- Burnout in nurses working in Portuguese palliative care teams: a mixed methods studyPublication . Pereira, Sandra M.; Fonseca, António M.; Carvalho, Ana Sofia
- Burnout in palliative care: a systematic reviewPublication . Pereira, Sandra Martins; Fonseca, António M.; Carvalho, Ana SofiaBurnout is a phenomenon characterized by fatigue and frustration, usually related to work stress and dedication to a cause, a way of life that does not match the person’s expectations. Although it seems to be associated with risk factors stemming from a professional environment, this problem may affect any person. Palliative care is provided in a challenging environment, where professionals often have to make demanding ethical decisions and deal with death and dying. This article reports on the findings of a systematic review aimed at identifying described burnout levels in palliative care nurses and physicians, and the related risks and protective factors. The main findings indicate that burnout levels in palliative care, or in health care settings related to this field, do not seem to be higher than in other contexts.
- Motivação para a aprendizagem ao longo da vidaPublication . Dias, Paulo; Fonseca, António M.In this exploratory study with a non-randomized sample, the authors try to explore adults' motivations toward lifelong learning. Using a quantitative methodology, the motivation (importance of learning, intrinsic value of learning and pleasure in learning) and participations in learning (presently, in the last two years or more than three years ago) were assessed considering sex, age and schooling.
- Attitudes, knowledge, and interest: preparing university students to work in an aging worldPublication . Gonçalves, Daniela C.; Guedes, Joana; Fonseca, António M.; Pinto, Fernando Cabral; Martín, Inácio; Byrne, Gerard J.; Pachana, Nancy A.Background: The underlying goals of the present study were (i) to assess knowledge of and attitudes towards aging in a sample of Portuguese undergraduate students undertaking various degrees in health and welfare subjects, and (ii) to analyze the extent to which knowledge, attitudes and other factors were associated with interest in working with older adults. Methods: The study was cross-sectional in design. The sample comprised 460 Portuguese undergraduate students enrolled in degrees in nursing, social work, and psychology. They were asked to complete questionnaires and quizzes, which were analyzed using contingency tables and one way analysis of variance for inter-group comparison, and then subjected to multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Significant differences emerged between groups on knowledge, attitudes towards aging and interest in working with older adults, with both nursing and social work students displaying more positive attitudes, knowledge, and interest in working with older adults, when compared with psychology students. A regression analysis indicated that attitudes, knowledge, and previous formal contact were significant predictors of interest. Conclusion: Interest in working with older adults was significantly related to positive attitudes, more knowledge and formal previous contact. Positive attitudes towards older adults can be promoted through interaction with faculty members and experts, knowledge acquisition about normative changes with age, and contact with healthy and impaired older adults.
- Identifying priorities for aging policies in two Portuguese communitiesPublication . Bárrios, Maria João; Fernandes, Ana Alexandre; Fonseca, António M.The aging population has an impact on health, social and economic issues in regards to individuals, communities and organizations. The challenge for local policies in response to aging is to create sufficient resources to meet the population’s needs, wishes and rights as people age. Active aging constitutes one of the guiding perspectives on policies. Taking into account the local governance perspective, the instrument MALPA was created in order to convert the active aging paradigm into a practical approach, as a technique to evaluate and analyze local aging policies. In this research, the MALPA instrument was applied in two Portuguese communities (Coruche and Oeiras). The objective was to identify the intervention priorities of aging policies in both communities, determining if the instrument can facilitate the development of proposals for the improvement of local aging policies. It was possible to evaluate the communities and programs, identifying the least appropriate policy actions regarding the intervention priorities. The results allowed us to identify 10 priorities about: collaborative governance, involvement of the elderly in the policy making process, lifelong learning, economic hardship, policies for all ages, isolated vulnerable and fragile groups, intergenerational contacts, safety in all policies, labor opportunities and conditions and transport network improvement.
- Uma tipologia de modos de vida na aposentadoria em PortugalPublication . Guedes, Joana Martins; Silva, Sérgio Bacelar e; Fonseca, António M.The aim of this study is to formulate a typology of retirement lifestyles considering a set of accumulated resources along the life course, in the form of goods (health, social environment, income) and potential (employment status, outside work activities in the past, education, vocational training). Logistic regression was used to a sample of Portuguese retirees of both sexes (N=499) in order to clarify the impact of these variables on each retirement practice. The result of the model presents plausible explanations for four main retirement practices: withdrawal, third age, family, leisure, highlighting the factors that best explain each one of them.

- Working family carers in Portugal: between the duty and the burden of caring for old vulnerable peoplePublication . Fonseca, António M.; Gonçalves, Daniela C.; Pereira, Sandra M.This paper intends to reflect on some of the predominant traits of caring for older vulnerable people in Portugal, where the most common care model is a mix of informal home-based provision and support from the public and private sectors. We shall address some issues concerning the risks and limits of informal caretaking of older dependent people based on a case study of a woman who has to fulfil multiple roles, pushing her to the limit of her ability to cope. Evidence indicates that solutions to the challenges of caring for an ageing population, especially those in a vulnerable condition, require a consideration of material, social, cultural, and psychological measures. On the basis of the nature of the links between these areas, the quality of the care provided and the consequences for the working family carers, we can define standards of caring solutions for older people and hence derive policies for preventive and optimized interventions. Our final aim is to emphasize the importance of palliative care settings to improve the quality of life and minimize the suffering of both older people and their carers.
