Abstract(s)
Despite contrasting opinions about racial quotas system, it was previously passed by the university council of Brasília University (UnB), which was pioneering in this area; later, other national universities, covered by federal law, also adopted this system. In relation to that topic, this paper relies on two issues that have been frequently discussed inside and outside universities over the years: “1. has the racial quotas system stablished as a result of Affirmative Action Policies adopted in Brazil positively affected in the access of afro-brazilians to UnB? 2. do the current racial quotas system in force in Brasília University set a pattern for other institutions in accordance with the equality of rights, without any kind of racial, ethnic or social class discrimination?”. In order to answer these two questions, an amount of bibliographic sources was collected and field research was conducted in which UnB undergraduate degree students, including quota holder ones, and professors who, in somehow, collaborated to introduce quotas system in the university were asked to share their thoughts about that topic. In addition to this, some servants of Ministry of Education were also invited to share their opinion about quotas system implemented in Brazilian universities. All the answers collected by questionnaires and interviews were gathered and analyzed based on bibliographic sources previously studied, as it will be seen in some titles in this paper. Moreover, a few abstracts and published documents that constitute an information asset about that topic were added to this paper due to contribute to affirmative actions’ improvement towards reduce inequality in multiple sections of Brazilian society.
