Esta dissertação toma em consideração os estudos de cinema enquanto sub-área dos Estudos de Cultura, afirmando as manifestações de cultura popular e de cultura
material, a par das suas formas de mediação e representação, bem como a interacção
entre as estruturas de poder e as manifestações culturais, abrindo espaço à interpretação de textos cinematográficos tomados como sistemas de signos. Surgido por via de uma
adaptação, o texto cinematográfico The Hours convoca a literatura tanto no próprio
romance que adapta, The Hours de Michael Cunningham, como no de Virginia Woolf que é homenageado – Mrs. Dalloway. Esta dissertação pretende discutir a sobrevivência
de um texto moderno na sua transposição para um texto pós-moderno quando
submetido a um processo de remediação, ao mesmo tempo que discute se, no texto cinematográfico The Hours, se mantêm vivos os conceitos de escrita para a morte e o
de herói moderno de Baudelaire.
The present thesis takes into consideration film studies as a subgroup of Cultural Studies. It focuses primarily on manifestations of popular and material culture, together with means of mediation and representation, as well as the interaction between the structures of power and those cultural manifestations, opening the way to the interpretation of cinematographic texts as semiotic systems. Created from an adaptation, the cinematographic text, The Hours has its roots in literature; on one hand, the novel The Hours by Michael Cunningham and on the other, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, to which the former pays homage. This thesis endeavours to discuss the survival of a modern text in its transformation into a post-modern text when it is subjected to a process of remediation. Moreover, we attempt to establish whether the cinematographic text of The Hours remains faithful to Baudelaire’s concepts of writing to death and the modern hero.
