Abstract(s)
A high growth in the tourism sector is associated with a diverse and complex set of economic, sociocultural and environmental impacts, capable of affecting residents’ quality of life of a tourist destination. In this context, the development policies of the territories must meet and privilege the sustainability of tourism. Residents influence the perception of the profile and quality of the tourist offer and, inevitably, are a variable to consider in the development process of tourist destinations. Thus, understanding their perspectives and attitudes towards tourism development is fundamental to the sustainability of the industry in this sector. The present study aims to develop an analysis of variables that influence residents’ support for tourism development, in the Porto district. By adopting a non-forced approach in measuring the perceived economic, sociocultural and environmental impacts, it is intended to assess its influence on residents' support for tourism development. In addition, both place image and place attachment are introduced as preceding variables of residents' support for tourism development. Thus, the aim will be to identify the relationship between both place image and place attachment with the residents’ support for tourism development and, also, with the perceived impacts. After a literature review on topics such as tourism and sustainable development, residents’ perceptions and attitudes, tourism impacts, place image and place attachment, an empirical study was conducted. The results achieved through the implementation of a questionnaire to the residents of Porto district, allowed to reinforce the idea that there is a relationship between the perceived impacts of tourism and the support of residents to its development. The results also reveal the significance of place image in shaping residents' perception of xi tourism impacts as well as their level of support. Finally, the relationship between place attachment and the perceived economic and sociocultural impacts of tourism were also validated.
