- Construction and evaluation of an educational video: nursing assessment and intervention of patients’ spiritual needsPublication . Rodrigues, Juliane Cristina; Miranda, Talita Prado Simão; Fulquini, Francine Lima; Guilherme, Caroline; Caldeira, Sílvia; Carvalho, Emilia Campos deSpirituality is particularly important in health and illness transitions and is a fundamental dimension of healthcare. However, nurses often feel underprepared to provide spiritual care and the use of dynamic and interactive strategies, such as educational videos, can facilitate the development of this competency in undergraduate education. This study aimed to construct and evaluate an educational video lasting 10 min and 52 s for nursing students concerning the assessment of patients’ spiritual needs. The methodological study was based on the pre-production, production, and post-production phases of the video with an evaluation of the comprehension and comprehensiveness of the content. The results demonstrated the pre-production phase was considered appropriate by the judges and allowed the phase of production of the educational video, considered an educational resource by 100% the experts. Nursing students were enrolled in the evaluation and 75% considered the content and the learning experience useful for their future roles as nurses. So, the educational video was considered a tool that facilitated deepening knowledge about spirituality and motivated students to assess spirituality in clinical practice.

Santos, Paulo Alexandre Figueiredo dos; Rabiais, Isabel Cristina Mascarenhas; Berenguer, Sílvia Maria Alves Caldeira; Amendoeira, José Joaquim PenedosBackground: Nurses play a central role in disaster preparedness, so appropriate disaster-related education is essential. However, almost all Portuguese undergraduate nursing curricula do not address disaster situations. Objective: To understand nursing schools’ contribution to developing undergraduate students’ knowledge and skills in disaster scenarios and the existing constraints on integrating this content into undergraduate nursing curricula. Methodology: A qualitative study with methodological triangulation, including interviews and focus group, was carried out to explore the perceptions of 35 nurse teachers and 6 nurses with experience in health care provision in disaster scenarios, about integrating disaster-related content into nursing curricula. Results: The study reveals that disaster management and preparedness should be integrated into undergraduate nursing education to guarantee the effective development and more objective regulation of students’ skills in this area. Conclusion: Portuguese nursing schools need to promote and develop undergraduate training in disaster preparedness and a more inclusive and objective regulation of this area.
- Spiritual needs of Brazilian children and adolescents with chronic illnesses: a thematic analysisPublication . Alvarenga, Willyane de Andrade; Machado, Júlia Rezende; Leite, Ana Carolina Andrade Biaggi; Caldeira, Sílvia; Vieira, Margarida; Rocha, Silvana Santiago da; Nascimento, Lucila CastanheiraPurpose: To identify the spiritual needs of children and adolescents with chronic illnesses and how these needs are met by health professionals during hospitalization. Design and methods: A qualitative descriptive study was developed with 35 children and adolescents, between 7 and 18 years old, diagnosed with cancer, cystic fibrosis, and type 1 diabetes. Interviews with photo-elicitation were conducted during the hospitalization at a Brazilian public pediatric hospital. Findings were treated using thematic analysis, and the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) was followed for quality reporting. This research was approved by a research committee. Results: Two themes emerged. The first, entitled ‘Spiritual needs’, encompasses five types of needs: (1) need to integrate meaning and purpose in life; (2) need to sustain hope; (3) need for expression of faith and to follow religious practices; (4) need for comfort at the end of life; and (5) need to connect with family and friends. The second theme was the ‘Definition of spiritual care’. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with chronic illnesses have spiritual needs while in hospital. Meeting these needs is essential for finding meaning, purpose and hope in the experience of living with chronic illnesses and at the end of life, based on their faith, beliefs and interpersonal relationships. But, these needs have not been fully addressed during hospitalization. Practice implications: These results emphasize the need to implement spiritual care when caring for hospitalized pediatric patients, which includes addressing spiritual needs.
