- Towards an ontology of the interface: identifying the interface as a mediation entityPublication . Sá, CristinaThe interface is more than an assemblage of processes and effects; it is more than a pure relational instance. The interface can be identified as an entity in itself and in relation to other entities. In this article, the author presents an ontological work on the interface, defining what it is and how it exists, and discussing its relation to other entities. The interface is defined both abstractly as a mediation complex—by identifying characteristics present in its multiple instantiations—and in relation to other entities—by observing the case of the human-computer interface.

This competition was created to foment the development of digital and interactive art, by valuing contemporary artistic practice. I have had the opportunity of following the development process and the privilege of being a jury member of iNTERFACES. In this article I’ll review the process of creating this first edition, from its genesis to the final exhibition, placing special emphasis on the submitted pieces, and, of course, on the winners.
- Ainda Precisamos de Interfaces? Sobre o interface enquanto complexo mediadorPublication . Sá, CristinaPor definição corrente, interface é um sistema ou dispositivo através do qual entidades não relacionadas podem interagir. Para traçar o estado actual do interface, propõe-se uma exploração da sua condição, partindo do reconhecimento do espaço relacional que comporta propriedades dos sistemas em ligação, para o constituir como uma entidade que tem características próprias, emergentes dessa ligação. Esta entificação implica a inscrição do interface num espaço-tempo e, consequentemente, a sua ligação à noção de experiência que, por seu turno, o associa à mediação. Através da teoria dos media surge a problematização da superação do interface: coloca-se a possibilidade deste ser uma componente intermédia num processo que caminha no sentido da desincorporação total dos media, marcando uma tendência para o apagamento dos interfaces; coloca-se a possibilidade inversa de ele ganhar importância, pois essa desincorporação implica uma capacidade dos media de penetrar e serem penetrados pela experiência humana, precisamente através de interfaces, ainda que cada vez mais imperceptíveis.
