- Art and design innovation in the luxury hospitality businessPublication . Vermeil, Armand Marie Daniel André; Rajsingh, PeterThis dissertation investigates how innovation in art and design contributes to a competitive edge in the luxury hotel industry. Combining an online survey and semistructured interviews, we analyzed the impact of aesthetics, cultural authenticity and artistic creation on customer experience, brand perception and Willingness-To-Pay a premium price. Quantitative results show that almost 86% of participants considered design and artistic staging to be essential elements in their hotel experience. Moreover, 83% said they were willing to pay a premium for a unique artistic concept or design, underlining the strong correlation between visual innovation and price. Statistical analysis also revealed that integrating local cultural elements, sustainability and storytelling around design increases emotional satisfaction and brand attachment. Interviews with experts confirmed the strategic importance of thoughtful, inimitable design: the creation of immersive spaces and collaboration with renowned architects or artists help to differentiate establishments in an increasingly competitive market. The study also revealed a gap between the current enthusiasm for sustainability and the extent to which it is considered when choosing hotels. While professional players insisted on integrating eco-responsible materials, only 30% of customers deemed this essential. Artistic and design innovation appeared to be a major lever for enriching the customer experience and justifying premium pricing. An authentic cultural approach, combined with meticulous aesthetics, coherent storytelling and premium hotel services and amenities, consolidates exclusivity and customer loyalty in luxury hotels.

- Catch me if you can : sustainability meets airport expansion: case study with Vienna airportPublication . Mewes, Frederik Wedig; Moreira, SérgioThis dissertation explores the concept of socially sustainable and responsible airport expansion through a case study of Vienna International Airport’s planned third runway. The dissertation develops a master plan grounded in international standards, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards (PS), Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Guidelines, and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recommendations, combined with best practices from the aviation industry. A gap analysis evaluates the alignment of Vienna Airport’s social management measures with this master plan to identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for improvement. The gap analysis reveals that Vienna Airport has implemented numerous measures exceeding legal requirements, such as proactive community engagement through the Dialog Forum (DF), comprehensive noise protection programs, and transparent grievance mechanisms. These initiatives position Vienna Airport as a potential best-practice model for socially responsible airport expansions. However, some gaps remain in areas such as resettlement planning, long-term health impact mitigation, and modern communication strategies like social media engagement. Recommendations for Vienna Airport also include enhancing transparency, developing a Community Health Action Plan, and strengthening resettlement and integration programs. This thesis concludes that Vienna Airport’s approach can serve as an excellent foundation for best practices in socially sustainable airport expansions, particularly with the integration of the proposed recommendations to further align its measures with global standards of social responsibility. While the master plan provides a robust framework for addressing social impacts, its applicability may be limited in regions with less stringent social commitments, highlighting the challenges of global standardization.
- Combining space syntax with machine learning to predict seating places: the case of Gulbenkian estate in PortugalPublication . Fernandes, Pedro AfonsoA recent trend in space syntax is the application of machine learning (ML) techniques to extend the analyses traditionally performed with methods from graph theory. The goal of this paper is to explore the relationship between visual syntactic measures and the location of seating places in a grid with the resort of ML methods. As far as a public housing estate (Bairro Gulbenkian) located in Odivelas, near Lisbon, Portugal, is concerned, we found that the location of benches can be predicted accurately from visual connectivity, clustering, control, controllability, integration and through vision using partial least squares or random forests. In fact, these two methods provide a better balance between sensitivity (the proportion of seating places classified as such) and specificity (the proportion of other places classified as such) than logistic regression, least absolute shrinkage operator (LASSO), decision trees, support vector machines and neural networks. In addition, we found that visual clustering, integration, control and through vision may be the key measures to predict seating places.
- A managerial perspective on generative AI’s role in digital twin- enabled positive energy districtsPublication . Schmidt, Vanessa; Bohnsack, RenéAs cities worldwide strive toward more sustainable energy systems, Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) have emerged as a promising approach to achieving net-positive annual energy balances. However, the complexity and variability of urban energy supply and demand pose significant challenges for effective energy management. This thesis investigates how the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) with Digital Twin (DT) technologies can enhance PEDs. Based on a comprehensive literature review, project proposals, and qualitative interviews with industry experts, the research explores how GenAI can strengthen DT capabilities by improving forecasting accuracy, scenario testing and resource allocation. Key findings show that GenAI can fill data gaps, support adaptive modelling and facilitate proactive energy distribution decisions. In addition, the research identifies organisational and regulatory barriers - such as privacy, interoperability standards and the need for capacity building - that must be overcome to realise these benefits. By providing actionable insights into how GenAI can augment DTs, this work contributes to the theoretical and practical knowledge of sustainable urban energy systems. It highlights the importance of strategic planning, stakeholder collaboration and robust governance mechanisms to guide managers and policy makers towards more efficient, equitable and forward-looking energy solutions in DTs.
