- 40 years of excellence: an overview of technovation and a roadmap for future researchPublication . Dabić, Marina; Marzi, Giacomo; Vlačić, Božidar; Daim, Tugrul; Vanhaverbeke, WimThe International Journal of Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology Management (Technovation) is a flagship journal in the fields of management and technological innovation. This renowned position is largely a result of academic interest, as demonstrated by the large number of citations received from other prestigious journals, as well as downloads from across the globe. This study honors the 40th anniversary of Technovation and provides an overview of the journal's accomplishments since its conception in 1981 using Thomson Reuters Web of Science Core Collection database, complemented by both the Elsevier Scopus and EBSCO Business Premier databases, as well as the journal's webpage. This study highlights the main contributors (i.e. authors, universities, countries accountable for the journal's high ranking), the most cited articles, and the thematic profile of the journal through an extensive bibliometric analysis of Technovation publications. Finally, this study outlines growing research trends and proposes trajectories for future research.
- Academic analytics: anatomy of an exploratory essayPublication . Ferreira, Sérgio André; Andrade, AntónioInvestment in technological subsystems to support the activity of teaching and learning and the various areas of the life of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) is of increasing importance in the implementation of the policy and strategy of these organizations. Each of these subsystems collects a huge amount of data that, if properly organized, can provide useful information for decision making and informed action, which results in the need to articulate the strategic vision with Information Systems. This study aims to identify the technological requirements and understand the technical difficulties in accessing data sources of different technological subsystems in order to facilitate dialogue between the departments which hold the data to build a future Academic Analytics in a HEI. To achieve these goals a prototype was conceived which involved the aggregation, cleansing and standardization of data sources and resulted in a database that integrates records from three data sources—the LCMS (Learning Content Management System), academic management services and quality management services. This prototype allows reports and analysis to be made. Future studies for the development and implementation of Academic Analytics that can produce information to support decision making and control of the HEI’s activity are also possible.
- Academic analytics: mapeando o genoma da universidadePublication . Ferreira, Sérgio André; Andrade, AntónioHigher education institutions (HEIs) have multiple technologic subsystems for administrative, pedagogical management and quality purposes, which gather an immense volume of data from various sources and which do not communicate with each other. The domain of the analytic performances in Education emerges from the need to aggregate multiple sources of data, which the complexity of treatment associated with the ease of mobilizing selected information will make it possible to understand reality and optimize management actions. In this article, we present the architecture and results achieved in the development of an Academic Analytics aggregator of multiple sources of data on the educational activity.

- Accounting choice in measurement and comparability: an examination of the effect of the fair value optionPublication . Fontes, Joana C.; Panaretou, Argyro; Shakespeare, CatherineThe choice between historical cost and fair value measurement is one of the most debated issues among accounting academics and practitioners. We use the election of the fair value option (FVO) to study the effects of entities’ measurement choices on accounting comparability. The FVO enables entities to use different measurement bases for similar assets and liabilities, raising questions about whether the FVO compromises or enhances comparability. Using a sample of US banks, we find that FVO elections increase comparability both across FVO electing banks and between FVO electing banks and banks that never elect the FVO but only if the FVO elections comply with the intent of the standard setters to remedy accounting mismatches. Overall our results suggest that banks elect the FVO to better present their economics, yielding higher comparability.
- Across establishments, within firms: worker’s mobility, knowledge transfer and survivalPublication . Tavares, Marisa Fernanda FigueiredoWe analyze the recruitment strategies and the survival of newly created establishments that are affiliated with pre-established _rms. For the new establishments, the existence of ports of entry as well as the importance of internal and external recruitment is assessed. Being affiliated with a pre-established firm may be a source of competitive advantage and improve the new plant’s chances of survival as the parent firm may supply the newly created unit with expertise and firm-specific knowledge. In this research we suggest a channel for knowledge transfer that has been little addressed in previous literature: within firm and across establishments mobility of workers. As firm-specific knowledge is mainly embodied and non-tradable, we suggest that it can be successfully transferred to the new unit embodied in the workers that are internally recruited. We find that internally transferred workers, particularly skilled workers hired at high-rank jobs play an important role in improving the survival of new establishments.
- Adam Smith and Catholic Social TeachingPublication . Martins, Nuno OrnelasThe connections between Adam Smith and Catholic Social Teaching (CST) raise several questions. The principle of subsidiarity adopted in CST, according to which higher associations should not replace subordinate organizations on what the latter can do, seems to be in line with the idea that governmental intervention in the market sphere should be restricted to the minimum required, in line with what is typically seen as Smith’s view. But the principle of the common good would also recommend intervention from political authorities in order to ensure that the common good is achieved. Here I shall argue that this question must be addressed taking into account another principle of CST, the principle of solidarity, and also the basic principle of CST, regarding human dignity. To do so, it is necessary to understand how the various principles of CST spring from the notion of imago Dei in CST, which is behind the notion of human dignity. This leads to a relational conception of human beings which can be fruitfully articulated with Smith’s moral philosophy and political economy.
- African versus portuguese managers’ attitudes toward older workers: an empirical studyPublication . Rego, Arménio; Vitória, Andreia; Ribeiro, Tânia; Ribeiro, Leonor; Lourenço-Gil, Rui; Leal, Susana; Cunha, Miguel Pina eThe study explores the attitudes toward older workers of African managers, and how these managers make HRM decisions in scenarios involving younger versus older students. We compare African (n= 154) with Portuguese (n= 134) managers. African (n= 63) and Portuguese (n= 138) university students are also included to make cultural, social and institutional explanations more robust. The findings suggest that, although African individuals have more positive attitudes toward older workers than Portuguese do, they make more discriminatory decisions in the HRM scenarios. We suggest that this contradiction may emerge from dualities characterizing Africa.
- Agglomeration patterns in a multi-regional economy without income effectsPublication . Gaspar, José M.; Castro, Sofia B. S. D.; Correia-da-Silva, JoãoWe study the long-run spatial distribution of industry using a multi-region core–periphery model with quasi-linear log utility Pflüger (Reg Sci Urban Econ 34:565–573, 2004). We show that a distribution in which industry is evenly dispersed among some of the regions, while the other regions have no industry, cannot be stable. A spatial distribution where industry is evenly distributed among all regions except one can be stable, but only if that region is significantly more industrialized than the other regions. When trade costs decrease, the type of transition from dispersion to agglomeration depends on the fraction of workers that are mobile. If this fraction is low, the transition from dispersion to agglomeration is catastrophic once dispersion becomes unstable. If it is high, there is a discontinuous jump to partial agglomeration in one region and then a smooth transition until full agglomeration. Finally, we find that mobile workers benefit from more agglomerated spatial distributions, whereas immobile workers prefer more dispersed distributions. The economy as a whole shows a tendency towards overagglomeration for intermediate levels of trade costs.
