionalidade renovadora, isto é, uma renovação de prolongamento ou
continuidade, sem rupturas, uma “modernidade sem mudança”.
This dissertation is part of the Integrated Masters in Theology of Universidade Católica Portuguesa and aims to establish the markers of the ecclesiastical, intellectual and influencing path of Gustavo Adolfo Ribeiro de Almeida within the ambivalence of the “catholic restoration”, as a conceptual systematization from the historical perspective in the theological scope. Thus, it seeks to contribute to reduce the shortage of biographies of contemporary clerics in Portugal, and to overcome anonymity forms in historiographical consideration. This research also intends to establish a nuanced and complex understanding of the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Portuguese political regime known as the Estado Novo (1933-1974), highlighting the path of a man who marked people and institutions through the discourse and the various functions that he exerted. The theological dimension of this work retains three important aspects of the action of Gustavo de Almeida: his social thought and its political and ecclesial implications; his view of the organicity of Catholicism; and its projection as a spiritual leader, through the accompaniment and spiritual counselling of people belonging to different intellectual and social contexts. These dimensions of practical theology are directed towards what can be considered a method of renewed intentionality, that is, a renewal of extension or continuity, without ruptures, a “modernity without change”.
