  • A literatura no cinema Oliveiriano
    Publication . Sobral, Filomena Antunes
It is clear in the cinematography of the Portuguese emblematic director Manoel de Oliveira the influence of other arts, especially literature. Indeed, the literary adaptation impregnates the filmmaker’s interest in several filmic productions leading to works focusing on various themes, where prevails the female figure and Agustina Bessa-Luís texts. The involvement of the director in this context of intertextual dialogue goes back to his first fictional productions and remains throughout his extensive career. Studying the fictional universe of Oliveira is to rethink issues related to literary adaptation and its peculiarities. It is similarly to reflect on the role of adaptation in the Portuguese cinema and at the same time, to place the Portuguese filmmaker in the constellation of other paradigmatic filmmakers who established a dialogic relationship with written sources. In order to sustain the arguments, this reflection is anchored in literature and film studies and, at the same time, in the theory of adaptation. Highlighting the dialogical relationship between literature and film in the work of Manoel de Oliveira, this text seeks to establish a reflection on the literary adaptation and, in parallel, orientates the reader to the singularities of filmic transmutation emphasizing the various literary adaptations made by Oliveira that the Portuguese cinema has witnessed. The literature within Manoel de Oliveira’s films contributes to demonstrate the positive link that historically has connected these two forms of expression and offers an original exercise of rereading that accentuates the independence and the creative freedom of Manoel de Oliveira.

  • Traditional television, millennials and binge-watching - from television viewer to digital user
    Publication . Sobral, Filomena Antunes
In this multi-screen reality we live in, marked by constant changes in television consumption behaviors, the questions raised at the beginning of this century about the end of television (Katz & Scannell, 2009) have once again become a live issue and it is time for us to reflect on the position of this medium in an age of both media and social fragmentation. We are immersed in a post-television era in which audiovisual consumption is broadcast, not only on traditional television screens, but also on other platforms made possible by technological development and in which video streaming is a popular viewing practice among Millennials. The Internet has become a major means of communication for young people whose socialization and information processes are highly influenced by what they watch on screens, especially on their smartphones. This is an age in which viewing habits like binge-watching are becoming increasingly common. Interestingly, we are evolving into meta-intelligence group-minds (Diamandis, 2013) within a technological culture that is finally achieving what Mcluhan established in 1964 - a culture that shaped the tools that are currently shaping us. Simultaneously, we are witnessing a culture based on technological devices that established the Age of EMEREC (Cloutier, 1975) or the era of self-media. In fact, if we want to understand what is happening in today’s world, we must go back to the 1960s and 1970s and to the studies conducted by Mcluhan and Cloutier on media and communication. Mcluhan perceived media as extensions of the human being and nowadays, as we reach the communicational stage advocated by Cloutier, we enter definitively the fourth episode. We embrace the self-media and realize it is an extension of mass media. We have reached an age in which both the emitter and receiver become one - the so-called "Em-rec". Much has been said about the decline of the centrality of linear television and about the model of activity upon which TV will have to base its future. Never has the question of how to adapt TV into the context of technological volubility been as relevant as it is today. What are the prospects for continuity and disruption? These and other questions will guide the revision of the state of the art about a topic that concerns both Portuguese and foreign researchers. Thus, this paper highlights several discursive formations covering the present and future of traditional television and underlines the window of opportunity which may help re-create the medium: it is not about accepting its imminent end, but about emphasizing the need for reconversion instead

Publication . Ferreira, Sónia; Morais, Salomé; Gouveia, Teresa; Sobral, Filomena; Gomes, Cristina
The global increasing importance of the Internet in the various segments of society is explicit, and its rapid control by younger users particularly seems irrefutable. But what do they consume? This paper presents the partial and preliminary results of the Project - The consumption and sharing contents of Internet by students of higher education: the case of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, Portugal, specifically related to the consumption practices of Internet content by students of the School of Education, one of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu Schools. The principal objective of the Project is to understand the use that higher education students do of the contents available on the Internet. The methodological approach includes the application of an online questionnaire survey, with questions related to: i) the socio-demographic and institutional data of the participants; ii) access to and use of the Internet; iii) competences for its use; iv) consumption and sharing content; v) and attitudes and preferences regarding consumption and sharing. The sample includes 120 students, with participation of students attending the courses of Social Communication (N=79) and Multimedia and Plastics Arts (N=32). Most of the participants are female (N=88), attend the 1st year of the course (N=88) and the average age is 19.36 years (SD=2.56). Asked about how often they access the Internet, 95.8% of the students said they use it every day. Preliminary results from the quantitative analysis suggest that the most popular activities are: listen to music, see photos and read text posts on social networks daily. The analysis presented in this article refers only to data obtained between June and September 2017 and was performed using the SPSS - Statistical Package for Social Sciences.

Publication . Gouveia, Teresa Sofia de Almeida; Ferreira, Sónia de Almeida; Sobral, Filomena Antunes
The study focuses on the analysis of the academic experience entitled Television of the Superior School of Education from Viseu (ESEV TV). This academic project has been an online experience since 2011 and comprises a space of experimentation and broadcasting for audiovisual contents. The significance of the digital sphere embodied mostly through the internet places this medium as the ideal platform to the exchange of contents created by the academic community and favors its dissemination to a heterogeneous audience. The implementation of this audiovisual project encourages the collaboration and the creative initiative of those involved in it and, at the same time, intents to improve the capabilities of expression and communication skills of the participants. It is also an objective of this creative initiative to build an historical archive of audiovisual produced material as also as to promote the integration of students, strengthening ethical and moral values and increasing communication strategies. ESEV TV is available to all study cycles from the institution where it is allocated and represents a workshop camp where it is possible to practice techniques and develop knowledge in the television production area. The accomplishment of the project purpose is inextricably dependent on the existence of a working group constantly updated, also multidisciplinary, that aggregates students from different areas. This complex interdependent mission is guided by teachers with knowledge and experience in the audiovisual field. The team work expects to produce an interesting online schedule that reunites, at the same time, information, culture, education and entertainment.