- Marketing nostalgia : engaging consumers through emotional memories. A study of Super Bowl advertising’s impact on consumer behaviorPublication . Vachon, Coline Marie Muriel; Fernandes, DanielThis dissertation examines the role of nostalgia marketing in engaging consumers through emotional memories, focusing on Super Bowl advertisements. Nostalgia, a bridge between past and present, resonates deeply with consumers by evoking cherished memories. The study investigates how nostalgic advertising influences emotional engagement, brand loyalty, and purchase intentions. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected via an online survey of American residents, assessing nostalgic tendencies, emotional responses, and perceptions of Super Bowl commercials. Statistical analyses revealed that nostalgic advertising significantly boosts emotional engagement, especially during culturally relevant events like the Super Bowl. While demographic factors had minimal direct impact, the perceived importance of Super Bowl commercials enhanced the nostalgic effect. The findings emphasize nostalgia’s strategic role in fostering brand loyalty and consumer connection. Marketers can utilize nostalgic elements such as music, visuals, and storytelling to create impactful campaigns. This research contributes to the academic understanding of nostalgia marketing and highlights its potential in diverse cultural and event contexts.
- A new era for football : the disruptive influence of small-sided leagues in GermanyPublication . Hoppe, Till; Rajsingh, PeterThis dissertation explores the disruptive influence of small-sided leagues (SSL) such as the Baller League (BL) and Icon League (IL) within traditional football in Germany. As these leagues gained traction in 2024 among young demographics with innovative game formats and interactive live streaming, they offer new dynamics to Germany9s highly competitive football market. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative data from 14 expert interviews with quantitative survey insights of a sample of 223 respondents, and review of the literature. Findings reveal that while SSL disrupt certain aspects of traditional football, their overall impact is complementary rather than directly competitive to traditional football in Germany. Both, the BL and IL leverage innovative formats, digital engagement, and niche market strategies to attract younger audiences and modernize fan engagement, however, limitations such as a lack of cultural depth, history, and lasting fan loyalty prevent them from disrupting the dominance of professional football leagues in Germany. This study supports the potential for SSL to coexist with traditional football, offering new opportunities for innovation and engagement while respecting the long-standing legacy of German football. The insights offer valuable perspectives for football, media and sponsorship stakeholders seeking to adapt with changing consumer preferences.

The results obtained demonstrate that storytelling can influence the promotion of gender equality, proving to be an effective tool in challenging existing gender stereotypes and having a quite positive impact on retaining fans in women's football. This powerful tool does indeed change perceptions through narratives that can be of various types. According to the respondents and interviewees, personal stories, documentaries, and social media and advertising campaigns have proven to be the most influential elements.
- Using gamification at cultural heritage sites to enhance visitor experiencePublication . Wever, Julie Nicole B. De; Borges, MónicaThis study aims to develop an understanding of how gamification can be used to enhance visitor experience at cultural heritage sites. As technology evolves rapidly, Gamification, a concept first defined in terms of marketing in 2011, has emerged as an innovative tool to establish enhanced experiences by creating more engaging and interactive activities and exhibitions for visitors. While gamification is widely studied in various applications in marketing and sales, its role in cultural heritage tourism remains underexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a quantitative study through an online questionnaire targeted at individuals who visit or have visited cultural heritage sites. The purpose of the study was to understand which factors contribute to the adoption of gamification and its impact on visitor experience at a cultural heritage site. We draw on the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) frameworks to analyze the adoption criteria of gamification and its subsequent effects. The findings of our study indicated that these models provide good predictive power for the willingness to adopt gamification. Specifically, our results showed that the digital savviness of an individual plays a significant role in the adoption intention. Moreover, the results demonstrate that gamification plays a mediating role in enhancing the visitor experience through factors such as perceived ease of use and entertainment gratification. These findings underscore the potential of gamification to transform cultural heritage tourism by fostering deeper engagement and satisfaction among visitors, offering valuable insights for managers and other stakeholders in the tourism industry.