- Parenting of children with autism spectrum disorder: a grounded theory studyPublication . Viana, Clara Roquette; Caldeira, Sílvia; Lourenço, Margarida; Figueiredo, Amélia SimõesBackground: Parenting a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) involves several processes and emotions during this transition. In addition to the family's natural transition when a child is born, the family of a child with ASD has to deal with the particularities of the disability, its characteristics, and its evolution. Methods: This is a qualitative grounded theory study aiming to deepen the knowledge about the process of parenting children with ASD. Data were collected using interviews and observations of nine couples and one single mother. Results: Coding and analysis led to the main theme, which is as follows: parenting of children with ASD as representative of the parents' transformation while caring for the child, also based on adaptation throughout this experience. Conclusions: Parenting is a dynamic process, grounded on the interaction of different contexts, such as family, education, health, and society, and on the co-construction of different times and episodes. These characteristics underline the complex and individual nature of parenting children with autism, which requires specific assessments and interventions by nurses when caring for these families, whether in a family nursing context, community nursing, and pediatric nursing or midwifery.
- A commentary on spiritual leadership and workplace spirituality in nursing managementPublication . Ribeiro, Mónica; Caldeira, Sílvia; Nunes, Elisabete; Vieira, MargaridaAim: Bring to discussion how spiritual leadership and workplace spirituality, on a health care system that faces constant challenges and seeks constant adaptations, as a way to guarantee nurses’ well-being and quality of care Background: The work environment has shown to have impact on staff well-being. Workplace spirituality relates to sense of belonging, motivation and commitment. A spiritual leadership is fundamental to develop workplace spirituality. Evaluation: Starting from literature, a reflection on the theme was carried out based on the results of the development of spiritual leadership and workplace spirituality in health care institutions, in professionals and in patients. Key issues: Nurses have spiritual needs which need to be also addressed in order to promote the sense of identification with the institutions vision and goals. A relation between spiritual leadership, workplace spirituality and subjective well-being is often found in literature, and this is critical evidence towards new management and leadership dynamics and models in health care institutions, that should integrate workplace spirituality. Conclusion: Nursing leaders are responsible for workplace spirituality facilitation. Nursing leadership and workplace spirituality seem both an answer and way to the change of health institutions management paradigm, but more studies are needed to inform this change in practice.
- Historical professionalization movements: the relationship between social disasters and modern nursingPublication . Santos, Paulo Alexandre Figueiredo dos; Rabiais, Isabel Cristina Mascarenhas; Amendoeira, José Joaquim Penedos; Figueiredo, Amélia Simões; Berenguer, Sílvia Maria Alves Caldeira; Pereira, Maria Cristina Queiroz VazBackground: Nurses’ socio-professional affirmation becomes a reference in contexts of social disasters. Objective: To analyze the relationship between social disasters and the importance of the contribution of some nurses to designing/developing nursing as a profession at the end of the 19th century. Methodology: Although the methodological choices in the validation of the scientific nature of this historical study are based on historiography, the facts narrated and interpreted in this study were contextualized according to the historical period, which allowed the development of new meanings that define unities, totalities, series, and innovative relations within the documentary material itself. Results: Several nurses contributed to the development of nursing as a science. They practiced their profession in contexts with a common denominator: armed conflicts that translated into a scenario of social disaster, where the need to care for others was paramount. Conclusion: Contexts of social disasters unquestionably provided modern nursing with a field of action that brought it visibility and allowed its development as a discipline.
- Validation of the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL) in Portuguese Cancer Patients Undergoing ChemotherapyPublication . Martins, Helga; Caldeira, Sílvia; Dias Domingues, Tiago; Vieira, Margarida; Koenig, Harold G.Religion is one of the strategies used to cope with life stressful events, particularly in cancer patients. This study aimed to translate, adapt and validate the 5-item Duke University Religion Index (DUREL) into European Portuguese. This is a crosssectional study in a sample of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Data were collected in July–October 2018, and the study was approved by the ethics committee of the institution. A sample of 150 participants was included (64.7% female and 35.3% male), aged 35–83 years, and mainly Catholic (86.7%). Participants who were females, older, had lower education and from evangelical religious traditions scored higher on the total score. The Cronbach’s alpha was 0.89. Factor analysis revealed a one-factor solution. Convergent validity was achieved between DUREL and BIAC (r=0.78; p<0.01). The DUREL European Portuguese version is a valid and reliable tool for measuring religious commitment in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy
