Abstract(s)
Faced with the demands and needs of today's society, it is essential that schools proactively engage in efforts to improve their processes and, as a result, increase their effectiveness. As in other countries, in Portugal, there is also a need for schools to be involved in processes of consistent and continuous improvement. Evaluating any system is vital to the increase of your level of performance and competence. In the case of the educational system, it is an indispensable tool. It provides information on good educational practices that promote the desired results. The knowledge of school outcomes is not only essential for the development of innovative, effective and quality dynamics, but also to be aware of all other activities that allow students to have the skills and knowledge necessary to explore their abilities, in order to integrate themselves critically and actively in society. Evaluating the effectiveness of a school is not an easy task given the multiplicity of parameters and domains to take into account. This evaluation should be understood as a way to obtain information leading to the knowledge of the school, and then to take action. Once the needs are diagnosed, educational strategies and development processes must be implemented in order to obtain some improvement. With this project we investigate the good practices that characterize an effective school, transforming it into a good school. Having this in mind, our empirical work was based on a qualitative and quantitative research, which involved the analysis of guiding documents on the educational action of the school and a survey carried out amongst secondary school students. It is a study case, done with data collected in a school in the district of Viseu, whose academic results in the national exams have been improving as well as its position in the national ranking in the last three years.
